How to Remove Pet Hair From a Sofa, Fabric by Fabric

A practical guide to lifting pet hair off upholstery, with the right method for each of our fabrics and the colors that hide what is left.

A Cozey sofa in a living room

Short answer: The easiest way to remove pet hair is to work dry first: go over the sofa with a vacuum upholstery attachment or a lint roller, then follow with a slightly damp microfiber cloth for what remains. How easily hair comes off depends mostly on the fabric. Smooth, dense surfaces such as Aquaforte Velvet release hair most easily, while looped, ribbed and open weaves hold on to it.

Pet hair is the part of living with animals that no fabric avoids completely. The aim is a sofa where hair comes off in a few minutes instead of becoming a weekend job. Below, we explain why hair clings, which method suits each of our fabrics, and what to do when a vacuum is not enough.

What is the easiest way to remove pet hair from a sofa?

Start with the gentlest tool and move up only if you need to. This order protects the surface and gets most of the hair in the first pass.

  • Vacuum with the upholstery attachment. Use it across the seat, the back, the arms and the creases between cushions. Our care guidance for several fabrics recommends vacuuming regularly with an upholstery attachment to remove dust, debris and pet hair.
  • Lint roller or tape. A lint roller is a quick way to collect loose hair between vacuums. For looped fabrics, our care guidance names a lint roller as a good between-vacuum option.
  • Slightly damp microfiber cloth. Wring it out well so it is damp, not wet, and wipe in slow, even strokes. Do not scrub in circles.
  • Let the surface dry fully before anyone sits down.

Work in one direction and finish with a quick pass over the seams, where hair collects. For a spill rather than loose hair, read how to spot clean a sofa, and for everyday care by fabric, read how to clean your sofa.

Why does pet hair stick to some sofa fabrics more than others?

Three things decide how much hair a fabric holds: the surface, the weave and static.

Surface. A smooth, tightly built surface gives hair little to grip, so it lifts off easily. A looped, ribbed or nubby surface has pockets where fur settles.

Weave. An open weave can trap fur between fibers. A weave with a direction, such as regular Aquaforte, can catch and hold hair along the grain.

Static. Aquaforte Velvet has lower static than many fabrics, so hair clings less and is easier to lift off.

Color changes how visible hair is, but it does not change how hard it is to remove. We cover color further down. If you are still choosing a fabric, our guide to the most durable sofa fabric for pets compares claws, stains and rub counts in detail.

The table below pairs each fabric with what it does with hair and the method we suggest. Martindale is the test we use for abrasion, and a higher number means a fabric wears longer under rubbing. It says nothing about how much hair a fabric holds. The pet ratings are our own assessment, not an independent test.

The sections below explain the cautions behind the right-hand column.

Aquaforte Velvet, Performance Chenille and corduroy

Aquaforte Velvet is the easiest of our fabrics for hair. We developed it with pet owners in mind, and its dense construction and lower static mean fur sits on top instead of working in. A weekly vacuum and an occasional wipe with a damp microfiber cloth is a sensible routine. You can find it on our Orian, Atmosphere, Ciello, Gaia and Cassini sofas.

Performance Chenille hides hair well because its nubby surface breaks up the outline of each strand, so a sofa can look clean even when some hair remains. Hair still settles into the texture, so vacuum with the upholstery attachment instead of relying on the look. Our Performance Chenille colors are rated Good by us for pets.

Corduroy conceals hair in some colors, but fur gathers in the channels. Run the vacuum along the ribs, not across them, and keep the pressure light so the texture stays even. Our corduroy care notes mention that the channels and ribbed texture need care.

Aquaforte, Performance Fabric and textured weaves

Aquaforte (regular) has excellent stain resistance, but its directional weave can hold hair, and our own care notes say pet hair may need more attention. Vacuum more often than you would on Velvet, and make short, slow passes so the attachment lifts hair instead of pushing it along the grain.

Performance Fabric is forgiving to clean, but its more open weave can trap fur between fibers. Vacuum regularly with the upholstery attachment, then wipe with a damp, well-wrung microfiber cloth in slow strokes. Test any cleaner in a hidden spot first. Our guide to what Performance Fabric is explains the difference between it and Aquaforte.

Textured Weave and Performance Textured Weave have an open, thick weave that holds on to fur. Be gentle: aggressive rubbing can damage the weave, so use light vacuuming and avoid stiff brushes.

Bouclé needs the lightest touch. Its loops can catch and distort if you scrub or drag a nozzle across them. Use low suction with a soft brush head, collect surface hair with a lint roller between vacuums, and press gently with a barely damp cloth for light marks. The cover is machine washable, but we advise spot cleaning to maintain its look, since washing can reduce the fluffy loft over time.

What about removable covers and deeper cleaning?

When vacuuming and rollers have done what they can, removable covers are the reset. On our Ciello, Gaia, Atmosphere and Cassini sofas, the upholstered components have removable covers. On Ciello, the seat, back and arm cushion covers zip off and the base cover is held under the seat base with Velcro. On Neptune and Orian, the seat and back cushion covers are removable, but the arm and base upholstery is fixed, so those parts only get surface cleaning.

