A good bed frame should be sturdy, but it should also fit your life and reflect your personal style. Choosing a bed shouldn't necessarily mean accepting one fixed combination of headboard, frame shape, storage and fabric.
When shopping for an upholstered bed, customers often face a trade-off.
A bed might have the headboard they love but the wrong frame shape. Another might offer storage but only in one design. Others look beautiful but have permanently attached upholstery that's difficult to remove and clean.
And beneath the upholstery, it's not always clear how the mattress is supported.
At Cozey, we wanted to approach bed design differently.
Our Ara Upholstered Bed was developed around four equally important objectives:
- Structural stability and durability, supported by a steel frame and slatted foundation.
- Compact packaging and convenient delivery, making a large bed easier to bring into the home.
- Easier assembly, disassembly and moving, with manageable modular components.
- Personalization, allowing customers to choose their frame shape, headboard, storage configuration, fabric and color.
We also wanted to bring familiar advantages from our modular sofas into the bedroom.
Our sofas are designed around choices in configuration and upholstery, with removable and machine-washable covers that make everyday maintenance more practical.
We believed customers should have similar flexibility when purchasing a bed.
That was the thinking behind Ara: not simply another upholstered platform bed, but a customizable bed system built around a common structural foundation.
Here's how it works, what makes it sturdy and what customers should know before purchasing.

Why Did We Make Ara Customizable?
Most bedrooms are personal spaces.
People have different needs, different tastes and different amounts of room.
Some prefer rounded shapes and a soft appearance. Others want straight lines and a more structured design.
Some need under-bed storage, while others prefer a simpler frame.
And while one customer may want a neutral fabric that blends into the room, another may prefer a more distinctive texture or color.
We didn't want customers to have to compromise on one of those preferences simply because they'd chosen another.
Bringing the Cozey Sofa Philosophy Into the Bedroom
Cozey's modular sofas helped shape how we think about furniture.
Instead of selling only a fixed design, we believe customers should have meaningful choices in how furniture looks and functions.
We also believe furniture should be practical to deliver, assemble, maintain and adapt.
For Ara, we applied these ideas to a bed.
The underlying structural frame supports different compatible exterior configurations.
Customers can select the visible parts of the bed without needing a completely different support system for each style.
And removable upholstery means maintaining the fabric can be a separate decision from replacing the bed's structure.
This combination of personalization and practicality was as important to us as the frame itself.
What Can You Customize on the Ara Upholstered Bed?
Ara offers several levels of personalization.
Choose a Round or Square Frame
The first major choice is the bed-frame shape.
- Round has softer exterior corners and a more sculpted silhouette.
- Square emphasizes clean lines and a more architectural appearance.
Both use the underlying Ara structural platform.
The difference is the exterior design, not a completely different approach to supporting the mattress.
Choose Storage or Non-Storage
Both Round and Square frame styles are available in storage and non-storage configurations.
The storage version has four side-access drawers, two on each side.
The non-storage version has a simpler exterior setup without the drawers.
We wanted customers to be able to choose storage based on their needs, rather than have the decision imposed by their preferred frame shape.
Choose Your Headboard
Ara Upholstered offers four headboard designs.
| Headboard | What distinguishes it |
|---|---|
| Round | A softer, curved silhouette |
| Square | Straight lines and a clean geometric shape |
| Pillow | A more relaxed upholstered design incorporating pillows |
| Extended | A wider headboard intended to create a stronger visual statement |
Compatible headboards and frames can be mixed and matched within the collection, provided they are the same bed size.
A customer might pair a Round frame with a Square headboard, or choose an Extended headboard with a more understated base.
These choices affect the bed's look and may also change the overall width or depth of the furniture.
We recommend checking the complete dimensions of your selected configuration, especially if your bedroom is compact.
Choose Fabric and Color
This was particularly important to us.
Ara Upholstered uses fabric choices from the familiar Cozey upholstery family used across our sofa collections.
Customers can select from different colors and textures, subject to the options offered for the chosen component.
There are also design details such as seam finishes on selected headboards.
Not every fabric or decorative finish is available for every component, so customers should use the current configurator to see which combinations are supported.
Removable, Machine-Washable Upholstery
The most practical part of this system is that the supported upholstered frame and headboard covers are removable and machine-washable.
This brings one of the key Cozey sofa advantages into the bedroom.
A permanently upholstered bed may require specialized cleaning when its fabric becomes dirty.
With Ara, eligible covers can be removed and cleaned separately according to their care labels.
Compatible replacement covers can also allow customers to refresh the appearance of their bed without replacing its structural frame.
We wanted the bed to offer more than choices at checkout. We wanted it to remain practical to own.
What Is Underneath Ara's Upholstery?
While the exterior is customizable, the mattress is supported by Ara's structural foundation.
The main frame is made from black powder-coated steel.
It consists of four connecting quadrants that form the support platform.
The design also includes four corner legs and four round supporting legs.
The upholstered exterior panels are attached to this structural system.
Why Steel?
Steel allows us to create a strong, precisely connected structural foundation.
However, we wouldn't claim that every metal bed is automatically better than every wooden bed.
