For many Australian households, that combination is particularly valuable.
An apartment in Sydney might need a living room that doubles as a guest room. A Melbourne terrace might have narrow doorways that make delivering bulky furniture difficult. A family home in Brisbane or Perth might need occasional sleeping space without dedicating an entire room to a permanent bed.
A well-designed sofa bed can help solve all those problems.
But traditional sofa beds have often required customers to make compromises.
Some are heavy and difficult to move. Others have complicated mechanisms, uncomfortable mattresses or designs that don't look particularly attractive as everyday lounges.
At Cozey, we believe a sofa bed should do much better.
We spent 24 months developing Neptune, our first patent-pending modular sleeper system, with the goal of delivering comfortable sitting and sleeping, compact boxed delivery, tool-free assembly, an easy-to-operate mechanism, washable covers and modern design.
Today, we offer three different sleeper systems—Neptune, Orian and Atmosphere Sleeper—each created for different comfort preferences, room dimensions and styles.
Here's how to choose a great sofa bed in Australia and what we've learned from designing and engineering our own.

What Makes a Good Sofa Bed?
A sofa bed is one piece of furniture serving two different purposes.
It needs to be a comfortable lounge that looks good in your living room.
It also needs to become a supportive bed when guests stay overnight.
The best designs perform both functions well.
We recommend assessing seven things before buying.
Sitting comfort Is the seat soft or firm enough for you, and does the backrest provide the support you prefer? Sleeping comfort Is the surface sufficiently cushioned and supportive, without uncomfortable hard points? Sleeping dimensions Can the bed comfortably accommodate the intended sleepers? Ease of use Can one person open and close it without significant physical effort? Delivery and assembly Will it fit into your home, even if access is narrow or there are stairs? Practicality Are the covers washable, and is there somewhere to keep the bedding? Long-term adaptability Is the mechanism durable, and can the sofa be expanded or maintained over time?
We believe these factors should be considered together.
An attractive sofa isn't a great sofa bed if sleeping on it is uncomfortable.
And a comfortable guest bed may still be a poor purchase if it requires two people and considerable effort every time you want to open it.
Why Did Cozey Spend 24 Months Designing Its First Sofa Bed?
When we started developing Neptune, we wanted to rethink several common frustrations with traditional sofa beds.
Many were bulky and difficult to deliver, especially through narrow entrances and stairs.
Some modular alternatives still required complicated assembly or heavy mechanisms.
Others didn't provide a comfortable experience in both seated and sleeping positions.
And many sacrificed appearance for functionality.
Our goal was to solve those problems together.
We wanted a properly sized sleeping surface suitable for two adults, with enough cushioning and support to make overnight use comfortable.
At the same time, the furniture needed to arrive in compact individual boxes, assemble without tools, convert easily and look like a modern lounge.
We also wanted removable, washable upholstery.
The challenge wasn't creating one individual feature.
The difficult part was making every detail work alongside the others.
We couldn't simply add a heavy mechanism to achieve a comfortable bed if that defeated the purpose of modular delivery.
We couldn't make the sofa smaller if it meant two people couldn't sleep comfortably.
And we couldn't focus entirely on sleeping comfort while neglecting the experience of sitting on the lounge every day.
It took our team 24 months to develop and launch Neptune's first patent-pending sleeper system.
That process shaped our approach to every sleeper collection developed since.
We believe the quality of a product is defined by how well all the important details work together.
Are Sofa Beds Comfortable Enough for Two Adults?
Yes, a thoughtfully engineered sofa bed can provide comfortable sleeping for two adults in an appropriately sized configuration.
However, comfort depends on more than the thickness of the cushioning.
Firmness and Support
Some people prefer a firm sleeping surface.
Others want a softer, more cushioned feel.
Cozey offers both.
Neptune and Orian use approximately 13 cm of firmer sleeping foam.
Atmosphere Sleeper provides approximately 20 cm of softer cushioning.