To wash a removable cover, follow your care label. Our general instructions are:

  • Machine wash cold with a mild, fragrance-free detergent.
  • Lay flat to air dry and never use a tumble dryer.
  • Put the cover back only when it is completely dry.

Before washing, vacuum or shake out the cover over a surface you can sweep, so less hair goes into the machine. That is general advice, not a Cozey instruction. For more on the schedule, see how often to wash sofa covers, and for how built-in covers compare with slipcovers, read removable covers vs slipcovers or our sofa covers and slipcovers guide.

Which colors hide pet hair best?

Color decides how visible hair is, while the fabric decides how easily you remove it. Match the sofa to your pet's coat: a warm tan or light neutral conceals light or golden fur, and a darker shade conceals dark fur. A dark sofa makes pale hair more obvious, so dark is not automatically the easy choice with a white dog or cat.

In our range, Crumble in Aquaforte Velvet suits light fur, and Chocolate in Aquaforte Velvet suits dark fur. Mid-tone neutrals and textured surfaces tend to blend mixed coats. The most durable sofa fabric for pets guide lists the chenille colors for each coat, and a free swatch held against your pet tells you more than any list. Everyday habits that mean less hair on the sofa

Habits matter as much as tools, and they are free.

  • Brush your pet regularly. Hair removed on a brush does not end up on the cushions.
  • Use a washable throw. A blanket on a favorite spot catches hair and can go in the wash.
  • Vacuum on a schedule. A few minutes each week keeps hair from working into the fabric.
  • Fluff loose cushions where your sofa needs it, as our guide to keeping sofa cushions plump explains.

These are general suggestions and not product specifications.

Our recommendation

  • Easiest hair removal: Aquaforte Velvet, with a weekly vacuum and a damp microfiber wipe.
  • A textured look that hides hair: Performance Chenille, vacuumed with the upholstery attachment.
  • A ribbed look: corduroy, vacuumed along the channels with a light touch.
  • Looks over low maintenance: Performance Fabric, regular Aquaforte or bouclé work visually, but hair needs more attention, and we rate them lower for pets than Aquaforte Velvet.
  • Heavy shedding: choose a sofa with removable covers, and match the color to your pet's coat.
  • Unsure: order free swatches and test them with your own pet's hair.

Frequently Asked Questions

The easiest way is to start dry. Vacuum the seats, backs, arms and seams with an upholstery attachment, then use a lint roller on whatever remains. If a film of fine hair is still on the surface, wipe slowly with a microfiber cloth that is damp, not wet, and let the fabric dry fully before anyone sits down. This order protects the surface and takes only a few minutes. On looped fabrics such as bouclé, keep suction low and use a soft brush head so the loops are not distorted.

Smooth, dense fabrics release hair best. In our range, that is Aquaforte Velvet: its dense construction and lower static mean hair clings less and is easier to lift off. Performance Chenille hides hair well, though it settles into the texture, so it needs vacuuming. Looped, ribbed and open weaves hold on more tightly, including bouclé, corduroy, Performance Fabric and the textured weaves. Regular Aquaforte has a directional weave that can hold hair as well. Our pet ratings are our own assessment, not an independent test.

The color closest to your pet's coat hides hair best. A warm tan or light neutral conceals light or golden fur, and a darker shade conceals dark fur. A dark sofa shows pale hair clearly, so dark is not always the easy choice if your pet is white or cream. In our range, Crumble in Aquaforte Velvet suits light fur, and Chocolate in Aquaforte Velvet suits dark fur. Mid-tone neutrals and textured fabrics tend to blend mixed coats, and a free swatch held against your pet gives the clearest answer.

A damp rubber glove or squeegee is a common household trick for gathering hair, but it is general advice and not a Cozey instruction. It can pull on looped, ribbed or open weaves, so we would not use it on bouclé, corduroy or the textured weaves, and we would test it first in a hidden spot on any fabric. On smooth surfaces such as Aquaforte Velvet, a lint roller or vacuum is gentler and does the same job, so we suggest those first.

Hair itself does not wear a fabric out, but fur and the dust it carries can work into the weave over time, and rubbing hard to remove it can distort looped or textured surfaces. That is why gentle, regular vacuuming is better than occasional hard scrubbing. Claws are the larger risk to upholstery, since they hook and pull threads. Our guide to the most durable sofa fabric for pets covers claws and rub counts, and our removable covers let you wash or replace a cover rather than the whole sofa.

Where covers are removable, yes. On our Ciello, Gaia, Atmosphere and Cassini sofas the upholstered components have removable covers, and on Neptune and Orian the seat and back cushion covers come off. Machine wash cold with a mild, fragrance-free detergent, lay flat to dry, never use a tumble dryer, and refit the cover only when it is fully dry. Check your care label first. Bouclé covers are machine washable, but we advise spot cleaning to maintain their look, and fixed arm and base upholstery cannot be washed this way.

A weekly vacuum is a reasonable starting point for most homes, with a lint roller for quick touch-ups between. This is general advice, not a product specification. Heavy shedders, long-haired pets and shedding seasons call for more frequent passes, and fabrics that hold on to hair, such as regular Aquaforte, Performance Fabric or bouclé, benefit from shorter, more frequent sessions. If you find hair is building up in the seams or between cushions, add a quick pass there each time you vacuum.
