Short answer: Our Ciello sofa comes in two sizes, Regular and XL, and each size has two back and arm styles, Original and High Angled. Regular has a seat 31 inches (79 cm) wide and 21.7 inches (55 cm) deep, and XL has a seat 33.75 inches (86 cm) wide and 26.4 inches (67 cm) deep. Both sit 21.3 inches (54 cm) from the floor. You can add a 54.5-inch (139 cm) deep chaise and a storage ottoman that holds 75 litres (2.65 cubic feet).
Ciello is one of our softest modular sofas, so the size and the back style change how it feels. The sections below give the exact measurements so you can pick the version that fits your body and your room.

What is Ciello and how is it built?
Ciello is a modular sofa made of seat modules, corner modules, chaise extensions and storage ottomans that connect without tools. You can start with a one-seater or a two-seater and add to it later, up to a seven-seater with two corners.
The comfort comes from the cushions. Each seat and back cushion uses synthetic fibre (no feathers) around a supportive D35 high-density foam core, and the seat base has an extra 1.5-inch (4 cm) layer of foam on top. The frame is plywood, with steel springs and elastic webbing in the seat base. The legs are plastic with a metal screw and are 1 inch (3 cm) high.
Each seat supports up to 159 kg. Because the cushions are loose, plan to fluff and rotate them every week or two to keep their loft. Our guide to how many modules you need helps you decide how many seats to start with.
Regular vs XL: which size is right for you?
Both sizes share the same look, the same seat height and the same cushion construction. XL gives you a wider and deeper seat, which suits curling up or sitting cross-legged. Regular has a smaller footprint for a tighter room.
Regular vs XL: which size is right for you?
| Measurement | Ciello Regular | Ciello XL |
|---|---|---|
| Seat width | 31 inches (79 cm) | 33.75 inches (86 cm) |
| Seat depth | 21.7 inches (55 cm) | 26.4 inches (67 cm) |
| Seat height | 21.3 inches (54 cm) | 21.3 inches (54 cm) |
| Overall depth of a seat module, back included | 37.4 inches (95 cm) | 40.2 inches (102 cm) |
| Chaise depth | 54.5 inches (139 cm) | 54.5 inches (139 cm) |
| Chaise module, overall | 68.5 x 37.4 inches (174 x 95 cm) | 68.5 x 40.2 inches (174 x 102 cm) |
Seat depth is measured from the front of the seat cushion to the front of the back cushion, so it changes a little with how the back cushion tilts. Our sofa seat depth and height guide compares these numbers with our other sofas.
Choose Regular if you want a more compact footprint. Choose XL if you want to stretch out or sit with your legs up, and you have the room.
Original vs High Angled: back and arm styles
Ciello has two back and arm styles. The High Angled version is more reclined, as the table shows. The Original version has a lower, more classic profile.
Original vs High Angled: back and arm styles
| Style | Backrest height | Arm height |
|---|---|---|
| Original, Regular | 33 inches (84 cm) | 25.2 inches (64 cm) |
| Original, XL | 34.3 inches (87 cm) | 26.5 inches (67 cm) |
| High Angled, Regular and XL | 37 inches (94 cm) | 28.5 inches (73 cm) |
Heights are measured from the floor, with the legs, to the top of the back or arm cushion. On Regular, High Angled adds about 4 inches (10 cm) to the Original back height, and on XL it adds about 2.75 inches (7 cm). The back and arm cushions are separate, so they are also easy to fluff and reshape.
You can also use armless modules in the middle of a longer sofa or sectional. Choose Original if you want a lower silhouette. Choose High Angled if you like to lean back.
Chaise and plateau options
A chaise extension adds a long seat at one end of your Ciello sofa for stretching out. The chaise is 54.5 inches (139 cm) deep, from the front of the chaise cushion to the front of the back cushion, and the module is 68.5 inches (174 cm) long overall in both sizes.
- Chaise left or right: put the chaise on either end of the sofa. You can also choose a double chaise, one at each end.
- Plateau: a plateau is built from the same extension piece as the chaise. You can add it on the left, on the right or on both sides, to extend the seating area.
- Corner modules: these let you build an L-shaped or U-shaped sectional, from a three-seater with a corner up to a seven-seater with two corners.
The chaise cushion is vacuum sealed for shipping, so it can take up to two weeks to fully expand after delivery. Our sofa configuration guide shows how these layouts work in different rooms.
Storage ottoman
The Ciello storage ottoman works as a footrest, an extra seat and a place to put blankets or clutter. It has 75 litres (2.65 cubic feet) of storage under the lid in both sizes. The Regular ottoman measures 31.1 inches (79 cm) square and 21.3 inches (54 cm) high, and the XL ottoman measures 35.0 inches (89 cm) square and 21.3 inches (54.2 cm) high.
The ottoman is the same height as the sofa seat. Our guide to storage ottomans that double as seating compares the options across our range.
Fabrics and covers
Our Ciello fabrics are all 100% polyester with zip-off covers that are machine washable. The seat, back and arm cushion covers zip off, and the base cover is held under the seat base with Velcro. Wash cold on a gentle cycle and air dry, and avoid bleach and high heat. On the Aquaforte and Aquaforte Velvet fabrics, you can wipe spills promptly with a damp cloth first.
Abrasion resistance is measured in Martindale double rubs, and a higher number means a more durable surface.
Fabrics and covers

Who Ciello suits, and who it does not
Ciello suits you if you want a deep, soft seat that you can sink into, curl up on or lounge across. It also suits you if you want a sofa that can grow, because you can add seats, a chaise or an ottoman later and rearrange them as your space changes.
It may not be the right sofa if you prefer a firm, upright seat. The cushions are soft and loose, and they soften gradually with use, so they need regular fluffing. If you want a more upright back, look at our Gaia sofa, which shares the same cushion construction but has a more upright backrest. Our Ciello vs Gaia comparison sets the two side by side, and our Atmosphere vs Ciello comparison shows how Ciello differs from our firmer, storage-focused Atmosphere sofa.
Our recommendation
- Small room or an apartment: Ciello Regular with Original back and arms.
- Lounging, curling up or a larger living room: Ciello XL.
- Leaning back and a more supportive arm: the High Angled style, in either size.
- Stretching out: add a chaise, or two for a larger sectional.
- Footrest and storage: add the storage ottoman.
- Homes with pets or kids: Aquaforte Velvet or Performance Chenille, with the removable covers.
