Short answer: In a studio, choose by the measurement that is tightest: the length of your wall or the depth of your floor. Our Orian two-seater is the narrowest at 72.8 inches wide and makes a queen bed of 62 x 80 inches, but it opens 80 inches into the room. Our Neptune three-seater is wider at 89.8 inches and sleeps across its own width, so it opens only about 60 inches into the room. Our Atmosphere Sleeper three-seater opens 68.1 inches from the back of the sofa with round arms, and the two-seater with sleeper ottoman reaches about 98 inches.
In a studio the sofa is your seating, your guest bed and often the divider between living and sleeping zones. A sleeper that looks small in its closed photo can still block the room once it is open, so this guide compares both footprints and shows where bedding and guests fit.

What does a studio need from a sofa bed?
A studio sofa bed has three jobs. It has to be comfortable to sit on every day, it has to open into a bed without taking over the room, and it helps if it gives you somewhere to keep bedding. Everything else is secondary.
A sofa bed has two footprints, and both matter:
- Closed footprint: the width and depth of the sofa as seating, including the arms.
- Open footprint: how far the bed reaches from the back of the sofa into the room, which decides whether your bed, desk or doorway stays usable.
Measure both against your floor plan before you choose. As general advice, not a product specification, keep at least 30 inches clear for walking paths, and 36 inches if you want them to feel more comfortable. Our guide to how much space a pull-out sofa bed needs walks through measuring a room in both modes.
How do our sofa beds compare in a studio?
These are the layouts most studios consider, with measurements from our product pages. Widths include the arms. Open depth is measured from the back of the sofa to the front edge of the open bed.
How do our sofa beds compare in a studio?
| Layout | Width closed | Depth closed | Depth with bed open |
|---|---|---|---|
| Neptune three-seater | 89.8 inches | 39.0 inches | About 60 inches |
| Orian two-seater | 72.8 inches | 40.9 inches | 80 inches |
| Atmosphere Sleeper three-seater, round arms | 106.7 inches | 38.6 inches | 68.1 inches |
| Atmosphere Sleeper two-seater with sleeper ottoman, round arms | 77.2 inches | 38.6 inches | About 98 inches |
Atmosphere also comes with square arms, which add width and depth: the three-seater is 110.6 inches wide and opens 70.1 inches, and the two-seater with ottoman is 81.1 inches wide and reaches slightly farther than the round-arm figure above. The two-seater Atmosphere figures are for the sofa alone, and the open depth includes the sleeper ottoman.
The sleeping surfaces differ too. Orian opens to about 62 x 80 inches, and Atmosphere Sleeper opens to about 88.6 x 59.1 inches in either layout. Neptune's three-seater is sold as a Full-size bed. Our sofa bed sizes guide explains how those sizes compare with standard mattresses and sheets.
Which sofa bed suits which studio?
Match the layout to the shape of the room rather than to the bed size you want.
- Narrow wall, room to open into: the Orian two-seater is the narrowest queen option, at 72.8 inches wide. It needs the most floor, so plan for 80 inches plus your walkway.
- Long wall, shallow floor: the Neptune three-seater sleeps across its own width, so it opens only about 60 inches into the room, the shortest reach of the layouts above. It needs the wall: 89.8 inches.
- Room for a deeper, softer sofa: the three-seater Atmosphere Sleeper opens 68.1 inches with round arms, a middle reach with a deeper seat. It is also the widest, at 106.7 inches.
- A single guest and a very small wall: an Orian single sleeper seat is 41.9 inches wide with arms, and opens to about 31 x 80 inches. A Neptune one-seater is 39.4 inches wide, and its Single version also uses an ottoman.
The smallest Atmosphere Sleeper layout on our site is a two-seater with an ottoman, which reaches the farthest of any layout above, at about 98 inches. Our Neptune, Orian and Atmosphere comparison covers feel in detail.
How do you lay out a studio around a sofa bed?
