Short answer: For our Ara bed, no. It comes with its own steel frame and slats, which our page describes as a stable foundation for your mattress, and the page does not call for a box spring. For another platform bed, follow the instructions for that frame and for your mattress, because our product pages do not list a foundation rule.
A platform bed has a solid or slatted surface built in, so it does the job a box spring does on a traditional frame. Our mattress pages describe the mattress itself, including its type, height, feel, trial and warranty, and they do not list a foundation requirement. The sections below explain what we can say.

What does a platform base do?
A platform bed has a flat, solid or slatted surface that supports the mattress by itself. It replaces the box spring, which removes a second layer and lowers the sleeping surface. Our guide to choosing a bed frame compares platform, storage and panel beds in more detail.
- Solid platform: one continuous surface.
- Slatted platform: boards with spaces between them.
- Low profile: because there is no box spring, the bed sits closer to the floor.
Panel beds are different, so check the frame instructions to see what base the frame expects.
What do our pages say about the base under a mattress?
Our mattress pages do not list foundation, slat or box spring requirements, and neither does our warranty page. Our warranty page describes a 5-year limited warranty that covers manufacturer defects not linked to customer modifications. Because we do not state a base rule, we cannot promise coverage for a particular base, so read the current terms on our warranty page and ask our team if you have a specific base in mind. If you buy a mattress from another maker, read its own instructions and warranty, because each maker sets its own rules.
When might you still use a box spring?
That depends on the frame and the mattress, so follow the instructions for each. Our pages do not describe using a box spring with a Cozey frame.
Our Ara bed comes with its own steel frame and slats, and our page describes them as a stable foundation for your mattress. The page does not call for a box spring. We do not state adjustable-base compatibility for Ara or for our mattress, so ask our team before you pair them. Our guide to Ara and your mattress covers the details.
How do our Ara bed and mattress fit together?
Ara uses a black powder-coated steel frame and 15 mm laminated veneer lumber (LVL) slats, spaced about 2.2 inches apart on Queen and King, which our page describes as a stable foundation for your mattress. The page lists the frame for mattresses of 54 x 75 inches, 60 x 80 inches and 76 x 80 inches. It does not call for a box spring.
How do our Ara bed and mattress fit together?
| Mattress | Height | Feel |
|---|---|---|
| Cozey Foam Mattress | 10 inches | Medium-firm, with a close, motion-absorbing feel |
Our Ara page states the following maximum load for each size:
How do our Ara bed and mattress fit together?
| Ara size | Maximum load |
|---|---|
| Full | 600 lb |
| Queen | 800 lb |
| King | 900 lb |
Our mattress guide explains how mattress types compare, and you can see our mattress on its product page.
What is the most comfortable mattress for a low-profile bed?
Comfort depends on how you sleep more than on the height of the bed. Our Cozey Foam Mattress is medium-firm, with a 2-inch Serene comfort foam layer over transition and support foam, and it is the lower profile choice at 10 inches.
- Side and back sleepers: the comfort layer takes pressure off the shoulders and hips while the base layers keep the lower back supported.
- Couples: the foam construction gives a close, motion-absorbing feel, so a partner getting up is less noticeable.
- Low beds: a 10 inch mattress keeps the whole bed lower, which some people find easier for getting in and out.
If you are a heavier sleeper, check the mattress page before you choose.
What about platform beds with storage drawers?
A storage platform bed uses the space under the mattress for drawers. Our Ara storage bed has four drawers, two on each side, that roll out from the sides, so you do not have to lift the mattress.
Leave room beside the bed to open the drawers, especially if a nightstand sits close to the frame. Our guide to Ara bed storage lists the drawer dimensions and clearances.
Can you assemble a platform bed alone?
Often you can, if the frame is designed for it. The main frame of the Ara is tool-free, so there is no drill or screwdriver for that part, and it ships in separate boxes. On a Queen without storage, the heaviest box is the side panels at 45.4 lb.
The panels and headboard are easier with a second person to hold them steady, particularly in King. If you are building alone, clear the floor first, open one box at a time and add the panels and headboard last. Our guide to the easiest bed frames to assemble solo has more tips.
Our recommendation
Choose the base to match your mattress, then the mattress to match how you sleep.
- Another platform bed: follow the instructions for that frame and for your mattress.
- Our Ara bed: use the supplied steel frame and slats; our page does not call for a box spring.
- A lower bed and a motion-absorbing feel: the Cozey Foam Mattress at 10 inches.
- Storage: the Ara storage bed, with four side-access drawers.
- A mattress from another maker: check its foundation rules before you buy a frame.
