Cozey Naos Lounge Chair: Who It Suits and What It Is Like to Sit in

A plain guide to our Naos lounge chair: its size, seat, materials, colours and care, and which rooms and people it suits best.

A Cozey Naos lounge chair

Short answer: Our Naos lounge chair measures 31.9 inches (81 cm) wide, 31.7 inches (80.5 cm) deep and 30.1 inches (76.5 cm) high, with a seat that is 22 inches (55.5 cm) deep and 17 inches (43.5 cm) high. It is built from ash timber and dual-layer foam, in a mid-century shape. It suits a lounge room, home office or bedroom corner where you have about 32 by 32 inches (81 by 80.5 cm) of floor, and it is less suited to a very narrow nook or to anyone who wants removable covers.

A photo does not tell you how deep a chair's seat is or how much floor it takes. This guide gives the exact numbers, describes what the seat is like, and says plainly who the chair is for and who should look at another one.

How big is the Naos lounge chair?

Naos is a square-ish chair: its width and depth are almost the same, and its back sits at a moderate height. All figures below are for the assembled chair.

Seat depth22 inches55.5 cm

Naos ships in one box measuring 32.3 x 25.6 x 21.7 inches (82 x 65 x 55 cm) and weighing 22.4 kg. That is useful to know if you have a tight stairwell or entry. Our guide to measuring stairs, lifts and doorways shows how to check the route before delivery.

What is it like to sit in?

The seat is 22 inches (55.5 cm) deep and 17 inches (43.5 cm) high. We designed it for a relaxed, supported posture. The backrest and the seat each use dual-layer foam over a 13 mm plywood base, and the timber armrests give you a firm place to rest your arms.

Two things are worth knowing before you order:

  • The foam is firm at first. It is a high-performance, durable foam, and it may need a short break-in period before it reaches its best comfort. The cushions cannot be fluffed the way our sofa cushions can. You press and smooth them by hand instead, and they should need little upkeep.
  • The seat height is mid-range. At 17 inches (43.5 cm), the seat sits between our lowest chair, Hubbel, and our highest, Mira. Our guide to how to choose an accent chair compares all five of our lounge chairs side by side.

If you like to curl up with your feet on the seat, a deeper chair may suit you better. If you like to sit upright for reading, working or conversation, the depth and the firm foam are a good match.

What is the Naos chair made of?

Naos has a solid ash timber frame for the armrests and legs, finished in a satin Oak or Walnut stain. The seat and the back are built on 13 mm plywood, topped with dual-layer foam and a layer of fibre padding, and then covered in 100% polyester fabric. The fabrics are OEKO-TEX certified. The hardware in the box includes screws, timber plugs and an Allen key, four felt floor protectors are included for the legs, and our product page describes assembly as tool-free.

Each fabric comes with a set timber finish, so you choose a colour combination rather than mixing and matching. On our site you can choose from:

The Martindale test measures abrasion resistance, and a higher count means a fabric that resists wear for longer. For a closer look at how these fabrics differ, read our guides to performance fabric and to sofa fabric types. You can also order free swatches from the product page before you decide. If you are trying to match a colour to the rest of the room, our guide to choosing a sofa colour applies to chairs too.

Does the Naos chair fit in a small room?

It fits a small room if you can spare roughly 32 inches (81 cm) square of floor, plus walking room. Naos is wider than our Vela lounge chair, which is 22.9 inches (58.1 cm) wide, and than our Hubbel, which is 27.0 inches (68.5 cm) wide. Its depth of 31.7 inches (80.5 cm) is close to theirs, at 30.5 inches (77.5 cm) for Vela and 32.7 inches (83 cm) for Hubbel.

Its overall height is 30.1 inches (76.5 cm), so the back stays moderate rather than towering over the room.

Some general advice, not a product specification: leave about 30 to 36 inches (76 to 91 cm) for a walkway beside the chair, and mark the footprint on the floor with masking tape for a day before you order. For more on arranging chairs around a sofa, see our guide to pairing a sofa, accent chair and coffee table.

How do you care for the Naos chair?

The covers on Naos are not removable, so care is about vacuuming and spot cleaning rather than washing. Our care steps are:

  • Vacuum regularly with an upholstery attachment to remove dust, debris and pet hair.
  • Blot spills right away with minimal water and a mild, non-abrasive cleaner. Do not rub. We recommend professional cleaning for persistent stains.
  • Spot test first in a hidden area before you use any cleaner, and avoid harsh chemicals.
  • Dust the timber with a soft, dry cloth. For marks on the frame, wipe gently with a damp cloth and mild soap, then dry it right away.