Plan the room for the open bed first, because the closed sofa is easy to fit anywhere. These are general tips, not product specifications.
- Tape the open footprint on the floor. Mark the open depth and the bed width, then check the door swing, the path to the bathroom and any closet doors.
- Give the coffee table somewhere to go. A light or movable table, or a storage ottoman, is easier to shift at night than a heavy one. A common guideline is 14 to 18 inches between sofa and coffee table, and the open bed will use that gap, so decide where the table goes first.
- Use the sofa as a divider. Placing the back of the sofa toward your own bed creates a visual break between the zones. Check that the open guest bed does not reach your bed, desk or entry.
- Open only what you need. Each sleeper seat opens on its own in Neptune and Orian, and Atmosphere Sleeper modules can open independently, so a single guest does not need the whole sofa open.

Where do you keep the bedding in a studio?
Closet space is tight in a studio, so check where the sheets and pillows go before you pick a sleeper.
- Neptune: each sleeper seat has a storage compartment of about 23.2 x 22.8 x 5.5 inches, and storage seats and a storage ottoman of 32 liters (1.13 cubic feet) add more space. Bedding can live inside the sofa.
- Orian: sleeper seats have no storage, and Orian seats have storage only if you choose the storage version (a storage seat, corner seat or ottoman). A storage seat holds about 90 liters (3.2 cubic feet), so you can add one beside your sleeper seats if you have the width.
- Atmosphere Sleeper: the sleeper modules do not include storage, and the regular, storage and sleeper seat types do not mix in one sofa. Plan to keep bedding elsewhere.
Our Neptune Sleep Kit is a mattress topper that adds cushioning for a guest. Our guide to sofa beds with storage shows where bedding fits in each layout.
Which one is most comfortable as your everyday sofa?
In a studio you sit on the sofa far more often than you sleep on it, so seat feel matters.
- Neptune: a firm seat that is 22.4 inches deep, which supports a more upright sit. Our Neptune guide has the details.
- Orian: a firm foam seat that is 25.5 inches deep, with soft, fiber-filled back cushions for a more relaxed lean. See our Orian guide.
- Atmosphere: medium-firm layered foam, with a seat depth of 27.3 inches for the square back or 29.5 inches for the round back. See our Atmosphere guide.
On covers, Neptune and Orian have removable, machine-washable seat and back cushion covers, with fixed arms and bases that do not come off for washing. Atmosphere covers are removable across the seats, backs and arms; check the care text for your fabric on the product page.
Will it get through a studio building's doors and stairs?
Our sofas arrive in separate boxes that you carry in and assemble, and assembly needs no tools. These are the longest and heaviest boxes for each sleeper, from the Dimensions section of each product page.
- Neptune: the longest box holds the arms, at 39.8 x 15.0 x 25.0 inches. The heaviest holds a sleeper seat, at 54.2 lb.
- Orian: the longest box holds the arms, at 41.5 x 12.5 x 22.5 inches. The heaviest holds a sleeper seat, at 51.5 lb.
- Atmosphere: the longest boxes are the arms, at 40.9 x 12.0 x 21.7 inches, and the corner backrests. Check the Dimensions section of the product page for the sleeper seat boxes.
Assembly takes 20 minutes per module for Neptune and Atmosphere. Our guide to measuring stairs, elevators and doorways shows how to check your route.
Our recommendation
- Narrow studio with floor to spare: the Orian two-seater, for the narrowest sofa and a queen-size bed.
- Long wall and little floor depth: the Neptune three-seater, which opens only about 60 inches and keeps bedding inside the sofa.
- Space for a deep, relaxed sofa: the Atmosphere Sleeper three-seater, keeping bedding in a separate piece of furniture.
- One occasional guest: an Orian or Neptune single, which keeps the closed footprint small.
Start with the wall length and floor depth, tape the open footprint, then pick the layout that leaves your walkway clear. Our sofa beds page shows each configuration.
