Short answer: Our Naos lounge chair measures 31.9 inches wide, 31.7 inches deep and 30.1 inches high, with a seat that is 22 inches deep and 17 inches high. It is built from ash wood and dual-layer foam, in a mid-century shape. It suits a living room, home office or bedroom corner where you have about 32 by 32 inches of floor, and it is less suited to a very narrow nook or to anyone who wants removable covers.
A photo does not tell you how deep a chair's seat is or how much floor it takes. This guide gives the exact numbers, describes what the seat is like, and says plainly who the chair is for and who should look at another one.

How big is the Naos lounge chair?
Naos is a square-ish chair: its width and depth are almost the same, and its back sits at a moderate height. All figures below are for the assembled chair.
How big is the Naos lounge chair?
| Measurement | Inches |
|---|---|
| Width | 31.9 inches |
| Depth | 31.7 inches |
| Height | 30.1 inches |
| Seat height | 17 inches |
| Seat depth | 22 inches |
Naos ships in one box measuring 32.3 x 25.6 x 21.7 inches and weighing 49.4 lbs. That is useful to know if you have a tight stairwell or entry. Our guide to measuring stairs, elevators and doorways shows how to check the route before delivery.
What is it like to sit in?
The seat is 22 inches deep and 17 inches high. We designed it for a relaxed, supported posture. The backrest and the seat each use dual-layer foam over a 0.5 inch plywood base, and the wood armrests give you a firm place to rest your arms.
Two things are worth knowing before you order:
- The foam is firm at first. It is a high-performance, durable foam, and it may need a short break-in period before it reaches its best comfort. The cushions cannot be fluffed the way our sofa cushions can. You press and smooth them by hand instead, and they should need little upkeep.
- The seat height is mid-range. At 17 inches, the seat sits between our lowest chair, Hubbel, and our highest, Mira. Our guide to how to choose an accent chair compares all five of our lounge chairs side by side.
If you like to curl up with your feet on the seat, a deeper chair may suit you better. If you like to sit upright for reading, working or conversation, the depth and the firm foam are a good match.
What is the Naos chair made of?
Naos has a solid ash wood frame for the armrests and legs, finished in a satin Oak or Walnut stain. The seat and the back are built on 0.5 inch plywood, topped with dual-layer foam and a layer of fiber padding, and then covered in 100% polyester fabric. The fabrics are OEKO-TEX certified. The hardware in the box includes screws, wood plugs and an Allen key, four felt floor protectors are included for the legs, and our product page describes assembly as tool-free.
Each fabric comes with a set wood finish, so you choose a color combination rather than mixing and matching. On our site you can choose from:
What is the Naos chair made of?
| Color and frame | Fabric | Martindale rub count |
|---|---|---|
| Moss Green and Oak | Performance Fabric | 48,000 |
| Fog and Oak | Performance Fabric | 48,000 |
| Slate and Walnut | Performance Fabric | 48,000 |
| Parchment and Oak | Performance Textured Weave | 54,000 |
| Mocha and Walnut | Performance Fabric | 48,000 |
| Crumble and Oak | Aquaforte Velvet | more than 200,000 |
| Aqua and Oak | Aquaforte Velvet | more than 200,000 |
| Chocolate and Walnut | Aquaforte Velvet | more than 200,000 |
The Martindale test measures abrasion resistance, and a higher count means a fabric that resists wear for longer. For a closer look at how these fabrics differ, read our guides to performance fabric and to sofa fabric types. You can also order free swatches from the product page before you decide. If you are trying to match a color to the rest of the room, our guide to choosing a sofa color applies to chairs too.
Does the Naos chair fit in a small room?
It fits a small room if you can spare roughly 32 inches square of floor, plus walking room. Naos is wider than our Vela lounge chair, which is 22.9 inches wide, and than our Hubbel, which is 27.0 inches wide. Its depth of 31.7 inches is close to theirs, at 30.5 inches for Vela and 32.7 inches for Hubbel.
Its overall height is 30.1 inches, so the back stays moderate rather than towering over the room.
Some general advice, not a product specification: leave about 30 to 36 inches for a walkway beside the chair, and mark the footprint on the floor with painter's tape for a day before you order. How do you care for the Naos chair?
The covers on Naos are not removable, so care is about vacuuming and spot cleaning rather than washing. Our care steps are:
- Vacuum regularly with an upholstery attachment to remove dust, debris and pet hair.
- Blot spills right away with minimal water and a mild, non-abrasive cleaner. Do not rub. We recommend professional cleaning for persistent stains.
- Spot test first in a hidden area before you use any cleaner, and avoid harsh chemicals.
- Dust the wood with a soft, dry cloth. For marks on the frame, wipe gently with a damp cloth and mild soap, then dry it right away.
Because the covers stay on, we suggest choosing the fabric with your household in mind. In our own assessment, Performance Fabric is moderately suited to homes with pets, and Aquaforte Velvet is the most abrasion-resistant option we offer for this chair. Our guide to cleaning a sofa by fabric type has more detail on each fabric. Naos is covered by our 5-year limited warranty.
Who is the Naos chair for, and who should look elsewhere?
Naos suits you if:
- You want a mid-century look with real wood arms and legs.
- You want an upright, supportive seat for reading, working or conversation.
- You have a living room, home office or bedroom corner with about 32 inches of width.
- You prefer to keep a chair simple, with spot cleaning rather than washing.
Look at another chair if:
- You need removable covers. Our Hubbel, Mira and Cassini lounge chairs have removable covers.
- You want a very narrow chair. Vela is our narrowest.
- You want a swivel. Only our Cassini lounge chair offers one.
What does Naos go with?
We suggest pairing Naos with our Atmosphere and Ciello sofas, or with the Altitude storage cabinet in a larger room. It also pairs well with our Mensa tables: the Mensa side table is a natural neighbor at the arm of the chair, and our Mensa credenza suits a wall behind it. For help choosing a table height, our guide to choosing a side table explains how to match it to the arm and seat, and our guide to neutral color palettes can help you pick a fabric that works with the wood.
Our recommendation
- Choose Naos if you want an upright, supportive chair with a mid-century shape, and you are happy with spot cleaning.
- Choose Naos in Aquaforte Velvet if you want the most abrasion-resistant covering we offer on this chair.
- Choose Vela if your corner is narrower than 32 inches, or Hubbel if you want a shallower seat.
- Choose Hubbel, Mira or the Cassini lounge chair if removable covers matter most.
- Order swatches first if you are unsure about color, since the fabric and wood are sold as fixed combinations.
