How to Choose an Accent Chair for a Small Living Room

A practical comparison of our five accent chairs by size, seat height, comfort, materials and care, so you can pick one for a living room or bedroom corner.

A Cozey Naos lounge chair in a living room

Short answer: Start with the footprint. Our Vela lounge chair is the smallest of the five, at 22.9 inches wide and 30.5 inches deep, and our Hubbel has the shallowest seat, at 18.9 inches. Choose Naos for a mid-century look, Mira for a high back and sling seat, and the Cassini lounge chair for a curved shape with a swivel or stationary base.

An accent chair is usually the one piece you add after the sofa is settled, so a few inches either way decides whether it fits the corner or crowds the room. This guide uses our published measurements so you can plan with real numbers.

How do you size an accent chair to your room?

Four measurements matter most. Compare them against your corner before you look at fabrics.

  • Width and depth. These set the footprint. Our five chairs range from 22.9 inches to 37.0 inches wide, and from 30.5 inches to 33.5 inches deep.
  • Seat height. This ranges from 15.7 inches on Hubbel to 19.1 inches on Mira. A lower seat feels more relaxed, and a higher seat is often easier to get out of.
  • Seat depth. Our Cassini lounge chair has the deepest seat at 22.6 inches, and Hubbel has the shallowest at 18.9 inches. A shallower seat saves floor space, and a deeper seat suits curling up.
  • Overall height. The lowest chair is Vela at 27.3 inches, and the tallest back is Mira at 33.1 inches. In a small room, a lower back keeps sight lines open.

General advice, not a product specification: leave about 30 to 36 inches for a walkway, and about 18 inches between the chair and a coffee table. Mark the footprint on the floor with painter's tape and live with it for a day. If you would like a second opinion, you can book a free design consultation.

How do our five accent chairs compare?

All measurements are overall dimensions of the assembled chair.

Which accent chair suits which space?

Vela lounge chair

Vela has the smallest footprint and the lowest profile of the five. It has a mid-century Scandinavian design with solid ash legs and a molded plywood seat and back shell with an ash veneer, topped with seat and back cushions. You can choose an Oak or Walnut finish, and the cushion covers are interchangeable, so you can change the look later. It suits a narrow corner, a reading nook or a small bedroom. See the Vela lounge chair.

Hubbel lounge chair

Hubbel has the shallowest seat depth of the five, at 18.9 inches, and the lowest seat at 15.7 inches. It is built like a sofa, with webbing and springs, and has two planar legs in solid ash, finished in Oak or Walnut. The covers are removable and washable. It suits tight spots where a deeper chair would stick out. See the Hubbel lounge chair.

Mira

Mira is the tallest of the five. It pairs a black powder-coated steel frame with stained solid ash armrests in a walnut color, and its seat is a sling that attaches to the frame with zippers, with two cushion inserts on top. It has a high back, a wide seat and the highest seat of the five, at 19.1 inches. It suits a living room with space for a statement chair, or a corner where you plan to sit for a long time. See Mira.

Naos

Naos has a mid-century design in ash wood, with armrests and legs in an Oak or Walnut finish. The seat and back use dual-layer foam. It measures 31.9 inches wide and 31.7 inches deep, so it needs more room than Vela or Hubbel, but its seat is deeper. We position it for a living room, home office or bedroom. See Naos.

Cassini lounge chair

The Cassini lounge chair is the widest of the five at 37.0 inches, with curved arms and the same sculptural silhouette as our Cassini sofa. It comes with a swivel or a stationary base, and its covers are removable and washable. It has the deepest seat at 22.6 inches. It suits a living room corner where you want a generous, enveloping seat. See the Cassini lounge chair.

All of our accent chair fabrics are 100% polyester and OEKO-TEX certified. Fabric colors vary by chair, so check the product page for the current range.

For comfort, the foam and structure differ by chair. Naos uses dual-layer foam in the seat and back, and its high-density foam may need a short break-in period to reach its best comfort. Hubbel has a layered foam seat and back on a sofa-style base. Mira's seat is a sling with cushion inserts on top. Vela has cushions over a molded shell. The best test is how you sit: if you like to perch, look at Vela or Hubbel, and if you like to sink in, look at the Cassini lounge chair or Mira.

How do you care for an accent chair?

