Minimalist Living Room: How to Keep It Calm and Still Comfortable

A practical guide to the pieces, storage, colours and materials that make a minimalist lounge room feel calm without feeling bare.

A minimalist Cozey living room

Short answer: A minimalist lounge room needs fewer pieces, not less comfort. Start with a sofa, one coffee table and one closed storage piece, add a single chair if the room allows, and keep to two or three quiet shades plus one timber tone. Closed storage such as our Aurora credenza keeps surfaces clear, and a deep, supportive sofa such as our Atmosphere or Ciello keeps the room comfortable to live in.

Minimalism goes wrong when the room looks calm but nobody wants to sit in it. The sections below show which of our pieces suit a pared-back room, with exact sizes, so you can plan a space that stays tidy and still works day to day.

What makes a lounge room minimalist, and how many pieces does it need?

A minimalist room removes visual noise. Three habits do most of the work: fewer large pieces, closed storage so surfaces stay clear, and a narrow palette where texture and timber grain bring the warmth.

As general advice, not a product specification, four main pieces are a good starting point:

  • A sofa sized to your wall and to the number of people you host most often.
  • One coffee table. Skip side tables until you know you need them.
  • One closed storage piece for media equipment, throws, games and anything else you would rather not see.
  • One chair, if there is room. A single chair adds a second place to sit without crowding the walkway.

A rug and a lamp finish the room, and you can choose them after the large pieces. If you are unsure how many seats to start with, our guide to how many modules you need walks through it.

Which sofa suits a minimalist lounge room?

In a minimalist room the sofa is the centrepiece, so choose it for its shape, its colour and how well it holds its look. Our sofas are modular, so you can buy only the seats you need today and add more later.

Pale, quiet colours suit minimalism. On the Atmosphere, Parchment is a Performance Textured Weave rated at 54,000 Martindale rubs. On the Ciello, Snowdrift and Sesame are Aquaforte, rated at 78,000 Martindale rubs. Light shades show marks sooner, which is general advice rather than a product specification, so plan a little more cleaning in a busy home. Our guide to Ciello explains the fabrics and covers.

If you prefer a tidy look with little upkeep, the Atmosphere is the easier choice, because its seat and back cushions are built into the modules and you press and smooth them. The Ciello is softer and deeper to sink into, but its loose cushions need regular fluffing to stay neat.

Which storage keeps surfaces clear?

Closed storage is one of the most useful changes in a minimalist room. Doors hide cables, consoles, games and blankets, so the wall stays calm. Open shelves look light but show everything on them.

Which storage keeps surfaces clear?

PieceSize (W x D x H)DoorsFinishes
Aurora credenza81.5 x 38.2 x 47 cm (32.1 x 15.0 x 18.5 in) per unit. Two units: 163 cm (64.2 in). Three units: 244.5 cm (96.3 in)Push-to-open, no handles. Four door styles: Solid, Slat, Chevron and RattanOak, walnut
Stella media unit57 x 40 x 40 cm (22.4 x 15.7 x 15.7 in) with door. 57 x 38 x 40 cm (22.4 x 15.0 x 15.7 in) withoutOne door, or openOak, walnut
Altitude storage cabinet81.5 x 24 x 25 cm (32.1 x 9.4 x 9.8 in)Two doors, magnetic push latchOak, walnut

Here is how to choose between them:

  • Aurora suits a longer wall. You can join one, two or three units, and we describe it as a credenza with clean lines.
  • Stella suits a small wall, or a spot beside a larger piece. It works as a single unit that you can expand by adding more units, and it ships flat. Check your TV width against its 57 cm (22.4 inches) before ordering.
  • Altitude cabinet is not a TV stand. It slides between two Altitude shelves, so you can hide everyday items while the shelves around it stay open for a few chosen objects. Our shelving collection shows how the shelves fit together.

For a fuller comparison, read our guide to choosing a credenza or media unit.

Tables and chairs: fewer pieces, simpler shapes

One coffee table is enough in most minimalist rooms, and a clean outline matters more than size. All three tables below come in oak and walnut.

  • Tessella coffee table: 171.7 x 68.7 cm (67.6 x 27.0 inches) and 40.7 cm (16.0 inches) high. It is a long, low rectangle with a recessed centre for small items, and we describe it as a modern table with minimalist design. It is 15 mm MDF with an ash timber veneer.
  • Eclipse coffee table: round, 80 cm (31.5 inches) across and 39 cm (15.4 inches) high. With no corners it is easy to walk around, and its two half-circle tops can be arranged to give open or hidden storage.
  • Arca coffee table: 110 cm (43.3 inches) long and 35 cm (13.8 inches) high. The curved version has hidden storage and the fluted version has open storage.

For seating beyond the sofa, one chair is enough. Our Naos lounge chair is 81 cm (31.9 inches) wide, 80.5 cm (31.7 inches) deep and 76.5 cm (30.1 inches) high, with ash timber arms and legs. The Parchment and Oak version is Performance Textured Weave at 54,000 Martindale rubs. Its covers are not removable. Our accent chair guide can help you decide whether a chair suits your room.

