A complete guide to our Vela lounge chair: its dimensions, the fabrics and colors we offer, the Oak and Walnut finishes, and how the covers and care work.

A Cozey Vela lounge chair

Short answer: Our Vela lounge chair measures 22.9 inches wide, 30.5 inches deep and 27.3 inches high, with a seat height of 16.3 inches. It comes in an Oak or Walnut finish on solid ash legs, with fabric options in Performance Fabric, Bouclé, Performance Chenille and Textured Weave. The covers are not removable, so choose a fabric you are happy to live with and spot clean it.

Vela is a compact chair with a low profile, so it tends to suit small living rooms, bedrooms and reading corners. Because the covers do not come off, the fabric and wood choices matter more than they do on some of our other chairs. This guide sets out the sizes and materials in one place so you can decide with real numbers. The Vela dining chair is a different product from the Vela lounge chair covered in this guide.

How big is the Vela lounge chair?

Vela is the most compact of our five accent chairs. These are the dimensions of the assembled chair:

  • Overall size: 22.9 inches wide, 30.5 inches deep and 27.3 inches high.
  • Seat height: 16.3 inches from the floor to the top of the seat.
  • Seat depth: 21.9 inches.

The chair ships in two boxes. The frame box measures 24.6 x 23.5 x 11.2 inches and weighs 27.2 lb. The cushion box measures 23.8 x 22.7 x 7.8 inches and weighs 17.3 lb. Those box sizes help if you are planning a route through a narrow stairwell or hallway. For more on that, see our guide to measuring stairs, elevators and doorways.

The table below compares Vela with our other four accent chairs, so you can see where it sits in the range.

Vela is the narrowest and the lowest of the five. Hubbel has a lower seat, at 15.7 inches. For a wider comparison, read our guide on how to choose an accent chair.

Which fabrics and colors does the Vela lounge chair come in?

The Vela lounge chair comes in four fabric families and five colors. All of the fabrics are 100% polyester. We measure abrasion resistance with the Martindale scale, where a higher number means a more abrasion-resistant fabric.

Which fabrics and colors does the Vela lounge chair come in?

FabricColorsMartindale count
Performance FabricLeaf, Fog48,000
BoucléCloud15,000
Performance ChenilleSage48,000
Textured WeaveWhite Sand54,000

Textured Weave has the highest count of the four at 54,000, Performance Fabric and Performance Chenille follow at 48,000, and Bouclé has the lowest at 15,000. Bouclé may suit a chair that gets lighter use, and we advise spot cleaning it to maintain its look. Our Atmosphere sofa also comes in Cloud bouclé.

Fabric colors on a screen can look different from the real thing, so judge them in your own light. Our guide to choosing a sofa color has tips that apply to a chair too, and our guide to sofa fabric types explains how the fabric families differ.

What is the Vela lounge chair made of, and which wood finishes are there?

You can choose an Oak or Walnut finish for the Vela lounge chair. The legs are solid ash, stained and finished in satin. The seat shell and back shell are made of 0.39-inch ash veneer laminated plywood, which means a thin layer of real ash wood over plywood. The seat and back cushions are filled with polyester fiber over foam, and the fabric is OEKO-TEX certified. Our product page lists the ash wood as scratch resistant.

The finish you choose does two jobs. It sets the look of the chair on its own, and it can tie the chair to other wood in the room. We offer Oak and Walnut on several pieces, including our Mensa tables, so a chair and a side table can share a finish. For ideas on pairing, see our guide to matching a sofa, accent chair and coffee table.

Are the Vela lounge chair covers removable, and how do you care for the chair?

No. The covers on the Vela lounge chair are not removable, and because they do not come off, they cannot be machine washed. The covers on our Hubbel, Mira and Cassini lounge chair are removable if that matters to you, and the Naos covers, like Vela, are not.

Care is simple and mostly about quick action:

  • Vacuum regularly. Use an upholstery attachment to remove dust, debris and pet hair.
  • Blot spills straight away. Use minimal water and a mild, non-abrasive cleaner. Professional cleaning is recommended for stains that persist.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals. Test any cleaner in a hidden area first.
  • Smooth the cushions by hand. The seat and back cushions on Vela cannot be fluffed the way sofa cushions can, so press and smooth them back into shape.

Fabric choice affects how a chair wears. Our guides on cleaning your sofa by fabric type and on performance fabric cover the details, and our guide to the most durable sofa fabrics for pets is useful if a pet will share the chair. Our product page lists the Vela lounge chair as pet friendly, which is our own assessment.

