Short answer: A wool rug can last a very long time when it is looked after, but it is hard to clean at home and slow to dry. A washable rug trades some of that long-term character for easy care: our washable rug layer goes in the machine, and we tested our latest construction through 15 wash cycles. We do not claim a Cozey rug will outlast wool, so the better choice depends on whether you value easy cleaning or a rug that ages in place.
Rugs take more wear than almost any other item in a room, so the way they are cleaned and dried matters as much as the way they look. Below we compare the two on the questions people ask most: how durable they are, how they hold up over time and which one dries fastest.

How do washable rugs and wool rugs compare at a glance?
The wool column describes wool rugs in general, because construction varies from one rug to the next. The Cozey column describes our own washable rug: a polyester chenille layer with a separate cushioned modular pad that slides into pockets on the rug.
How do washable rugs and wool rugs compare at a glance?
| Our washable rug | Wool rug (general) | |
|---|---|---|
| Cleaning | Slide the pad out of the pockets and machine wash the chenille layer, cold and on a delicate cycle | Usually vacuumed, spot cleaned or sent to a professional cleaner |
| Spills and stains | The rug layer has a PFAS-free, C0 stain-resistant treatment that helps fresh spills bead on the surface; blot and wash | Wool is naturally resistant to some soiling, but a spill that soaks in can be hard to lift |
| Shedding and pilling | In our experience the tight chenille does not show noticeable pilling or shedding; a claw can still catch a thread | New wool rugs often shed loose fibres for a while, and some pilling is normal |
| Feel underfoot | Soft chenille at approximately 8.5 mm (0.33 inches), plus a cushioned pad | Warm, springy and dense, with a natural texture |
| Drying | Tumble dry on low heat or air dry | Slow to dry, and water can cause shrinking or felting |
| Long-term wear | We tested 15 wash cycles; we do not promise a lifespan | Can last a long time and develop a patina when cared for |
Are washable rugs as durable as wool?
It depends on what you mean by durable. A well-made wool rug is resilient, and with good care it can stay in use for a very long time. Our best washable rugs guide is candid about this: a washable synthetic rug will not develop the same patina or character as a hand-knotted wool rug.
Where a washable rug is strong is in recovery. Wool needs gentle handling because water, heat and agitation can shrink and felt it, which is why we say in our guide to machine washing a rug that wool should not go in the machine unless its label says so. A rug that can be washed whenever it needs it is easier to bring back after a muddy week.
Our rug layer is polyester chenille with a polyester backing, and it is OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified. We also changed the edge stitching to stand up to repeated washing. None of this amounts to a lifespan claim, and we have not compared our rug with wool in a laboratory.
How do washable rugs hold up over time?
We tested our latest rug construction through 15 wash cycles, designed to simulate washing once a year for 15 years. We saw only minor colour fading, good edge and corner flatness, and some possible shrinkage. That is a test result, not a promise that a rug will last 15 years.
A few habits help any washable rug keep its look:
- Wash cold and gentle. Our product page asks for a delicate cycle in cold water with a detergent that does not contain bleach or fabric softener.
- Dry with low heat or in the air. High heat can change the fabric's size and appearance.
- Vacuum with care. We do not recommend a beater bar, but you can still vacuum the rug. Avoid the edges.
- Expect some change. The stain-resistant treatment can become less effective after repeated washing, although the rug stays machine washable, and strong sunlight can gradually change colour.
- Trim, do not pull. A pet's claw can catch a thread. Cut a loose thread rather than tugging it.
Our full routine is in the guide to cleaning and maintaining your washable rug. Our rugs also carry a five-year limited warranty for eligible manufacturing defects, subject to the applicable terms: see our warranty.
Which dries fastest?
In general, a synthetic rug dries faster than a wool rug. Synthetic fibres hold less moisture, while wool absorbs water and holds on to it, so a wet wool rug needs a long time to dry fully and should not be left damp. Drying a large wool rug properly is usually a job for a professional.
Our chenille layer is synthetic and can go in the dryer on low heat or dry in the air, hanging or flat. Our rugs share one construction across all designs and sizes, so no design dries faster than another, but a smaller rug has less fabric to dry. We have not published drying times, so we do not give an hours figure. For the full steps, see our guide to washing a rug.
What about size, washing machines and the pad?
Washing is only easy if the rug fits your machine. These are our sizes, and what each needs:
What about size, washing machines and the pad?
| Our rug size | Machine we recommend |
|---|---|
| 76 x 244 cm (2.5' x 8') runner | Standard home washing machine |
| 91 x 152 cm (3' x 5') | Standard home washing machine |
| 152 x 244 cm (5' x 8') | Standard home washing machine |
| 244 x 305 cm (8' x 10') | Large home washer, at least 127 litres (4.5 cu. ft.), without a central agitator |
| 274 x 366 cm (9' x 12') | Commercial washer with a capacity of 27 to 36 kg (60 to 80 lb), such as one at a laundrette |
Every rug includes a cushioned, non-slip modular pad with an EVA cushioning core and TPR grip material. The rug layer and pad together measure approximately 13 mm (0.51 inches). The pad slides into the pockets on the rug. It is spot clean only and stays out of the washer. We have no formal slip-resistance rating, so we make no promise that the rug will never move. A wool rug is often used with a separate rug pad that is bought on its own.
Our recommendation
Choose by how you live, not by a single label.
- Pets, kids, entryways and busy living rooms: a washable rug, because you can wash the whole surface rather than treat one spot at a time. See our guide to washable rugs for pets and kids.
- A quiet room you want to keep for years: a wool rug can suit it, if you are happy to vacuum, spot clean and use a professional cleaner.
- A small laundry space: pick a 152 x 244 cm (5' x 8') rug or smaller so the rug fits a standard home machine.
- Not sure of the size: start with our room-by-room rug size guide, then see how to layer washable rugs or what to know about washable rugs on hardwood.
