Why the Cozey Gaia Sofa Is So Comfortable: Deep Seats, Soft Foam and Support

How the Gaia sofa is built to feel soft and relaxed, which measurements matter, and who should choose it or look at Ciello instead.

The Cozey Gaia sofa

Short answer: Our Gaia sofa is comfortable because of four things working together: a deep seat (24.2 inches in Regular, 25.6 inches in XL), a thick fiber cushion over a core of D35 high-density foam, an extra 1.5 inch layer of D35 foam in the seat base, and a taller back with loose cushions. It is a soft, sink-in sofa for lounging, not a firm or upright one, and its covers are removable and machine washable.

A sofa can look inviting and still feel wrong after ten minutes. Softness, depth and back support each change how you sit, so it helps to know what is inside Gaia before you choose a size. This guide explains the comfort mechanics. For layouts, sizes and fabrics, read our Gaia sofa guide.

What makes the Gaia sofa comfortable?

Four design choices explain most of the feel: a deep seat, soft seat cushions over foam, a padded base, and a taller back with loose cushions. The table gives the number behind each one.

Our seat depth and height guide explains how we measure these numbers, and why seat depth and seat height should be read together.

How is the Gaia seat built from the base up?

Comfort comes from layers, so picture them from the frame upward.

  • Frame: larch and plywood.
  • Base layer: 1.5 inches of D35 foam on top of the base. We added this layer in 2026, after customers told us they could feel the wooden frame through the seat on earlier versions. An older review may describe a version without it.
  • Seat cushion: 9.4 inches thick, with fiber on both sides of a 2.4 inch foam core. The foam gives the seat its support, and the fiber gives it the soft top.
  • Back and arm cushions: loose, 7.9 inches thick and fiber filled, so you can lean into them.

Gaia and Ciello share this seat construction, which is why our sofa comfort guide lists them as our two softest collections. Loose cushions soften as the fiber settles with use, so plan to fluff them every week or two and rotate the seat cushions, as described in our guide to keeping sofa cushions plump.

Why does a deep seat feel so relaxed?

Seat depth decides what you can do with your legs. On a deep seat you can sit back with your legs up, sit sideways in a corner, or curl up. On a shallow seat you may have to choose between leaning back and keeping your feet on the floor.

Gaia Regular is 24.2 inches deep, deeper than Ciello Regular at 21.7 inches. Gaia XL is 25.6 inches deep, and Ciello XL is deeper at 26.4 inches. On Gaia, the step from Regular to XL adds about 1.4 inches of depth, and a comparable three-seater is about 7 inches wider overall.

Deeper is not always better. If the seat is too deep for your legs, you may not be able to rest your feet on the floor while keeping your back against the cushion. That is general advice, and it is why we suggest the fit test below.

How much back and arm support does Gaia give?

Our product page describes Gaia as having a taller backrest and higher back cushions than Ciello, at an overall height of about 39 inches. That gives your back and shoulders a place to rest when you sit back. Gaia has one back style, with slim arms and French seam cushions. Ciello offers Original and High Angled backs, and the High Angled back leans further back.

If you want to change the back angle to suit your body, Ciello gives you more choices. If you prefer a tailored back that holds you upright while the seat stays soft, Gaia is the simpler pick. Because the back cushions are loose, they shift a little when you lean.

Which uses is Gaia best for?

Gaia suits relaxed, everyday sitting. The table shows how the build helps in each case and what to add.

For kids, we advise against jumping on any sofa, and we suggest securing the sofa to the wall with an anti-tip kit to reduce the risk of tipping.

What is Gaia not?

Gaia is not a firm or upright sofa. If you prefer a firm seat and a structured sitting position, our comfort guide points to Neptune as our firmest collection, and to Cassini and Atmosphere as more structured options.

It also asks for a little care. The loose cushions need fluffing, the seat settles with use, and the cushions arrive vacuum-packed and can take up to two weeks to expand fully. If you want a soft sofa but like to adjust the back, Ciello may suit you better, and our Ciello vs Gaia guide compares the two side by side.

How do the covers affect comfort and care?

The covers are removable and machine washable, and they include the seat cushions, back cushions, upholstered arms and base. We suggest cold water, a gentle cycle, air drying, no bleach and no high heat. Compatible replacement covers let you change the color without replacing the sofa, and the cushions underneath are the same whichever fabric you choose.