Because the covers stay on, we suggest choosing the fabric with your household in mind. In our own assessment, Performance Fabric is moderately suited to homes with pets, and Aquaforte Velvet is the most abrasion-resistant option we offer for this chair. Our guide to cleaning a sofa by fabric type has more detail on each fabric. Naos is covered by our 5-year limited warranty.

Who is the Naos chair for, and who should look elsewhere?

Naos suits you if:

  • You want a mid-century look with real timber arms and legs.
  • You want an upright, supportive seat for reading, working or conversation.
  • You have a lounge room, home office or bedroom corner with about 32 inches (81 cm) of width.
  • You prefer to keep a chair simple, with spot cleaning rather than washing.

Look at another chair if:

  • You need removable covers. Our Hubbel, Mira and Cassini lounge chairs have removable covers.
  • You want a very narrow chair. Vela is our narrowest.
  • You want a swivel. Only our Cassini lounge chair offers one.

What does Naos go with?

We suggest pairing Naos with our Atmosphere and Ciello sofas, or with the Altitude storage cabinet in a larger room. It also pairs well with our Mensa tables: the Mensa side table is a natural neighbour at the arm of the chair. For help choosing a table height, our guide to choosing a side table explains how to match it to the arm and seat, and our guide to neutral colour palettes can help you pick a fabric that works with the timber.

Our recommendation

  • Choose Naos if you want an upright, supportive chair with a mid-century shape, and you are happy with spot cleaning.
  • Choose Naos in Aquaforte Velvet if you want the most abrasion-resistant covering we offer on this chair.
  • Choose Vela if your corner is narrower than 32 inches (81 cm), or Hubbel if you want a shallower seat.
  • Choose Hubbel, Mira or the Cassini lounge chair if removable covers matter most.
  • Order swatches first if you are unsure about colour, since the fabric and timber are sold as fixed combinations.

For the other chairs in this range, read our guides to the Vela lounge chair, Mira chair, Hubbel lounge chair and Cassini lounge chair.

Frequently Asked Questions

The seat on Naos is 22 inches (55.5 cm) deep and 17 inches (43.5 cm) high. That is deep enough to sit back comfortably with your back against the backrest, and shallow enough to get out of easily. The whole chair is 31.7 inches (80.5 cm) deep, so the seat takes up most of the footprint. Our Hubbel has a shallower seat, and our Cassini lounge chair has a deeper one, so if seat depth is the main thing you care about, compare those three side by side on the product pages before you decide.

Naos has armrests and legs in ash timber, finished in a satin Oak or Walnut stain, and a 13 mm plywood base under the seat and back. The seat and the back each use dual-layer foam and a layer of fibre padding, and the cover is 100% polyester fabric that is OEKO-TEX certified. You can choose Performance Fabric, Performance Textured Weave or Aquaforte Velvet, and each fabric comes with a set timber finish. It ships in one box with the hardware, an Allen key and four felt floor protectors.

It can, if you have about 32 inches (81 cm) of width and depth to give it. Naos is 31.9 inches (81 cm) wide and 31.7 inches (80.5 cm) deep, which is larger than Vela or Hubbel but still a single-seat footprint. Its back is 30.1 inches (76.5 cm) high, so it does not dominate a room. As general advice, not a product specification, leave about 30 to 36 inches (76 to 91 cm) for walking space, and mark the footprint on the floor before ordering.

No, the covers on our Naos chair are not removable, so they cannot be machine washed. We suggest vacuuming regularly with an upholstery attachment and blotting spills right away with minimal water and a mild, non-abrasive cleaner, testing in a hidden spot first. Persistent stains may need professional cleaning. If removable covers matter to you, our Hubbel, Mira and Cassini lounge chairs have them. You can read our full guide to cleaning a sofa by fabric type for more on each fabric, and we offer a 5-year limited warranty on Naos.

We designed Naos for a relaxed, supported posture, with dual-layer foam in both the seat and the back. The foam is high-performance and durable, and it may need a short break-in period before it reaches its best comfort, so it can feel firm at first. The seat is 17 inches (43.5 cm) high and 22 inches (55.5 cm) deep. Comfort is personal, so if you can, compare seat depth and height with a chair you already like, and order free swatches to check the fabric against your skin and your room.

Choose by how you live. Performance Fabric has a Martindale rub count of 48,000, Performance Textured Weave has 54,000, and Aquaforte Velvet has more than 200,000, which makes it our most abrasion-resistant choice for Naos. Because the covers are not removable, a harder-wearing fabric is a sensible pick for a busy household or a chair near a door. Colour matters too, and each fabric comes with a fixed timber finish, so look at the Oak and Walnut tones against your floor and tables before you decide.