The right option depends on your preferred sleeping feel.
How Evenly the Surface Supports the Body
A sleeping surface should provide comfortable support in different positions.
We assess sleeping comfort through employee sleep trials, evaluations of different sleeping positions, and foam and structural testing.
This helps us understand the experience beyond what can be measured from the furniture's dimensions alone.
Transitions Between Modular Sections
A modular sofa bed uses separate sections that unfold or extend to create a bed.
Those transitions need to be carefully engineered.
We work to reduce the feeling of hard edges between sections and recommend fitted mattress toppers to add cushioning and create a more continuous sleeping experience.
Room for Two People
A sofa that opens into a sleeping position isn't necessarily large enough for two adults to sleep comfortably.
We recommend checking the actual unfolded dimensions before buying, rather than relying only on the words sofa bed or double sleeper.
How Does Cozey Test Sofa-Bed Comfort?
At Cozey, we don't believe comfort testing should stop at a short demonstration.
Our development process includes employee sleep trials, different sleeping positions, and foam and structural evaluations.
Testing has helped us identify and correct issues during product development.
What We Changed During Neptune Development
Early versions of Neptune were too firm.
Although the sleeping surface provided support, we wanted it to feel more comfortable.
We adjusted the cushioning to create a better balance.
We also noticed that the back support wasn't quite right when the furniture was used as a sofa.
This led us to introduce a lumbar pillow for every Neptune seat.
These refinements illustrate why multifunctional furniture is difficult to design.
A sofa bed needs to feel good when someone lies down, but it also needs to provide comfortable seating during the day.
For us, neither function should be an afterthought.
Which Cozey Sofa Bed Is Best for You?
Summary: Neptune is best for supportive seating and integrated storage, Orian for compact queen-size sleeping, and Atmosphere Sleeper for softer sleeping and style flexibility.
We offer three sleeper systems because customers have different tastes, room sizes and sleeping requirements.
Neptune, Orian and Atmosphere Sleeper have distinct designs, proportions and mechanisms.
What they share is our focus on modularity, easy assembly, attractive styling, washable covers and everyday comfort.
| Feature | Neptune | Orian | Atmosphere Sleeper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Supportive seating and integrated storage | Compact queen-size sleeping | Softer sleeping and style flexibility |
| Everyday seating | Firmer and more upright | Firm seats, softer back pillows | Balanced, lounge-oriented comfort |
| Sleeping feel | Firmer and supportive | Firmer and supportive | Softer and more cushioned |
| Sleeping foam | Approximately 13 cm | Approximately 13 cm | Approximately 20 cm |
| Bed format | Full-size and other modular arrangements | Queen-size base configuration | Flexible modular dimensions |
| Storage | Built into every seat | Separate storage modules and ottomans | Available elsewhere in Atmosphere, not in sleeper modules |
| Extended height | Elevated | Elevated | Closer to the floor |
| Cushions during conversion | Lumbar pillows can be stored | Loose back pillows removed | Cushions remain integrated |
Neptune: For Support and Integrated Storage
Neptune combines firmer seating, tall backrests and sleeper functionality.
It includes a lumbar pillow with every seat, with optional headrests available.
Every seat also contains integrated storage, making it convenient to keep bedding, pillows or blankets nearby.
Its three-seat Full configuration measures approximately 228 cm wide as a sofa.
Neptune is particularly attractive for customers who want a practical everyday lounge with a supportive sleeping surface.
Orian: For a Compact Queen-Size Sofa Bed
Orian provides queen-size sleeping functionality from a relatively compact sofa.
Its two-seat configuration measures approximately 185 cm wide.
The seating combines firm cushions with softer, loose back pillows.
Its sleeper seats don't contain integrated storage, but separate storage modules and ottomans are available.
Orian also has its own mechanism and proportions, rather than simply being a smaller version of Neptune.
Atmosphere Sleeper: For Softer Sleeping and Design Flexibility
Atmosphere Sleeper offers a softer sleeping surface and a lower-profile lounging experience.
