Short answer: Our Ciello sofa comes in two sizes, Regular and XL, and each size has two back and arm styles, Original and High Angled. Regular has a seat 31 inches wide and 21.7 inches deep, and XL has a seat 33.75 inches wide and 26.4 inches deep. Both sit 21.3 inches from the floor. You can add a 54.5-inch deep chaise and a storage ottoman that holds 2.65 cubic feet.

Ciello is one of our softest modular sofas, so the size and the back style change how it feels. The sections below give the exact measurements so you can pick the version that fits your body and your room.

What is Ciello and how is it built?

Ciello is a modular sofa made of seat modules, corner modules, chaise extensions and storage ottomans that connect without tools. You can start with a one-seater or a two-seater and add to it later, up to a seven-seater with two corners.

The comfort comes from the cushions. Each seat and back cushion uses synthetic fiber (no feathers) around a supportive D35 high-density foam core, and the seat base has an extra 1.5-inch layer of foam on top. The frame is plywood, with steel springs and elastic webbing in the seat base. The legs are plastic with a metal screw and are 1 inch high.

Each seat supports up to 350 pounds. Because the cushions are loose, plan to fluff and rotate them every week or two to keep their loft. Our guide to how many modules you need helps you decide how many seats to start with.

Regular vs XL: which size is right for you?

Both sizes share the same look, the same seat height and the same cushion construction. XL gives you a wider and deeper seat, which suits curling up or sitting cross-legged. Regular has a smaller footprint for a tighter room.

Regular vs XL: which size is right for you?

Seat height21.3 inches21.3 inches
Overall depth of a seat module, back included37.4 inches40.2 inches
Chaise depth54.5 inches54.5 inches
Chaise module, overall68.5 x 37.4 inches68.5 x 40.2 inches

Seat depth is measured from the front of the seat cushion to the front of the back cushion, so it changes a little with how the back cushion tilts. Our sofa seat depth and height guide compares these numbers with our other sofas.

Choose Regular if you want a more compact footprint. Choose XL if you want to stretch out or sit with your legs up, and you have the room.

Original vs High Angled: back and arm styles

Ciello has two back and arm styles. The High Angled version is more reclined, as the table shows. The Original version has a lower, more classic profile.

Original vs High Angled: back and arm styles

StyleBackrest heightArm height
Original, Regular33 inches25.2 inches
Original, XL34.3 inches26.5 inches
High Angled, Regular and XL37 inches28.5 inches

Heights are measured from the floor, with the legs, to the top of the back or arm cushion. On Regular, High Angled adds about 4 inches to the Original back height, and on XL it adds about 2.75 inches. The back and arm cushions are separate, so they are also easy to fluff and reshape.

You can also use armless modules in the middle of a longer sofa or sectional. Choose Original if you want a lower silhouette. Choose High Angled if you like to lean back.

Chaise and plateau options

A chaise extension adds a long seat at one end of your Ciello sofa for stretching out. The chaise is 54.5 inches deep, from the front of the chaise cushion to the front of the back cushion, and the module is 68.5 inches long overall in both sizes.

  • Chaise left or right: put the chaise on either end of the sofa. You can also choose a double chaise, one at each end.
  • Plateau: a plateau is built from the same extension piece as the chaise. You can add it on the left, on the right or on both sides, to extend the seating area.
  • Corner modules: these let you build an L-shaped or U-shaped sectional, from a three-seater with a corner up to a seven-seater with two corners.

The chaise cushion is vacuum sealed for shipping, so it can take up to two weeks to fully expand after delivery. Our sofa configuration guide shows how these layouts work in different rooms.

Storage ottoman

The Ciello storage ottoman works as a footrest, an extra seat and a place to put blankets or clutter. It has 2.65 cubic feet of storage under the lid in both sizes. The Regular ottoman measures 31.1 inches square and 21.3 inches high, and the XL ottoman measures 35.0 inches square and 21.3 inches high.

The ottoman is the same height as the sofa seat. Our guide to storage ottomans that double as seating compares the options across our range.

Fabrics and covers

Our Ciello fabrics are all 100% polyester with zip-off covers that are machine washable. The seat, back and arm cushion covers zip off, and the base cover is held under the seat base with Velcro. Wash cold on a gentle cycle and air dry, and avoid bleach and high heat. On the Aquaforte and Aquaforte Velvet fabrics, you can wipe spills promptly with a damp cloth first.

