Do You Need a Box Spring With a Platform Bed?

What a platform base does, what our pages say about the base under a mattress, and how our Ara bed and mattresses fit together.

A Cozey Ara upholstered platform bed

Short answer: For our Ara bed, no. It comes with its own steel frame and slats, which our page describes as a stable foundation for your mattress, and the page does not call for a box spring. For another platform bed, follow the instructions for that frame and for your mattress, because our product pages do not list a foundation rule.

A platform bed has a solid or slatted surface built in, so it does the job a box spring does on a traditional frame. Our mattress pages describe the mattress itself, including its type, height, feel, trial and warranty, and they do not list a foundation requirement. The sections below explain what we can say.

What does a platform base do?

A platform bed has a flat, solid or slatted surface that supports the mattress by itself. It replaces the box spring, which removes a second layer and lowers the sleeping surface. Our guide to choosing a bed frame compares platform, storage and panel beds in more detail.

  • Solid platform: one continuous surface.
  • Slatted platform: boards with spaces between them.
  • Low profile: because there is no box spring, the bed sits closer to the floor.

Panel beds are different, so check the frame instructions to see what base the frame expects.

What do our pages say about the base under a mattress?

Our mattress pages do not list foundation, slat or box spring requirements, and neither does our warranty page. Our mattress pages state a 15-year warranty on the mattress, and our product pages state a 5-year limited warranty on all of our products that covers manufacturer defects not linked to customer modifications. Because we do not state a base rule, we cannot promise coverage for a particular base, so read the current terms on our warranty page and ask our team if you have a specific base in mind. If you buy a mattress from another maker, read its own instructions and warranty, because each maker sets its own rules.

When might you still use a box spring?

That depends on the frame and the mattress, so follow the instructions for each. Our pages do not describe using a box spring with a Cozey frame.

Our Ara bed comes with its own steel frame and slats, and our page describes them as a stable foundation for your mattress. The page does not call for a box spring. We do not state adjustable-base compatibility for Ara or for our mattresses, so ask our team before you pair them. Our guide to Ara and your mattress covers the details.

How do our Ara bed and mattresses fit together?

Ara uses a black powder-coated steel frame and 15 mm laminated veneer lumber (LVL) slats, spaced about 5.7 cm (2.2 inches) apart on Queen and King, which our page describes as a stable foundation for your mattress. The page lists the frame for mattresses of 54 x 75 inches (137 x 191 cm), 60 x 80 inches (152 x 203 cm) and 76 x 80 inches (193 x 203 cm). It does not call for a box spring.

Our Ara page states the following maximum load for each size:

Ara sizeMaximum load
Full272 kg
Queen363 kg
King408 kg

Our foam and hybrid mattress guide explains how the two mattresses compare, and you can see both on our mattress page.

What is the most comfortable mattress for a low-profile bed?

Comfort depends on how you sleep more than on the height of the bed. Both of our mattresses use Serene comfort foam and are medium-firm, so the choice comes down to feel and height.

  • Foam, 10 inches (25 cm): the lower of the two. It suits side and back sleepers who like to settle into the bed, and couples who do not want to feel each other move.
  • Hybrid, 12 inches (30.5 cm): a little taller, with added bounce and edge support. It suits people who sleep hot, change positions often or sit on the edge of the bed.

On a low platform, a 10 inch mattress keeps the whole bed lower, which some people find easier for getting in and out. A 12 inch mattress raises the sleeping surface and covers a little more of the headboard. If you are a heavier sleeper, check the mattress page before you choose.

What about platform beds with storage drawers?

A storage platform bed uses the space under the mattress for drawers. Our Ara storage bed has four drawers, two on each side, that roll out from the sides, so you do not have to lift the mattress.

Leave room beside the bed to open the drawers, especially if a bedside table sits close to the frame. Our guide to Ara bed storage lists the drawer dimensions and clearances.

Can you assemble a platform bed alone?

Often you can, if the frame is designed for it. The main frame of the Ara is tool-free, so there is no drill or screwdriver for that part, and it ships in separate boxes. On a Queen without storage, the heaviest box is the side panels at 20.6 kg.

The panels and headboard are easier with a second person to hold them steady, particularly in King. If you are building alone, clear the floor first, open one box at a time and add the panels and headboard last. Our guide to the easiest bed frames to assemble solo has more tips.

Our recommendation

Choose the base to match your mattress, then the mattress to match how you sleep.

  • Another platform bed: follow the instructions for that frame and for your mattress.
  • Our Ara bed: use the supplied steel frame and slats; our page does not call for a box spring.
  • Added bounce, cooling and edge support: the Cozey Hybrid Mattress at 12 inches (30.5 cm).
  • A lower bed and a motion-absorbing feel: the Cozey Foam Mattress at 10 inches (25 cm).
  • Storage: the Ara storage bed, with four side-access drawers.
  • A mattress from another maker: check its foundation rules before you buy a frame.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not with our Ara bed. Ara comes with its own steel frame and 15 mm LVL slats, which our page describes as a stable foundation for your mattress, and the page does not call for a box spring. For another platform bed, follow the instructions for that frame and for your mattress, because our product pages do not list a foundation rule for our mattresses. A platform bed has a solid or slatted surface built in, which is the job a box spring does on a traditional frame. If you are unsure whether a base suits your mattress, ask our team before you order.

Our mattress pages state a 15-year warranty on the mattress, and our product pages state a 5-year limited warranty on all of our products that covers manufacturer defects not linked to customer modifications. Neither our product pages nor our warranty page list a foundation or box spring requirement, so we cannot promise coverage for a particular base. Read the current terms on our warranty page before you choose, and ask our team if you have a specific base in mind. For a mattress from another maker, read its own warranty, because each maker sets its own terms.

Our Ara page does not call for one. It describes the steel frame and 15 mm LVL slats as a stable foundation for your mattress, and it does not say that a box spring can or should be added. For that reason we do not recommend adding one. If a mattress maker requires a specific foundation, check that requirement before you buy Ara. For anything beyond what our Ara page states, such as a particular foundation or mattress thickness, ask our team before you order so you know it will suit your setup.

Platform frames with tool-free connections and separate, manageable boxes are the easiest for one person. The main frame of our Ara bed is tool-free and ships in separate boxes, and on a Queen without storage the heaviest box is the side panels at 20.6 kg. The panels and headboard go on more easily with a second person to steady them, especially in King. Build the base first, add the panels and headboard last, and clear the floor around you before you start so you can open one box at a time.

It depends on how you sleep. Both of our mattresses are medium-firm and use Serene comfort foam. The Cozey Foam Mattress is 10 inches (25 cm) tall, so it keeps a low bed low, and it gives a close, motion-absorbing feel that suits side and back sleepers and couples who do not want to feel each other move. The Cozey Hybrid Mattress is 12 inches (30.5 cm) tall, with added bounce and edge support. Both sit directly on an Ara bed, and you can compare them on our mattress page.

We do. Our Ara storage bed has four drawers, two on each side, that roll out from the sides, so you can reach your bedding without lifting the mattress. The frame comes in Full, Queen and King. Leave space beside the bed to open the drawers, especially if a bedside table sits close by, and check the product page for the sizes and finishes available before you order. Our Ara storage guide lists the drawer dimensions and the clearance you need.

Our product pages do not state whether Ara or our mattresses work with an adjustable base, so we cannot confirm compatibility. An adjustable base is a separate product with its own instructions, so check what the base maker requires. Because Ara is built around its own supplied slats, we do not suggest removing them. Before you pair an adjustable base with a Cozey bed or mattress, ask our team what we can confirm, and check our mattress page for the current details.