It also provides different arm styles, upholstery colours and modular configurations.
Unlike Neptune and Orian, the extended sleeping section sits closer to the floor.
For customers who prioritise a softer feel and a more customisable design, Atmosphere Sleeper offers a different approach.
What's the Best Sofa Bed for a Small Australian Apartment?
Summary: Measure the sofa bed fully open as well as closed, check the access route into your home, and consider modular boxed delivery and tool-free assembly for narrow entrances.
When floor space is limited, a sofa bed can help one room serve multiple purposes.
A spare room can become an office and occasional guest room.
A living room can accommodate overnight visitors without permanently occupying space with a bed.
But the ideal configuration depends on how the sofa fits both when closed and when fully extended.
Measure the Open Bed, Not Just the Sofa
Before purchasing, measure:
- The width of the sofa.
- The full depth when opened into a bed.
- The available walking space around it.
- Nearby furniture that may need to move.
- The access route from your building entrance to the room.
This is particularly important when considering a queen-size sleeper or a sofa bed that unfolds perpendicular to the wall.

Boxed Delivery Makes Narrow Access Easier
A conventional sofa bed may contain a large, heavy mechanism inside one continuous frame.
That can make it difficult to manoeuvre through a narrow terrace hallway or an apartment staircase.
Cozey's modular system is designed for delivery in separate boxes.
Our packaging limits include:
- Approximately 23 kg maximum per box.
- Approximately 122 cm maximum longest side.
- Approximately 330 cm maximum combined length and girth.
These limits help make delivery more manageable, although customers should still measure tight entrances and turns.
Assembly Without Tools
Cozey sofa beds are designed to assemble without tools.
Customers don't need to install a large conventional pull-out mechanism after delivery.
This makes modular construction particularly useful for people who expect to move or rearrange their furniture over time.
Are Cozey Sofa Beds Easy to Open and Close?
Summary: Each sleeper module converts in about 10 to 20 seconds, but bedding must be removed before the bed is closed.
Yes. We designed our sleeper systems so most adults can operate them independently and without significant lifting.
Ease of operation was a major priority from the beginning.
A sofa bed loses much of its practicality if opening it becomes a difficult task.
We regularly demonstrate our mechanisms in Cozey stores, where customers can experience how they work.
For each sleeper module, the approximate conversion times are:
- Neptune: 20 seconds.
- Orian: 20 seconds.
- Atmosphere Sleeper: 10 seconds.
These estimates refer to operating the mechanism itself.
Preparing bedding takes additional time.
Do the Cushions Need to Be Removed?
Neptune's main components remain integrated, and its lumbar pillows can be placed in the storage compartments.
Orian's loose back pillows need to be removed, but they're relatively compact.
Atmosphere Sleeper's cushions remain integrated into the sofa during conversion.
Can You Close the Bed With Sheets Still On?
No.
With all three collections, sheets, mattress toppers and other bedding must be removed before closing the bed.
This is an important consideration for customers who plan to use the sleeper function frequently.
The conversion itself is simple, but the bedding still needs to be handled separately.
Can You Use a Sofa Bed as a Chaise Lounge?
Yes. This is one of our favourite benefits of modular sleeper systems.
You don't have to convert every seat into a bed at once.
Each sleeper section can be opened independently.
That means one person can stretch out with their legs extended while another remains seated upright beside them.
Chaise Lounging Height: The Difference Between the Collections
Neptune and Orian create elevated lounging surfaces at regular seat height.
Atmosphere Sleeper provides similar independent conversion, but its extension sits much closer to the floor.
This flexibility makes the sleeper useful even when nobody is staying overnight.
It's not simply a lounge by day and a bed by night.
It can accommodate different ways of sitting, stretching out and relaxing throughout the day.
How Comfortable Are Cozey Sofa Beds for Couples?
When two people share a sofa bed, there are two important considerations beyond firmness: sleeping dimensions and motion transfer.
