Why Our Modular Furniture Fits: Stairs, Lifts and Doorways

Why our sofas, bed frames and tables go through narrow stairs, lifts and standard doorways, with the box sizes and weights that show it and a short guide to checking your route.

A Cozey modular sofa in a living room

Short answer: Our sofas, beds and other pieces ship as modules in separate boxes, so what has to pass through your stairs, lift or doorway is a box, not a finished piece. Each box is listed in this guide with its size and weight. Across our indoor sofa collections, the longest module box is the Orian arm box at 41.7 inches (106 cm), and the heaviest is the Ciello chaise extension box at 27 kg. Still compare the longest box with your tightest turn, using the steps and tables below.

Modular furniture is built around a simple idea: each piece arrives in parts instead of one large item. That is what makes steep stairs, tight landings and small lifts in condos, apartments and older homes manageable. Your route still deserves a few minutes with a tape measure, so you can match the longest box to your tightest turn before delivery day.

Why our modules go through tight spaces

Our sofas are modular, so each collection arrives as separate boxes rather than one large piece. Because each box is a module, a sofa can pass through spaces that one assembled piece could not. A sofa order includes seat and backrest boxes and, depending on the collection and your configuration, arm, ottoman, corner or chaise boxes. Depending on the collection, legs and hardware are packed inside the module boxes or sent in small separate boxes. For a breakdown by collection, see which box has my legs and hardware.

Our Ara upholstered bed frame and our dining tables also ship in several boxes. Our mattresses each ship in one box. The sizes in this guide are the carton size and weight for each module.

What to measure along your route

The advice in this section is general advice for moving any furniture, not a product specification, and your building's rules may add their own limits.

  • Doorways. Measure the clear opening, from the door stop on one side to the edge of the open door or frame on the other. Hinges, handles and door stops can reduce the usable width, so measure at the tightest point. Measure the height too.
  • Hallways and turns. A box that fits down a hallway may still need room to pivot at a corner. Note the width of the hallway and any radiators, light fixtures or railings that stick out.
  • Stairs. Measure the width between the walls or between wall and banister, the headroom at the lowest point of the ceiling above the stairs, and the depth of any landing where the stairs turn.
  • Landings. A landing where the stairs turn can be the hardest point. Measure its depth and width, and the height of the ceiling above it.
  • Lifts. Measure the door opening (width and height) and the inside of the cabin (width, depth and height). Check whether the building asks you to book the lift or use a service lift.
  • The final doorway. Measure the entrance to the room where the sofa will go, not only the front door.

A step-by-step measuring checklist

  • Step 1: Walk the route. Start at the entrance of the building and walk to the room. Write down every door, turn, staircase and lift on the way.
  • Step 2: Find the narrowest point. Measure the width and height of each opening. The smallest measurement is your limit for the whole route.
  • Step 3: Measure diagonally. For stairwells and lifts, also measure the diagonal, because a long box can sometimes pass at an angle.
  • Step 4: Check for obstacles. Look for banisters, low ceilings, light fixtures, sprinkler heads and anything that sticks out.
  • Step 5: Compare with the box sizes. Use the tables below. A box is a rectangle, so its two smaller sides are what must pass through a narrow opening. Its longest side can go through lengthwise.
  • Step 6: Confirm building rules. If you live in a condo or apartment, ask building management about lift booking, move-in hours and any rules for deliveries.

The box sizes that make it fit

These are our box sizes and weights. The table shows, for each sofa collection, the longest module box (seats, backrests, arms, corners, chaises and ottomans) and the heaviest. Leg, hardware, cover and optional headrest boxes are not included.

Where several boxes share the longest length, we list one. For Ciello, Ciello XL, Gaia, Gaia XL and Atmosphere, other boxes have the same longest length with a different width, height or weight. For example, the Atmosphere storage long ottoman is also 105 cm long and weighs 21.7 kg.

Each collection is made of several boxes, so most are smaller than the figures above. For a full view of your configuration, see our guide on which Cozey sofa configuration fits your living room.

If one spot on your route is tight

If your measurements show a tight spot, you have options before you order. Start by comparing the longest and widest boxes in the table with your narrowest opening. If a collection has a box that is too long or too wide, another collection or configuration may have smaller boxes.

Our recommendation

  • Tight stairs or a narrow stairwell: compare the box size column with the narrowest width and the landing depth. Choose a collection whose boxes are short enough to turn on your landing.
  • Small lift: check the cabin depth against the longest box in your configuration, and ask your building about booking the lift.
  • Narrow doorways: compare the two smaller sides of each box with your clear door opening, not just the sofa's finished width.
  • Heavy boxes: if you will carry boxes up stairs yourself, note the weights in the table and plan for help (general advice).
  • Not sure: measure first, then pick your collection. You can browse every collection on our sofa page.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on your door and the collection you choose, so we cannot promise a fit for every opening. What we can tell you is the box size. Our sofas ship as separate module boxes, and the longest box in our indoor collections is the Orian arm box at 41.7 x 12.6 x 22.4 inches (106 x 32 x 57 cm). Its two smaller sides, 12.6 and 22.4 inches (32 and 57 cm), are what has to clear your door. Measure your narrowest opening, then compare it with the box sizes in the table for the collection you want.

Because a sofa arrives in several boxes instead of one assembled piece, the question is whether each box can get up and around your stairs. Measure the width of the stairwell, the headroom at the lowest point and the depth of any landing where the stairs turn, then compare those numbers with the box sizes in our table. Most boxes are smaller than the longest one, the Orian arm box at 41.7 x 12.6 x 22.4 inches (106 x 32 x 57 cm). This measuring advice is general guidance, not a Cozey specification.

The heaviest sofa box in the collections listed here is the Ciello chaise extension at 27 kg. Other heavy boxes include the Ciello XL storage ottoman at 26.8 kg, the Neptune sleeper seat at 24.6 kg and the Orian sleeper seat at 23.4 kg. Backrest, arm and cushion boxes are lighter. The table above gives the heaviest box for every collection, so you can plan who will help you carry boxes up the stairs.

Measure the door opening, then the inside of the cabin: width, depth and height. Compare the cabin depth and the door opening with the longest box in your configuration and with the two smaller sides of that box. Many buildings also have a service lift or booking rules for deliveries, so ask your building manager early. This is general advice, not a Cozey specification. The box sizes for each of our collections are in the table above.

No. The Ara upholstered bed frame ships in several boxes, such as side panels, a headboard, slats and a metal frame. The longest box is the side panels box for Queen and King at 45.3 x 17.7 x 15.2 inches (115 x 45 x 38.5 cm). In Australia, the heaviest box is the King pillow headboard, or the King storage drawer (storage bed only), at 21.6 kg. Each mattress ships in a single box. Use the table above to check each piece before you order.

The box size is the packed carton for one module, such as a seat, backrest or arm. The sofa size is what you get after you assemble those modules together, which is much larger. For getting furniture home, the box size matters. For deciding whether the sofa fits the room, the finished size matters. Both numbers are worth knowing before you order. Our sectional sofa size guide explains how to measure the room for the finished layout.

If the boxes will not fit through a narrow opening, the best time to find out is before you order. Compare the box sizes in the table with your narrowest door, landing and lift. A different collection or configuration may use smaller boxes. For what happens after you order, read our shipping and delivery guide, which explains how delivery works. We do not describe any policy on this page, so check that guide for current details, and remeasure if anything about your route is unclear.