Who is the Vela lounge chair for, and who is it not for?

The Vela lounge chair suits a few situations well:

  • Small rooms and corners. At 22.9 inches wide, it is our narrowest chair.
  • Bedrooms and reading nooks. The seat is 16.3 inches high and 21.9 inches deep, which suits sitting upright with a book.
  • Spaces where a low profile helps. At 27.3 inches high, it keeps sight lines open.

It may not be the best fit if you want covers you can take off, because the covers are fixed. In that case look at our Hubbel, Mira or Cassini lounge chair. If you want a high back, Mira reaches 33.1 inches. If you want the widest, most enveloping seat, the Cassini lounge chair is 37.0 inches wide.

How does the Vela lounge chair work with our sofas?

We suggest pairing Vela with our Atmosphere and Neptune sofas. Cloud bouclé on Vela matches the Cloud bouclé on Atmosphere, which makes a tonal pair. A contrasting color can also work, and the wood finish gives you something to repeat elsewhere in the room. See our living room seating for the full range of sofas, chairs and ottomans.

Our recommendation

  • Small living room, bedroom or reading corner: the Vela lounge chair, in Oak or Walnut.
  • Everyday use with a pet or children: Performance Fabric or Performance Chenille, at 48,000 Martindale, or Textured Weave at 54,000.
  • A soft, textured look for lighter use: Cloud bouclé at 15,000 Martindale, with spot cleaning.
  • Removable covers: choose Hubbel, Mira or the Cassini lounge chair instead.
  • A match with an Atmosphere sofa: Cloud bouclé, since the fabric is shared.

Frequently Asked Questions

The assembled Vela lounge chair measures 22.9 inches wide, 30.5 inches deep and 27.3 inches high. The seat height is 16.3 inches and the seat depth is 21.9 inches. That makes it the narrowest and the lowest of our five accent chairs. It ships in two boxes, one for the frame and one for the cushions. Mark the footprint on your floor with painter's tape before you order, and compare the 16.3 inch seat height with your sofa and coffee table.

We offer four fabric families on Vela. Performance Fabric comes in Leaf and Fog, Bouclé comes in Cloud, Performance Chenille comes in Sage, and Textured Weave comes in White Sand. All of them are 100% polyester. Their Martindale abrasion counts are 48,000 for Performance Fabric, 15,000 for Bouclé, 48,000 for Performance Chenille and 54,000 for Textured Weave. Colors on screen can differ from the real fabric, so check the product page for the current range and view the color in your own room light if you can.

The Vela lounge chair comes in Oak or Walnut. Both finishes are applied to solid ash legs, which are stained and given a satin finish. The seat shell and back shell use a 0.39-inch ash veneer over laminated plywood. Choose Oak for a lighter, more natural look and Walnut for a deeper tone. Our product page lists the ash wood as scratch resistant. You can pick the wood to match a table, shelf or floor you already own.

No, the covers on the Vela lounge chair are not removable. Our product page lists removable covers as no. Because the covers do not come off, they cannot be machine washed, so we recommend regular vacuuming and blotting spills straight away with minimal water and a mild, non-abrasive cleaner. If removable covers are important to you, our Hubbel, Mira and Cassini lounge chair have them. The Naos chair, like Vela, does not.

Yes, it is one of the better choices in our range for a small space. The chair is 22.9 inches wide and 30.5 inches deep, which is the smallest footprint of our five accent chairs, and its 27.3 inch height keeps the room feeling open. As general advice rather than a product specification, leave about 30 to 36 inches for a walkway beside any chair. Measure your corner and the walkway before you decide.

Vacuum the chair regularly with an upholstery attachment to lift dust, debris and pet hair. If something spills, blot it straight away with minimal water and a mild, non-abrasive cleaner, and test the cleaner in a hidden spot first. Avoid harsh chemicals. We recommend professional cleaning for stains that do not lift. The seat and back cushions cannot be fluffed like sofa cushions, so press and smooth them into shape. Because the covers are not removable, we do not recommend machine washing any part of the chair.

Our product page lists the Vela lounge chair as pet friendly, which is our own assessment. The ash wood is listed as scratch resistant. For fabric, Performance Fabric and Performance Chenille are both 48,000 on the Martindale scale and Textured Weave is 54,000, while Bouclé is 15,000, the lowest of the four. Vacuum pet hair regularly with an upholstery attachment, and blot accidents straight away. Since the covers cannot be removed, choose the fabric with that in mind.
