Short answer: A slipcover is a loose fabric case that you pull over a finished sofa, while a removable cover is part of the sofa itself: it is cut to fit the cushions, arms or base and comes off for washing. Built-in removable covers usually stay in place better and look more like regular upholstery, but tailored covers take some effort to put back on. On our sofas, the covers are fully removable on Ciello, Gaia, Atmosphere and Cassini, while Neptune and Orian have removable seat and back cushion covers with fixed arms and bases.
The real question is not just "can the cover come off?" but "which parts come off, how hard is it to put them back, and can I replace them later?" The answers decide whether a washable sofa is easier to live with or only easier to sell.

What is the difference between a slipcover and a removable cover?
The two terms overlap, so it helps to separate three kinds of fabric covering. Our guide to sofa covers and slipcovers and our guide to the best slipcovered sofas go deeper on each.
- Aftermarket slipcover: a separate fitted cover that goes over a sofa you already own. It can refresh or protect an older sofa, but most are sized for standard shapes and can sit loosely on a sectional or modular sofa.
- Removable cushion covers: the seat and back cushions have covers that unzip or detach, while the arms and base stay upholstered. This makes the high-contact areas easy to wash.
- Built-in removable upholstery: the covers are designed with the sofa and can include the arms, back and base. They fit closely, so the sofa looks like permanently upholstered furniture.
When you shop, the first question to ask is "exactly which parts of this sofa can come off, be washed and be replaced?" A sofa described as "washable" can mean any of the three.
Which is easier to live with day to day?
Neither type is automatically better. The table compares how each behaves in everyday use. It describes the types in general terms, so it is general advice, not a product specification.
Which is easier to live with day to day?
| Everyday question | Loose aftermarket slipcover | Built-in removable cover |
|---|---|---|
| Fit and look | Relaxed, can wrinkle or shift | Tailored, close to regular upholstery |
| Staying in place | May need tucking and adjusting | Held by fasteners placed to keep it in position |
| Washing | Whole cover, often large and heavy | Cover by cover, so you can wash only the part that needs it |
| Putting it back on | Usually quick, but fit varies | Takes some effort because the fit is close |
| Replacing later | Depends on the maker of the cover | Depends on the collection |
Our covers use hook-and-loop fasteners, placed to keep each cover in position once it is reinstalled. The trade-off of a close fit is that removing and refitting a cover takes some effort, and you may need to shift a module to reach it. For many households that is a fair exchange for a sofa that looks neat between washes.
Which of our sofas have removable covers?
Removability depends on the collection. This is what comes off and what stays fixed on each of our modular sofas.
Which of our sofas have removable covers?
| Collection | What comes off | What stays fixed |
|---|---|---|
| Ciello | Seat, back and arm cushion covers zip off; base cover held under the seat base with Velcro | Frame and foam |
| Gaia | Seat cushions, back cushions, arms and base | Frame and foam |
| Atmosphere | Seats, arms, backrests and upholstered base components | Frame and foam |
| Cassini | Seats, curved wedges, corners, arms and backrests | Frame and foam |
| Neptune | Seat and back cushion covers | Arm and base upholstery |
| Orian | Seat and back cushion covers | Arm and base upholstery |
On Neptune and Orian, a module that can be moved or rearranged is not the same as a cover that can be washed. The arms and bases are fixed, so follow the care instructions for fixed upholstery rather than the washing machine. Our sleeper sofa care guide covers that difference in detail. If you want to compare how each collection feels to sit on, our Ciello vs Gaia and Atmosphere vs Ciello guides are the place to start.
Are removable covers worth it?
For most households with children, pets or frequent guests, yes, as long as you know what they do and do not solve.
- Easier cleaning: you can take off an affected cover and wash it, instead of treating a spot on fixed upholstery.
- A fresh look: with compatible replacement covers, you can change the color or fabric without replacing the sofa.
- A longer life for the sofa: if one cover is damaged, you may be able to replace that cover rather than the whole piece.
Removable covers do not make a sofa stain-proof (see our guide to stain-resistant sofas). Liquids can still soak into fabric, and claws can still snag it. A cover also does not change the cushion underneath: the loose foam and fibre cushions on Ciello and Gaia still need fluffing roughly every one to two weeks, while the layered foam seating on Atmosphere and Cassini needs no regular fluffing routine. Replacement covers are available for compatible collections.
What are the best washable slipcover-style sofas for kids and pets?
The cover system matters, but so does the fabric you put on it. These are the fabrics most relevant to homes with young children and pets. Martindale is the standard abrasion test, and a higher count means more rubs before wear shows. Pet suitability is our own assessment, not an independent rating.
What are the best washable slipcover-style sofas for kids and pets?
| Fabric | Martindale | Pet suitability | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aquaforte Velvet | More than 200,000 | Excellent | Dense construction developed with pets in mind, with excellent stain resistance |
| Chenille (Performance Chenille) | 48,000 | Good | Textured, helps conceal hair and small marks, though claws can catch it |
| Performance Fabric | 48,000 | Moderate | A forgiving, washable everyday fabric |
| Aquaforte (regular) | 78,000 | Good | Strong stain resistance; the directional weave can hold hair, so vacuum a little more often |
| Bouclé | 15,000 | Generally not advised | Machine washable, but we advise spot cleaning to keep its look |
For a household with active pets, we point first to a fully removable collection in Aquaforte Velvet or Chenille. Our guides to the best washable sofas for pets and kids and the most durable sofa fabric for pets give the full comparison. You can browse each fabric on our Aquaforte and velvet and chenille pages.
Can you replace covers later?
Yes, on compatible collections. Replacement covers are available for Atmosphere, Cassini, Ciello and Gaia, so you can refresh the color or look of the sofa, or swap a damaged cover, without buying a new sofa. Because the arms and bases on Neptune and Orian are fixed upholstery, their covers cannot be fully swapped.
Compare that with a loose slipcover from a third party: whether you can buy a matching replacement years later depends entirely on the maker. Ask that question before buying any slipcovered sofa, from any brand.
How do you wash removable covers?
Check the care label on your own cover first, because instructions can vary between fabrics. In general, wash cold with a mild, fragrance-free detergent, lay the cover flat to air dry, do not tumble dry, and reinstall it only when it is completely dry. Bouclé is machine washable, but we advise spot cleaning it instead to maintain its look, and bouclé can lose some of its loft after repeated washing. For wash frequency by fabric, see our guide on how often to wash sofa covers, for marks between washes see our spot-cleaning guide, and for fabric-by-fabric cleaning, see how to clean your sofa.
Our recommendation
Choose by the household you have, not the label.
- Families with young children or pets: pick a collection with fully removable covers (Ciello, Gaia, Atmosphere or Cassini), so any part can be washed, and replacement covers are available.
- You want to change your sofa color later: choose a fully removable collection, since replacement covers are available for Atmosphere, Cassini, Ciello and Gaia.
- You need a sleeper: Neptune and Orian have washable seat and back cushion covers, with fixed arms and bases. Choose them for the sleeper function, knowing the arms and bases are cleaned differently.
- You already own a sofa you like: an aftermarket slipcover can refresh it, but expect a looser fit.
- You want the least effort day to day: removable covers reduce cleaning effort, but they do not remove it. Plan some time and effort to refit a tailored cover.
