Short answer: Oak and walnut both work with a light-coloured sofa, and the choice sets the mood. Oak keeps the room airy and low in contrast, walnut adds depth so a pale sofa does not blend into the room, and black wood or a steel accent adds a sharper contrast. Whichever you pick, repeat one timber across the coffee table, side table and chair legs so the room looks planned.
A light sofa is a quiet backdrop, so the table sets the tone. Below we go through each finish on our site, how to match timber tones and how to mix timbers and metals. For the whole palette, see our neutral palette guide.

Which table finishes work with a light-coloured sofa?
Four finishes cover our tables: oak, walnut, black wood and steel colours. Our timber tables are made of ash veneer or ash timber in an oak or walnut finish, so ash is the material, not a separate finish.
Which table finishes work with a light-coloured sofa?
| Finish | Where we offer it | Next to a light sofa |
|---|---|---|
| Oak | Tessella, Eclipse, Arca, Ombra, Mensa and Stella | The lighter timber: keeps the room airy and low in contrast |
| Walnut | The same six tables | The warmer, deeper timber: gives a pale sofa something to stand out against |
| Black wood | Mensa coffee and side tables only | The strongest contrast, with a graphic look |
| Steel colours | Solis side table | One small accent in a colour such as Wave, Dandelion, Thyme, Mushroom or Solstice |
Finishes can change, so check the product page before you order.
Dove is a paler finish that we offer on storage rather than tables: our Themis shelves and cabinets. If your shelving is Dove, a timber coffee table adds warmth in front of it.
Oak or walnut with a cream sofa?
Either works, so choose by what you want the table to do. Oak is the lighter timber and keeps a cream or off-white sofa calm and bright. Walnut is the deeper timber, and it makes a pale sofa the centre of the room. As general advice, check your floor first: a table close to the floor tone can disappear.
The table pairs our light sofa colours with a finish to try first. These are design suggestions, not statements about fabric undertones, so compare a free fabric swatch with the timber photos on the product page.
Oak or walnut with a cream sofa?
| Light sofa colour (fabric) | Our sofas | A finish to try first |
|---|---|---|
| Snowdrift, Sesame (Aquaforte) | Ciello, Gaia, Neptune; Sesame also on Orian | Oak for an airy room, or Mensa in black wood for contrast |
| Silken Sand, Flax Haven (Performance Natural Weave) | Gaia | Walnut: these are light warm neutrals, and walnut shares the warmth |
| Sunset Beige (Performance Plain Weave) | Ciello | Walnut for depth, oak to stay soft |
| Parchment (Performance Textured Weave) | Atmosphere, Orian | Oak: the Naos chair in Parchment is paired with oak on its page |
| Limestone (Aquaforte), a mid cool grey | Ciello, Gaia, Neptune | Oak, to keep a cool room open |
| Frost (Performance Chenille) | Atmosphere and Cassini | Either; we have not published a shade description, so judge on a swatch |
Each collection offers a different set of colours, so check the sofa page before you plan around a pairing.
How do I match timber tones?
Pick one lead timber and repeat it. These rules are general design advice.
- Repeat one timber on three pieces: the coffee table, a side table and the chair legs. Our Vela comes in oak or walnut, and each fabric on the Naos is paired with one timber on its page, such as Parchment & Oak or Mocha & Walnut.
- Carry it into storage: Altitude, Themis and Aurora also come in oak and walnut, so a media wall can match the table.
- Compare materials, not only names: Tessella, Eclipse, Arca, Mensa and Ombra are ash veneer or ash timber, while the Stella is MDF with a melamine finish. Put the product photos side by side before you combine them.
- Use two timbers at most: if you mix oak and walnut, make the difference obvious and keep the second timber to one small piece, rather than two tones that almost match.
Our coffee table guide covers size and height, and our guide to pairing a sofa, chair and coffee table shows the same finish idea across a whole group.
Can I mix timbers and metals?
Yes, and the simplest rule is to repeat every accent at least twice. Black appears on our Mensa in black wood and on the black powder-coated steel frame of the Mira chair, which has walnut-coloured ash arms. The Solis comes in several steel colours: use one as a single accent rather than a theme. Our side table guide compares the tables beside the sofa.
Our recommendation
- Airy and calm: Snowdrift, Sesame or Parchment with an oak Eclipse or Tessella.
- Warm and deeper: Silken Sand, Flax Haven or Sunset Beige with a walnut Tessella or Mensa.
- Graphic: Snowdrift or Sesame with a Mensa in black wood, and a Mira chair to repeat the black.
- A touch of colour: an oak or walnut coffee table with a Solis in one steel colour beside the sofa.
- Not sure: order free fabric swatches, then compare them with the timber photos on the product page and your floor in daylight. Our sofa colour guide helps you choose the shade itself.
