The Best Mattress for a Low-Profile or Platform Bed

What changes when the bed sits low, how our two mattresses compare on a platform frame, and the slat and box spring checks to make before you buy.

A Cozey Ara platform bed

Short answer: The most comfortable mattress for a low-profile bed is the one that matches how you sleep without adding height you do not want. Our Cozey Foam Mattress is 10 inches tall and keeps a low bed low. Our Cozey Hybrid Mattress is 12 inches tall, with more bounce and a firmer edge. You do not need a box spring on a platform bed such as our Ara, because the slats already do that job.

On a low frame the mattress is most of what you see and most of what sets the height of the bed. A few inches change how easy it is to get in and out, how much of the headboard shows and whether the base can hold the mattress properly. The sections below cover each of those in turn.

What does a low-profile bed change?

A low-profile or platform bed has a flat, slatted or solid surface built in, so there is no box spring under the mattress. The total height of the bed is the frame plus the mattress, which makes the mattress the part you can choose.

Three things change on a low bed:

  • Sleeping height: a thinner mattress keeps the bed closer to the floor. As general advice, a lower bed suits people who like to step on and off easily, and a taller one suits people who prefer to sit higher.
  • Headboard show: a thick mattress covers more of the headboard. Our Ara headboards are about 35 inches tall for Round and Square, 36.6 inches for Pillow and 40 inches for Extended.
  • Support under the mattress: with no box spring, the slats carry the load, so their width and spacing matter.

Our Ara frame has a mattress space 4.9 inches deep, measured from the top of the slats to the top of the side panel. The Foam Mattress therefore rises roughly 5.1 inches above the panel, and the Hybrid roughly 7.1 inches.

How thick should the mattress be on a platform bed?

Choose a thickness that suits the frame and the look you want. For our Ara bed, we recommend a mattress of about 9 inches or more for balanced proportions, and mattresses up to 16 inches are compatible. Both of our mattresses sit inside that range, so neither one is too thin or too thick for Ara. Our guide to Ara and your mattress explains the thickness range in full.

For any other low frame, the right thickness is the one that frame allows. Check the frame's own instructions before you buy.

Foam or hybrid on a low bed?

Both mattresses are medium-firm and share the same 2 inch Serene comfort layer, so the difference comes from height and the core. Our foam and hybrid mattress guide covers every detail. This table covers what matters on a low frame.

Both are rated for up to 250 lb per sleeper. The Hybrid needs fitted sheets with pockets of at least 12 inches.

What should the slats and base look like?

Without a box spring, the slats have to do the supporting. Our mattresses work on a solid platform, on a slatted base, or on a solid non-flexing foundation. Wire grid and coiled box springs are not compatible. Queen and King sizes need at least one center support beam.

What should the slats and base look like?

What to checkWhat we look forOur Ara bed
Slat widthAt least 2 inches3 inches
Gap between slatsNo wider than 3 inchesAbout 2.2 inches on Queen and King, 2.6 inches on Full
Slat materialSolid and not flexing15 mm laminated veneer lumber (LVL) on a black powder-coated steel frame
LoadMattress plus sleepers within the frame limit600 lb Full, 800 lb Queen, 900 lb King, combined

The Ara load limit counts the mattress and everyone on it together, so add the mattress weight to the sleepers before you compare. For a frame from another maker, ask for the slat width and gap before you order. Our guide to choosing a bed frame compares platform, storage and panel beds.

Do you need a box spring with a platform bed?

No. A platform bed carries the mattress on its own surface, and a box spring would only add height. On our Ara, the mattress rests directly on the supplied slats, and we do not recommend adding a box spring. Ara is also not designed for an adjustable electric base. Our guide to box springs and platform beds goes through the details, including warranty questions.

Our recommendation

Pick the mattress for the way you sleep, then check the base.

  • The lowest bed: the Cozey Foam Mattress at 10 inches.
  • More bounce or a hot sleeper: the Cozey Hybrid Mattress at 12 inches.
  • A shared bed with a restless partner: the Foam Mattress, which absorbs the most motion.
  • Sitting on the edge of the bed: the Hybrid, with its foam rail.
  • Our Ara bed: use the supplied slats, with no box spring.
  • Another platform bed: confirm slats at least 2 inches wide, gaps no wider than 3 inches and center support in Queen and King.

You can compare both mattresses on our mattress page and pair either one with the Ara bed.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on how you sleep, because comfort comes from the mattress layers and not from the height of the frame. Both of our mattresses are medium-firm and use the same 2 inch comfort layer. The Cozey Foam Mattress, at 10 inches, gives a close, cradling feel with very little motion transfer, so it suits side and back sleepers and couples. The Cozey Hybrid Mattress, at 12 inches, adds bounce, airflow and a firmer edge. Both are rated for up to 250 lb per sleeper.

Use the thickness your frame allows and the height you want to sleep at. On our Ara bed, we recommend about 9 inches or more so the mattress looks balanced against the frame, and mattresses up to 16 inches are compatible. Our Foam Mattress is 10 inches and our Hybrid is 12 inches, so both fit comfortably. A thicker mattress raises the sleeping surface and hides more of the headboard, so choose the lower option if you want a lower bed.

No. A platform bed has a solid or slatted surface built in, which does the job a box spring does on a traditional frame. Our Ara bed comes with its own steel frame and slats, and the mattress rests directly on them. We do not recommend adding a box spring, because it raises the bed and changes the proportions of the headboard. For another platform bed, follow that frame's instructions. Wire grid and coiled box springs are not compatible with our mattresses.

For our mattresses, slats should be at least 2 inches wide, with gaps no wider than 3 inches. Queen and King sizes also need at least one center support beam in the base. Our Ara bed meets this with 3 inch wide slats spaced about 2.2 inches apart on Queen and King and 2.6 inches apart on Full. If you are buying a frame from another maker, ask for the slat width and gap before you order, because wider gaps leave the mattress unsupported between slats.

Neither is better in every case. The foam mattress is the lower choice at 10 inches, and it absorbs the most motion, so it suits a bed shared with a restless sleeper. The hybrid is 12 inches, with pocket coils that give more bounce and airflow and a foam rail that keeps the edge firm. If you sleep hot, change positions often or sit on the side of the bed, choose the hybrid. If you want the lowest bed and a cradled feel, choose the foam mattress.

It can raise the sleeping surface by two inches when you choose the Hybrid over the Foam Mattress. On our Ara frame, which has a mattress space 4.9 inches deep, the Foam Mattress rises roughly 5.1 inches above the side panel and the Hybrid roughly 7.1 inches. A taller mattress also covers more of the headboard. If you want the lowest bed, choose the Foam Mattress, and try an Extended headboard at about 40 inches if you want more of it to show.

We do. Our Ara storage bed is a platform bed with four drawers, two on each side, that roll out from the sides so you can reach your bedding without lifting the mattress. It comes in Full, Queen and King, and the storage version supports the same combined load as the regular frame. Both of our mattresses sit directly on its slats. Leave room beside the bed to open the drawers, especially if a nightstand sits close. Our Ara storage guide lists the drawer dimensions and clearances.