Construction quality, frame geometry, joint design and proper support all matter.
For Ara, the steel foundation was selected as part of the complete modular system.
Why Divide It Into Four Sections?
Our design objective wasn't simply to make the smallest possible box.
We wanted a bed that could be delivered in manageable components, assembled inside the room and disassembled more conveniently if customers move.
This is particularly relevant in apartment buildings with narrow staircases, limited elevator space or tight hallway corners.
Moving one oversized bed frame can be difficult.
With Ara, the components can be brought in separately and connected in the bedroom.
The completed structure still needs to function as a stable foundation.
That's why the supporting legs and connections are integral parts of the design.
How Much Weight Can the Ara Bed Support?
The current Ara assembly instructions specify these maximum total loads.
| Bed size | Maximum total load |
|---|---|
| Full | 600 lb |
| Queen | 800 lb |
| King | 900 lb |
These limits include the mattress and everyone sleeping on or using the bed.
For example, if two adults use a Queen Ara, their combined weight plus the mattress must remain within the published 800-pound limit.
This is a total frame rating, not a per-person limit.
Does the Selected Headboard Change the Weight Capacity?
Changing to another compatible headboard or selecting a different upholstery color doesn't change the published structural weight rating.
The headboard is not a replacement for the bed's main support system.
Similarly, the storage drawers are separate from the structural mattress support.
Does Weight Capacity Prove Long-Term Durability?
Not by itself.
A maximum load rating tells customers how much total weight the frame is specified to support.
It doesn't provide a guaranteed number of years of service.
Long-term performance depends on proper assembly, normal use, maintenance and environmental conditions.
We don't claim a 20-year or 25-year lifespan based solely on Ara's weight capacity.
What Kind of Slats Does Ara Use?
Ara's mattress-support system uses laminated veneer lumber (LVL) slats.
These are engineered wood components made from bonded layers of veneer.
The slats are organized in assemblies using nylon straps, helping keep them together during installation.
Slat Dimensions and Spacing
| Specification | Ara measurement |
|---|---|
| Slat thickness | Approximately 0.59 in (15 mm) |
| Slat width | Approximately 2.95 in (75 mm) |
| Full gap between slats | Approximately 2.64 in (67 mm) |
| Queen gap between slats | Approximately 2.24 in (57 mm) |
| King gap between slats | Approximately 2.24 in (57 mm) |
These details are useful because a mattress foundation should be evaluated based on actual support characteristics, not just whether a bed includes slats.
Why Does the Gap Between Slats Matter?
Different mattresses may require different foundation conditions.
Some foam and hybrid mattress manufacturers specify a maximum slat gap.
If the spacing is incompatible with the mattress, that may affect support or the mattress manufacturer's warranty.
We recommend checking those requirements before choosing a bed frame.
Does Ara Need a Box Spring?
Ara includes its own slatted platform-style foundation.
A separate conventional box spring generally isn't required.
However, the correct setup depends on the selected mattress.
Customers should check the mattress manufacturer's instructions rather than assume universal compatibility.
Is a Modular Bed Frame Less Sturdy?
Not necessarily.
Modular construction means a product is assembled from components.
It doesn't inherently mean the finished product is unstable.
For a modular bed to perform well, the connection points and support system need to be properly designed and installed.
The Three Engineering Goals Behind Ara's Frame
We wanted the underlying structure to:
- Provide reliable mattress support.
- Fit into compact, more manageable delivery boxes.
- Be practical to assemble, disassemble and move.
These weren't separate design projects. They needed to work together.
The four steel quadrants, supporting legs and frame connections were developed as one system.
What Are the Trade-Offs?
Modular furniture has joints.
Those joints need to be connected securely.
If components are assembled incorrectly, they may shift, create noise or fail to perform as intended.
Proper assembly is therefore essential.
Customers should follow Cozey's instructions and use the supplied hardware.
We don't recommend improvised structural modifications.
Does Ara Squeak or Creak?
Bed-frame noise is a common customer concern.
We're not aware of recurring complaints about Ara squeaking, creaking or feeling unstable based on the product feedback currently known to us.
However, we wouldn't claim that Ara can never produce noise.
Any bed may make sounds under certain conditions.
What Causes Bed-Frame Noise?
Possible causes include loose joints, incorrectly installed slats, uneven floors, movement at contact points or sound coming from the mattress.
A headboard touching a wall can also contribute to unwanted noise.
What Should You Do if Your Ara Bed Makes Noise?
Check the frame installation against the assembly guide.
Confirm that all supporting legs and structural connections are secured.
Verify that the slats are correctly positioned and that the bed sits on a level surface.
If the sound continues, contact Cozey Customer Happiness.
Our team can help assess whether a component needs attention or replacement.
The goal should be to identify the source rather than assume the entire bed has a structural problem.
Are Storage and Non-Storage Ara Beds Equally Sturdy?
Both use Ara's structural support platform and have the same published frame weight capacities.
The storage version adds four drawers, with two on each side.
These drawers are designed to hold belongings, not to provide the primary support for the mattress.
Drawer Load Limits
Each drawer has a separate maximum load of 20 pounds.
This is different from the 600-, 800- or 900-pound total frame limit.