Gaia comes in Performance Natural Weave, Performance Textured Weave, Performance Chenille, Aquaforte and Aquaforte Velvet, with Martindale counts from 18,000 to more than 200,000. In our own assessment, Aquaforte Velvet and Performance Chenille are good choices for homes with pets. A ten-minute sit test for Gaia

Soft sofas are easiest to judge by sitting, so use the numbers as a checklist.

  • Sit all the way back. Can you rest your feet where you want them, with your back on the cushion?
  • Try your usual posture: upright, legs up, curled up or reclined.
  • Check the back height against your shoulders, because Gaia has one back style.
  • If two people share the sofa and differ in height, compare Gaia Regular with a shallower sofa and an ottoman.

Our product page lists a 30-day free trial and a 5-year warranty (see our warranty page), so you can also test the sofa at home.

Our recommendation

Pick by how you sit.

  • You want a soft seat and a back that holds you upright: Gaia Regular.
  • You like to stretch out, nap or curl up: Gaia XL, with a chaise or storage ottoman.
  • You want to adjust the back angle or want the deepest seat: Ciello, in Original or High Angled, or Ciello XL.
  • You prefer a firm, upright seat: look at the firmer collections in our comfort guide.
  • You have kids or pets: Gaia in Aquaforte Velvet or Performance Chenille, with washable covers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, if you like a soft, deep seat. We build Gaia with a 9.4 inch seat cushion, polypropylene fiber around a 2.4 inch core of D35 foam, and an extra 1.5 inch layer of D35 foam in the base. The Regular seat is 24.2 inches deep and the XL seat is 25.6 inches deep, so you can sit back with your legs up. Comfort is personal, so try the depth and softness against how you usually sit.

The Gaia Regular seat is 24.2 inches deep and the Gaia XL seat is 25.6 inches deep, both measured with the back cushions in place. The seat height is 21.3 inches in both sizes, and the overall height is about 39 inches. The chaise is deeper still, at 55.1 inches in Regular and 59 inches in XL. A deeper seat suits sitting back with your legs up, so if you prefer your feet flat on the floor, test the depth first.

Gaia is one of our softest sofas. Its seat has a thick fiber cushion over a foam core, on top of a padded base, and its back cushions are loose and fiber filled. Our comfort guide lists Gaia and Ciello as our softest collections and Neptune as our firmest. The cushions may feel somewhat firmer when new and soften as the fiber settles with normal use. If you want a firm, upright seat, Gaia is probably not the right choice, and a firmer collection will suit you better.

Yes. The deep seat, soft cushions and chaise make Gaia suited to curling up, stretching out and watching movies. Our comfort guide names Gaia XL among our first recommendations for soft, relaxed naps, and the XL chaise is 59 inches deep. Gaia is not a sofa bed, so it is meant for casual naps rather than overnight sleeping. If you want to put your feet up, the storage ottoman is 21.3 inches high, the same height as the seat.

Our product page describes Gaia as having a taller backrest and higher back cushions than Ciello, with an overall height of about 39 inches. That gives your back and shoulders a place to rest when you lean back. The cushions are loose and 7.9 inches thick, so they can shift, and you may want to pat them back into place. Gaia has one back style. If you want a more reclined angle, Ciello offers a High Angled back.

Gaia suits busy households because the covers are removable and machine washable, and they include the seat cushions, back cushions, upholstered arms and base. Each seat supports up to 350 lb. In our own assessment, Aquaforte Velvet and Performance Chenille are good choices if you also have pets. We advise against jumping on the sofa, and we suggest anchoring it to the wall with an anti-tip kit to reduce the risk of tipping. Wipe spills promptly, vacuum regularly and follow the care label on your fabric.

Loose fiber cushions soften and can look flatter in the seats you use most, so some settling is normal. We suggest fluffing the seat and back cushions every one to two weeks. Lift the cushion, shake it, fluff it by hand and reshape it, and rotate the seat cushions so the compression is shared. The cushions arrive vacuum-packed and can take up to two weeks to expand fully, so give them time. The extra 1.5 inch foam layer in the base also adds cushioning between the seat and the frame.

Both share the same cushion construction and D35 foam, including the extra layer in the base, so neither is simply softer. The difference is depth and back support. Gaia Regular is 24.2 inches deep and has one back style. Ciello Regular is shallower at 21.7 inches, Ciello XL is the deepest at 26.4 inches, and Ciello offers Original and High Angled backs. Choose Gaia for a soft seat with an upright back, and Ciello if you want to adjust the back or have the deepest seat.