Abrasion resistance is measured in Martindale double rubs, and a higher number means a more durable surface.

Who Ciello suits, and who it does not

Ciello suits you if you want a deep, soft seat that you can sink into, curl up on or lounge across. It also suits you if you want a sofa that can grow, because you can add seats, a chaise or an ottoman later and rearrange them as your space changes.

It may not be the right sofa if you prefer a firm, upright seat. The cushions are soft and loose, and they soften gradually with use, so they need regular fluffing. If you want a more upright back, look at our Gaia sofa, which shares the same cushion construction but has a more upright backrest. Our Ciello vs Gaia comparison sets the two side by side, and our Atmosphere vs Ciello comparison shows how Ciello differs from our firmer, storage-focused Atmosphere sofa.

Our recommendation

  • Small room or an apartment: Ciello Regular with Original back and arms.
  • Lounging, curling up or a larger living room: Ciello XL.
  • Leaning back and a more supportive arm: the High Angled style, in either size.
  • Stretching out: add a chaise, or two for a larger sectional.
  • Footrest and storage: add the storage ottoman.
  • Homes with pets or kids: Aquaforte Velvet or Performance Chenille, with the removable covers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Both sizes have the same look, the same 21.3-inch seat height and the same cushion construction. The difference is the size of each seat. Ciello Regular has a seat 31 inches wide and 21.7 inches deep, and Ciello XL has a seat 33.75 inches wide and 26.4 inches deep. XL also adds about 2.75 inches to the overall depth of the sofa, from 37.4 inches to 40.2 inches. Choose Regular for a smaller footprint and XL for more lounging room.

The High Angled back is more reclined than the Original back. On Ciello Regular, the Original back is 33 inches high and the High Angled back is 37 inches. On Ciello XL, the Original back is 34.3 inches and the High Angled back is also 37 inches. The High Angled arm height is 28.5 inches for High Angled. Choose Original for a lower, classic shape, and High Angled if you like to lean back.

The chaise module is 68.5 inches long overall in both Ciello Regular and Ciello XL. It is 37.4 inches deep on Regular and 40.2 inches deep on XL, measured with the back in place. The seat itself is 54.5 inches deep, measured from the front of the chaise cushion to the front of the back cushion. You can place the chaise on the left or the right, or add one at each end. The chaise cushion is vacuum sealed, so it can take up to two weeks to fully expand.

The Ciello storage ottoman holds 2.65 cubic feet under its lid, which is enough for blankets, pillows and everyday clutter. That storage space is the same in both sizes. The Regular ottoman measures 31.1 inches square and 21.3 inches high, and the XL ottoman measures 35.0 inches square and 21.3 inches high. Both match the seat height of the sofa, so the ottoman works as a footrest or as an extra seat.

Yes. The seat, back and arm cushion covers zip off, and the base cover is held under the seat base with Velcro. Our Ciello fabrics are 100% polyester and machine washable. Wash cold on a gentle cycle, air dry, and avoid bleach and high heat. Corduroy benefits from a soft brush after drying to restore the pile, and Aquaforte and Aquaforte Velvet can be wiped with a damp cloth first. Compatible replacement covers also let you change the color of your sofa without replacing the frame.

It can be, depending on the fabric. Our Aquaforte Velvet is rated at more than 200,000 Martindale double rubs, and our Performance Chenille is rated at 48,000. In our own assessment, these two are good choices for homes with pets. The covers zip off and are machine washable, which helps with spills and pet hair. Because the cushions are loose, plan to fluff them every week or two. Our guide to pet-friendly sofas compares fabrics in more detail, and it is worth ordering swatches before you decide.

Yes. Ciello is modular, so you can add seat modules, corner modules, a chaise, a plateau or a storage ottoman after your first purchase, and you can rearrange the pieces as your space changes. The modules connect without tools, and assembly takes about 20 minutes per module. You can build from a one-seater up to a seven-seater with two corners. Check that the size and the back style match your existing sofa, because Regular and XL modules, and Original and High Angled backs, are different sizes.

Our Ciello and Gaia sofas share the same cushion construction: synthetic fiber around a D35 foam core, over an extra layer of D35 foam above the seat base. That makes the seat softness very similar. The main difference is the back. Gaia has a more upright backrest, while Ciello offers the Original and High Angled backs, which are more relaxed. If you like to lounge and sink in, Ciello is the better match, and if you prefer a more upright seat, look at Gaia.