Why Our Modular Construction Helps Minimise Motion Transfer
Cozey's sleeper systems are made up of separate supporting sections.
A three-seat Neptune sleeping surface uses six sections: the seat and back component from each of the three modules.
A two-seat Orian uses six sections: the seat, back and middle folding section of each sleeper module.
A three-seat Atmosphere Sleeper also uses six sections across its cushions and seat bases.
Because these parts support the sleeping surface separately, movement can be more localised.
This helps minimise how much one person disturbs the other when moving during the night.
It doesn't mean motion transfer is eliminated, but it's a design consideration we take seriously.
Recommended Weight for Long-Term Use
We recommend approximately 159 kg per person for long-term use.
This recommendation considers the durability of the foam, not simply the immediate strength of the structure.
Our sleeper systems are engineered to support substantial weight, but heavier sustained loads can accelerate foam softening and compression over time.
We believe it's important to communicate weight recommendations in terms of long-term comfort as well as construction strength.
Do Cozey Sofa Beds Need Special Sheets?
This depends on the collection and sleeping configuration.
Neptune and Orian offer conventional bed-size options.
Atmosphere Sleeper uses different dimensions, making specially fitted bedding more helpful.
For Australian customers, there's an additional consideration: bed names and measurements can differ between North America and Australia.
Cozey's Neptune Full configuration, for example, should not automatically be assumed to match every Australian Double fitted sheet.
We recommend checking the exact length and width of your selected sleeping surface before purchasing third-party bedding.
Why We Recommend the Cozey Sleep Kit
We recommend the Cozey Sleep Kit across our sleeper range because it's designed around the dimensions of the products.
The mattress topper serves two purposes.
First, it adds cushioning.
Second, it helps smooth the transitions between modular sleeping sections.
This can create a more comfortable, cohesive sleeping surface.
Our Sleep Kits also include bedding selected for the relevant configuration, such as fitted and flat sheets, pillows and a comforter, depending on the kit.
For us, a comfortable sleeping experience involves the entire setup—not just the sofa itself.
How Durable Are Cozey Sofa-Bed Mechanisms?
A sofa bed is likely to be opened and closed repeatedly throughout its life.
We don't believe the sleeper mechanism should be the component that determines when the furniture needs replacing.
That's why we test our mechanisms through thousands of opening and closing cycles during development.
These tests simulate repeated operation beyond typical expected household use.
Our objective is to engineer the sleeper system for longevity comparable to other Cozey sofas.
What About Sofa-Bed Operating Safety?
When developing Neptune and Orian, we considered potential finger-pinching points, sudden movements and other risks associated with mechanical conversion.
Customers should still follow operating instructions and keep hands clear of moving joints.
Is Sofa-Bed Mechanism Maintenance Required?
Our mechanisms are designed for relatively simple ownership.
If a hinge develops a creaking sound, appropriate lubrication may help.
However, we don't recommend independently tightening or modifying the mechanism unless our support team has specifically instructed you to do so.
Mechanical or structural concerns should be reviewed with Customer Happiness.
Are Washable Covers Important for a Sofa Bed?
Absolutely.
A sofa bed needs to function as everyday living-room furniture as well as an occasional sleeping surface.
That means handling spills, food, pets, children and regular use.
Cozey sleeper collections offer removable, machine-washable covers on eligible upholstered components.
Neptune and Orian provide removable seat and back cushion covers.
Atmosphere offers fully removable and interchangeable upholstery, allowing customers to refresh their sofa's appearance with compatible covers.
How We Evaluate Fabric Performance
We test removable covers through repeated machine-wash cycles, evaluating how they respond in areas such as colour, shrinkage and fit.
We also conduct lightfastness testing to understand how fabrics respond to light exposure.
This is useful in Australian homes where furniture may receive strong sunlight through windows.
No fabric is immune to ageing or sunlight exposure, but testing and consistent manufacturing help us control the factors we can.
