How Big a Dining Table Do You Need? Size, Seating and Clearance Guide

How to match a table to your room, your household and the way you host, using the real measurements of our Vela, Ushi and Orsa tables.

A Cozey Ushi dining table with its extension leaf in place

Short answer: Choose the table that leaves comfortable room to walk and pull out chairs when it is fully extended, not only when it is closed. Our rectangular tables measure 62.0 inches closed and 77.8 inches extended (Vela and Ushi), or 65.7 inches closed and 84.0 inches extended (Orsa).

We describe our extendable tables as growing to host groups of 6 to 8. The right choice depends on how often you entertain, how much space surrounds the table and whether the room doubles as a walkway.

Start with the room, not the table

Measure the length and width of the space the table will sit in, then measure the distance from where the table will stand to every wall, door and piece of furniture around it. A common planning guideline is to leave about 36 inches between the table edge and the nearest wall or furniture so that someone can walk behind a seated person. This is general layout advice rather than a product specification, so adjust it for your own home.

Measure with the extension in place if you plan to use it. A table that fits closed but blocks a doorway when extended will frustrate you at the moments you most want it to work.

The extension adds about 15.7 inches to Vela and Ushi and 18.3 inches to Orsa.

How much length do you need per person?

A widely used guideline is about 24 inches of table edge per diner. By that guideline, 62 inches of Vela or Ushi suits a smaller group and the extended 77.8 inches suits a larger one. Treat the number as a starting point: wider chairs, centerpieces and shared dishes all change how comfortable a table feels.

Check the chair widths as well. The Ushi chair is about 20.6 inches wide, the Vela chair 20.9 inches, the Aurbit chair 20.4 inches and the Orsa chair 17.9 inches, so the narrower Orsa chair leaves more elbow room along the same length.

Closed or extended: how to plan for both

Plan the room for the table's everyday size, then confirm that the extended size still works for the occasional large gathering. If the extended table would block a path, check whether you can pull the table away from a wall or open the nearby door before you rely on the extra length.

  • Everyday use: use the closed dimensions to decide how much floor space the table permanently occupies.
  • Hosting: use the extended length to check walkways, sideboards and doors.
  • Moving the table: the extension is a separate leaf, so you can store it when you are not using it.

Legroom and clearance under the table

Our tables have a clear height under the stretcher or frame of about 26 inches: 26.0 inches under the Vela and Ushi stretcher and 26.1 inches of clearance under the Orsa. Chair seat heights are close to 18 inches, which leaves room for knees under a table that is about 30 inches high.

Choosing between Vela, Ushi and Orsa

  • Vela and Ushi: the same table footprint, a good fit for most dining rooms and for open-plan layouts where the table sits against a wall for everyday use.
  • Orsa: our longest and widest dining table, for larger rooms and households that host often.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our extendable dining tables are designed to host groups of 6 to 8. How comfortably they seat that number depends on the table you choose, the chairs you pair with it and how much elbow room you like. As a rough planning guide, a common rule is about 24 inches of table edge per person; this is general advice, not a product specification. The extended lengths give you the room to work with: 77.8 inches for the Vela and Ushi and 84.0 inches for the Orsa.

A common guideline is about 36 inches between the table edge and the nearest wall or furniture, measured with the extension in place if you plan to use it. That leaves room to pull out a chair and still walk behind a seated guest. It is general planning advice, not a product specification, so allow more if the table sits in a main walkway or near a door. Measure the extended table, not only the closed one: the Orsa reaches 84.0 inches and the Vela and Ushi 77.8 inches.

The extended lengths are 77.8 inches for the Vela and Ushi and 84.0 inches for the Orsa. Closed, the Vela and Ushi measure 62.0 by 38.6 inches and the Orsa 65.7 by 41.9 inches. The extension is a separate leaf, so the longer size is there for hosting and you can store the leaf the rest of the time. Check the product page for the table you choose, since specifications can change.

The Vela and Ushi are our most compact dining tables, at 62.0 by 38.6 inches closed, and they only grow to 77.8 inches when you add the extension. Keep the extension stored for everyday use and add it only when you host. Pair a compact table with a narrow chair to keep the room open: the Orsa chair is our narrowest at 17.9 inches wide, and the Aurbit chair is our lowest at 27.9 inches overall. If you have more room and host often, the Orsa is larger, at 65.7 by 41.9 inches closed.

Vela and Ushi are 30.2 inches high, and the Orsa is 30.4 inches high. Clearance under the frame matters as much as tabletop height: there is 26.0 inches under the Vela and Ushi stretcher and 26.1 inches under the Orsa. Our dining chairs have seat heights of 18.0 to 19.0 inches, which leaves room for knees under a table of this height. Counter and bar stools are made for taller surfaces, so use dining chairs or a bench at a standard dining table.

Yes. The extension is a separate leaf, so you can use the table closed every day and add the leaf only when you host. Plan the room for the closed size first, then confirm that the extended size still clears walkways, sideboards and doors for the occasional large gathering. If the extended table would block a path, check whether you can pull the table away from a wall or open the nearby door before you rely on the extra length. Check the product page for what is included with the table you choose.