Leave room to move. As general advice, not a product specification, keep walking paths at least 76 cm (30 inches) wide, make them 91 cm (36 inches) if you want them to feel comfortable, and leave 36 to 46 cm (14 to 18 inches) between the sofa and the coffee table. Our coffee table guide goes into table sizing in more detail.

Colour, timber and texture: how to stay calm without going cold

A minimalist room can feel flat if everything is the same shade and surface. The fix is texture, not more objects.

  • Two or three shades. Pick a base such as soft white, sand or light grey, and add one deeper tone.
  • One timber. Repeat oak or walnut across the coffee table, storage and chair legs so the room looks planned. Our coffee tables and our Aurora credenza come in both.
  • One textured piece. A textured weave sofa, or the Naos in Parchment, gives a pale room depth without clutter.
  • The rug last. A plain, low-contrast rug grounds the room. Our washable rugs are machine washable, and each rug page shows its shade and pattern.

Our guide to neutral living room colour palettes shows which sofa colours pair with which timbers.

Our recommendation

  • A small room: a two-seater Atmosphere with round arms, one Eclipse or Tessella coffee table, and a Stella media unit with a door.
  • A longer wall: an Aurora credenza in two or three units, with a single table in front of the sofa.
  • Guests stay over: an Orian, so the sofa is also the guest bed and no separate bed takes up floor space.
  • A softer look: a Ciello in Snowdrift or Sesame, with an Eclipse table to avoid hard corners.
  • A little display: Altitude shelves with one cabinet, so most items are hidden and a few are shown.

Frequently Asked Questions

We sell a range of pieces with simple outlines, light timber tones and closed storage. Our Tessella coffee table is described on its page as a modern table with minimalist design, and our Aurora credenza as a credenza with clean lines. Our Atmosphere sofa with a square back gives a structured look, and our coffee tables and Aurora credenza come in oak and walnut. Start with the living room storage, coffee tables and sofas pages, then choose one finish and repeat it across the room.

As general advice, four main pieces are a sound starting point: a sofa, one coffee table, one closed storage piece and one chair if there is room. A rug and a lamp complete the room. What matters more than the number is that each piece does a job. A storage ottoman can replace a side table, and an Eclipse or Arca coffee table can hide small items inside. Add pieces slowly and remove anything you do not use.

The Atmosphere with a square back is the cleanest and most structured. Its two-seater with two arms is 206 cm (81.1 inches) wide, the seat is 70 cm (27.3 inches) deep and the seating is medium-firm. The round back is softer and 10 cm (3.9 inches) narrower. The Ciello is softer and deeper to sink into, but its loose cushions need fluffing every week or two to stay tidy. If the sofa must also be a guest bed, the Orian is the compact choice, and it opens to about 202.5 cm (80 inches) from the back of the sofa.

Closed storage suits it well, because doors hide the items that otherwise sit on the surface. Our Aurora credenza has push-to-open doors with no handles, in 81.5 cm (32.1 inch) wide units that you can join in twos or threes, and its doors come in solid, rattan, slat and chevron styles. The Stella media unit is a compact option at 57 cm (22.4 inches) wide, and you can choose it with or without a door. Use open shelves sparingly, for a few objects you like. Our Altitude cabinet slides between Altitude shelves, which lets you mix closed and open storage on one wall.

Yes, and the sofa is where comfort should come from. A minimalist room has fewer pieces, so each one has to be good to sit in. Our Atmosphere has a 70 cm (27.3 inch) square-back seat depth and medium-firm seating, and our Ciello is one of our softest sofas, with a Regular seat 79 cm (31 inches) wide and 55 cm (21.7 inches) deep. Add warmth with texture rather than objects: a textured weave cover, a timber coffee table and a washable rug. A single lounge chair gives a second place to sit without crowding the room.

Soft, low-contrast colours work well, with one timber tone repeated through the room. On the Atmosphere, Parchment is a Performance Textured Weave rated at 54,000 Martindale rubs. On the Ciello, Snowdrift and Sesame are Aquaforte at 78,000 Martindale rubs. Light colours show marks sooner, which is general advice, so choose a fabric rated for the traffic your home sees. Order free swatches to compare the colours against your floor and walls in daylight, and read our neutral palette guide for pairings with oak and walnut.

Most rooms benefit from one, because it gives you a surface within reach of the sofa. Choose a simple shape and keep it low. Our Eclipse is round at 80 cm (31.5 inches) across and 39 cm (15.4 inches) high, with two half-circle tops that can be arranged for open or hidden storage. Our Tessella is a long, low rectangle at 171.7 cm (67.6 inches), and our Arca coffee table is 110 cm (43.3 inches) long with hidden storage in the curved version. As general advice, leave 36 to 46 cm (14 to 18 inches) between the sofa and the table.