Customers should follow the care instructions for their specific fabric and collection.
Which Sofa Beds Have Storage?
Storage is particularly helpful when you don't have a dedicated guest bedroom.
Sheets, pillows, quilts and mattress toppers all need somewhere to go when the bed isn't in use.
Neptune provides integrated storage inside every seat.
Orian offers separate storage seats and ottomans.
Atmosphere offers storage options elsewhere in the collection, although its sleeper modules don't have built-in storage.
This distinction is worth considering before choosing a collection.
If convenient storage for bedding is one of your main priorities, Neptune may be particularly appealing.
If you're willing to store bedding elsewhere and prefer a different aesthetic or sleeping feel, Orian or Atmosphere Sleeper may be better suited to your home.
Can You Expand a Cozey Sofa Bed Later?
Yes.
Long-term adaptability is one of the most valuable aspects of modular sleeper furniture.
A customer might purchase a compact sofa bed for their first apartment, then want additional seating after moving into a larger home.
With Cozey, compatible modules can be purchased individually.
Neptune and Orian can be expanded with additional sleeper seats or storage seats.
Atmosphere Sleeper can be expanded with compatible sleeper seats.
Does the Bed Become Bigger When You Add a Sleeper Seat?
Yes, when adding another sleeper seat.
For Neptune and Atmosphere Sleeper, the sleeping surface becomes longer.
For Orian, it becomes wider.
There is one important limitation with Orian: after adding another sleeper seat, the enlarged bed no longer corresponds to a conventional standard bed size.
Customers may therefore need to consider alternative bedding arrangements.
We also work to support existing customers who want matching compatible modules years after their original purchase, including made-to-order options when appropriate.
Availability, compatibility and lead times should be confirmed with our team.
Is a Sofa Bed Suitable for Sleeping Every Night?
A comfortable sofa bed can be an excellent solution for guests, short-term living arrangements and occasions when additional sleeping space is needed.
But daily sleeping over many years is a different requirement.
The right answer depends on the sleeper's support preferences, comfort needs and the furniture's intended use.
We design our sleeper systems to provide comfortable sleeping and durable operation.
However, for someone planning to sleep on the same surface every night indefinitely, a dedicated mattress may be the more suitable choice.
We also recommend considering the practical routine of removing and reinstalling bedding each day.
Good furniture should fit your habits, not require you to change them unnecessarily.
Where Are Cozey Sofa Beds Designed and Manufactured?
Cozey was founded in Montreal, Canada, where our design, engineering, product development and R&D teams are based.
Our designers and engineers develop the products, and Cozey owns the intellectual property and technical specifications behind them.
We work with manufacturing partners internationally, including in Thailand, Mexico, China, Malaysia and India.
Our own quality-control team oversees manufacturing and verifies products against Cozey's specifications before they leave the factory.
We also maintain direct relationships with our customers, allowing feedback and recurring issues to inform our product development.
Neptune's cushioning and lumbar support improvements demonstrate how we use real-world testing and feedback to refine our designs.
For Australian customers, our objective is to bring this combination of engineering, modern design and practical functionality to furniture that's accessible through our Australian online store.
Final Thoughts: The Best Sofa Bed Should Be a Great Lounge First
At Cozey, we don't believe customers should have to accept an unattractive or uncomfortable lounge simply because it converts into a bed.
A great sofa bed should look beautiful, provide excellent everyday seating and create a comfortable place for guests to sleep.
It should be easy to move into your home, simple to assemble, effortless to operate and practical to maintain.
It should offer useful features such as washable covers, storage and modular expansion.
And it should be engineered for years of reliable use.
This combination is what took us 24 months to develop with Neptune.
Orian and Atmosphere Sleeper build on the same philosophy while offering different designs, comfort levels, dimensions and mechanisms.
The best sofa bed isn't the one with the most impressive single feature. It's the one where every important detail works together to make living more comfortable.
That's what we're working to create at Cozey.