Our product pages list removable, washable covers on Hubbel, Mira and the Cassini lounge chair. Vela's cushion covers are interchangeable. The covers on Naos are not removable.

Fabric choice affects how a chair wears. We measure abrasion with the Martindale scale. Bouclé is 15,000, Performance Fabric and Performance Chenille are 48,000, Textured Weave is 54,000, Aquaforte Original is 78,000, and Aquaforte Velvet is over 200,000. A higher number means a more abrasion-resistant fabric. For more detail, read our guides to sofa fabric types, performance fabric and cleaning by fabric type.

How does an accent chair fit with sofas and tables?

Our Cassini lounge chair shares its curved arms with the Cassini sofa, so the two work as a set. We pair Vela with Atmosphere and Neptune, and Naos with Mensa tables, such as the Mensa side table. Pick a chair whose wood tone or fabric color repeats something already in the room, rather than matching exactly. For the wider room, see our living room furniture guide, and for a bedroom corner see our bedroom furniture guide.

Our recommendation

  • Smallest corner or narrow wall: Vela. It is our narrowest and lowest chair.
  • Shallow space where you still want a supportive seat: Hubbel. It has our shallowest seat and a sofa-style build.
  • A statement chair with a high back: Mira. It has a sling seat, a steel frame and the tallest back.
  • A mid-century look in living room, office or bedroom: Naos.
  • The most generous, curved seat, with the option to swivel: the Cassini lounge chair, if you have the 37.0 inches of width.

Frequently Asked Questions

Vela has the smallest footprint of our five accent chairs, at 22.9 inches wide and 30.5 inches deep, and it is also the lowest at 27.3 inches high. Hubbel is the next most compact option if you want a shallower seat: its seat is 18.9 inches deep. Measure the corner first, then compare it against the width and depth columns in the table above. A chair that fits on paper but blocks a walkway will feel larger than its numbers.

As general advice, not a product specification, leave about 30 to 36 inches for walkways and about 18 inches between the chair and a coffee table. Add the chair's own width and depth to those clearances, using our published dimensions, and mark the total footprint on the floor with painter's tape. If the chair swivels, as the Cassini lounge chair can, leave a little extra room so you can turn comfortably.

Hubbel has the lowest seat at 15.7 inches, followed by Vela at 16.3 inches and the Cassini lounge chair at 16.5 inches. Naos sits at 17.1 inches, and Mira has the highest seat at 19.1 inches. If you or a family member find low seats hard to get out of, Mira is the higher option. If you like a relaxed, low posture, Hubbel is the lowest. Sit on a chair at a similar height before you buy if you can, since a few inches changes how it feels.

The Cassini lounge chair is the one in this group that comes with a swivel option. You choose a swivel or stationary base on the product page, and the swivel mechanism fixes to the underside of the chair. Vela, Hubbel, Mira and Naos do not list a swivel on their product pages. If you want to turn toward a window or a conversation without moving the chair, choose the swivel version of the Cassini lounge chair.

Our product pages list removable, washable covers for Hubbel, Mira and the Cassini lounge chair. Vela has interchangeable cushion covers, so you can swap the look later. The covers on Naos are not removable, so choose its fabric with that in mind. Removable covers matter most for a chair you use every day, since you can take the cover off when it needs cleaning. For any chair, follow the care label for the fabric you choose, because fabrics differ in how they should be cleaned.

Yes, if it fits. For Naos, we suggest use in a living room, home office or bedroom. For the others, compare the footprint to your bedroom corner, and allow walking room beside the bed. Vela and Hubbel are the most compact, at 22.9 inches and 27.0 inches wide. Check that the chair does not block a drawer, a closet door or the path to the bed. Our guide to bedroom furniture has more on planning the layout.

By Martindale abrasion count, Aquaforte Velvet is the highest at over 200,000, followed by Aquaforte Original at 78,000, Textured Weave at 54,000, and Performance Fabric and Performance Chenille at 48,000. Bouclé is 15,000. Aquaforte Velvet is offered on Hubbel, Mira, Naos and the Cassini lounge chair. Abrasion count is only one part of the choice, since color, texture and feel matter too, and the fabrics offered vary by chair. Check the product page for the current options, and order free swatches where the page offers them, before you decide.
