Short answer: Washable dining chairs make everyday messes easier to handle because you can take the cover off and wash it instead of scrubbing a fixed seat. Our Vela and Ushi chairs have removable, machine-washable covers, and replacement covers are available for the Vela and Aurbit chairs and the Vela bench.

Dining chairs take more spills than most furniture. Here is what to check before you buy and how to care for the covers.

Why removable covers matter

A chair with a fixed, upholstered seat is hard to clean if food or drink soaks in. A removable cover lets you wash the fabric itself, and a replacement cover can freshen the chair later without replacing the whole piece. This is especially useful in homes with children or pets.

Which Cozey dining chairs have removable covers?

  • Vela: the seat and back cushion covers are removable and machine washable.
  • Ushi: the cover is removable and machine washable.
  • Aurbit and Orsa: check the product page for the cover details of each chair.

Our dining pages describe the chair covers as removable and washable, with water-resistant Aquaforte among the fabric options. Replacement covers are sold separately for the Vela dining chair, the Aurbit dining chair and the Vela bench.

What are the covers made of?

The Vela chair fabric is 100% polyester. Polyester is flexible, resists fading and holds its shape well. The seat cushions are built on foam and fiber fill, and the Vela and Ushi chair fabrics are CA TB-117 compliant, a flammability standard for upholstered furniture.

How to wash dining chair covers

  • Follow the label. Use the care instructions on the cover for the water temperature and cycle.
  • Avoid bleach and fabric softener, which can affect the texture and the performance of the fabric.
  • Spot test first. Test any new cleaning product on a hidden area before you use it.
  • Do not wash too aggressively or too often. Repeated aggressive washing can reduce the long-term performance of treated fabrics such as Aquaforte.

This is general care advice. The care label and the product page for your chair always take priority.

Dealing with spills between washes

Blot the spill from the outside in, using minimal moisture so that it does not soak into the cushion. Avoid heat, which can set some stains, and avoid scrubbing, which can damage the fibers and make the mark more noticeable.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Vela and Ushi chairs have removable, machine-washable covers. On the Vela, the seat and back cushion covers come off; on the Ushi, the cover is removable. Our dining pages also describe water-resistant Aquaforte among the fabric options. For the Aurbit and Orsa chairs, check the product page for the cover details of each chair. Before washing, follow the care label on the cover for the water temperature and cycle, because the label and the product page always take priority over general advice.

Yes. Replacement covers are sold separately for the Vela dining chair, the Aurbit dining chair and the Vela bench. A replacement cover can freshen the chair later without replacing the whole piece, which is especially useful in homes with children or pets. A chair with a fixed, upholstered seat is harder to clean once food or drink soaks in, so removable covers also give you another option when a stain does not come out. Check the product page for the cover that fits your chair.

The Vela chair fabric is 100% polyester, which is flexible, resists fading and holds its shape well. The seat cushions are built on foam and fiber fill, and the Vela and Ushi chair fabrics are CA TB-117 compliant, a flammability standard for upholstered furniture. Check the product page for the fabric of the chair you choose.

Avoid both. Bleach and fabric softener can affect the texture and the performance of the fabric, including treated fabrics such as Aquaforte. Follow the care label for the water temperature and cycle, test any new cleaning product on a hidden area first, and do not wash too aggressively or too often, because repeated aggressive washing can reduce the long-term performance of treated fabrics. This is general care advice, and the care label and the product page for your chair always take priority.

Blot the spill from the outside in, using minimal moisture so it does not soak into the cushion. Avoid heat, which can set some stains, and avoid scrubbing, which can damage the fibers and make the mark more noticeable. Spot test any cleaner on a hidden area before you use it. If the cover is removable, as on the Vela and Ushi chairs, you can then wash it following the care label. This is general care advice, and the care label always takes priority.

The Vela and Ushi chair fabrics are CA TB-117 compliant, a flammability standard for upholstered furniture. The chairs are also tested to the ANSI/BIFMA X5.4 (seating) residential safety standard. These are standards for the materials and the seating itself, not a guide to care, so follow the care label on the cover for washing. Check the product page for the current compliance details of the chair you choose, since specifications can change.