Customers should respect both ratings.
Why Four Side Drawers?
We chose this storage method because we wanted belongings to be accessible without lifting the mattress platform.
Someone can open a drawer while their partner is sleeping.
Customers don't need to remove pillows or bedding first.
And each drawer operates separately.
However, side drawers require clear space to open and can be obstructed by nightstands or other furniture.
The best storage configuration depends on your room and your habits.
How Does Washable Upholstery Affect Durability?
We think it's useful to distinguish structural durability from upholstery longevity.
The steel frame may remain in excellent condition while the fabric accumulates everyday marks or wear.
With a permanently upholstered bed, that can make maintenance more difficult.
Ara's removable covers provide additional flexibility.
Keeping the Bed Clean
Customers can remove supported upholstery covers and follow the washing instructions for their selected fabric.
Not every material should be treated in exactly the same way.
Care labels should always take priority.
Changing the Look Without Replacing the Frame
Compatible replacement covers can also allow customers to change the color or refresh a worn surface.
We consider this an important part of customization.
A customer shouldn't necessarily need a completely new bed structure simply because their fabric preferences have changed.
Shared Advantages With Cozey Sofas
Our sofas helped establish this approach to furniture care.
We wanted Ara to offer the same type of practical benefit through familiar Cozey fabrics and removable upholstery.
That doesn't mean fabrics are immune to fading, staining or wear.
It means customers have more options for maintaining them.
Can You Change the Headboard or Frame Later?
Ara is designed around compatible components, but customers should distinguish between configuration possibilities and the availability of individual parts for later purchase.
At the time of ordering, customers can combine supported upholstered frame styles and headboards within the same size.
This provides meaningful personalization from the beginning.
What About Changing Your Mind Later?
Depending on available compatible products and components, customers may be able to obtain replacement upholstery or other individual parts.
However, not every headboard, storage conversion or frame component is necessarily offered separately for every generation.
We recommend confirming availability and compatibility with Cozey before planning a future change.
The system is modular, but that shouldn't be interpreted as a promise that every possible conversion is available indefinitely.
How Difficult Is Ara to Assemble?
We designed Ara to be easier to deliver and assemble than a large, permanently constructed frame.
But customers should have realistic expectations.
The Main Frame
The four steel sections are connected using the intended system.
The supporting legs are installed.
The exterior frame panels attach through the designed connectors.
Slats and the chosen headboard complete the main assembly.
Some Headboards Require Additional Steps
The Round, Square, Pillow and Extended headboards aren't identical in shape or packaged components.
A wider headboard may require different assembly steps from a more compact design.
Customers should follow the guide for the exact headboard selected.
Does Ara Require Tools?
The main structure uses hand fasteners and clip-on elements.
However, storage drawer assembly involves screws, hardware and an included Allen key.
It wouldn't be accurate to describe every part of every storage configuration as completely tool-free.
Should Two People Assemble It?
The current assembly instructions recommend two adults for larger pieces.
Some steps are designed to be manageable individually, but assistance can make positioning and handling components easier.
Why Does Proper Assembly Matter?
A frame's intended stability depends on all structural connections being correctly installed.
Loose or incomplete assembly can affect the way the bed feels and may contribute to movement or noise.
How Long Should Ara Last?
This is one of the most important questions when buying any bed frame.
We designed Ara for normal residential use with a steel structural foundation, LVL slats and replaceable components.
However, we don't publish a guaranteed lifespan based solely on those design choices.
A bed's longevity depends on its environment, proper assembly, loading, frequency of use and maintenance.
Does Ara Have Long-Term Fatigue-Test Results?
We don't currently have published long-term fatigue-test results that establish a specific service life in years.
Therefore, we wouldn't claim that Ara will definitely last 20 years or remain completely unchanged throughout its life.
We believe customers deserve that distinction.
What Warranty Does Ara Have?
Cozey offers a five-year limited warranty covering qualifying manufacturing defects, subject to its terms.
A warranty period is separate from the actual useful life of a product.
It also doesn't mean that normal wear or every type of accidental damage is covered.
Can You Replace Individual Ara Parts?
Yes. Individual replacement parts can be supplied through Cozey's Customer Happiness team.
This is an important part of our approach to modular furniture.
A bed contains several components that can experience different kinds of wear or damage.
A slat, leg, connector, external panel or piece of hardware may need attention while the rest of the bed remains functional.
In those situations, replacing an individual component may be more practical than purchasing a completely new bed.
How Do You Request a Replacement?
Contact Customer Happiness with your order information and a description of the problem.
Photographs can help the team identify the relevant part.
Replacement options depend on compatibility and availability for the specific model and production generation.
We don't guarantee that every component will be available indefinitely, but customers have a direct route to request assistance.
Why Does This Matter?
We believe durability should include practical maintainability.
Furniture shouldn't automatically become unusable because one replaceable component needs attention.
The ability to service individual parts is consistent with the modular thinking behind Ara.
Who Is Ara Best Suited For?
Ara is worth considering for customers who want a bed that combines structural support with design flexibility.
It may be particularly attractive if you:
- Want to choose your own headboard and bed-frame shape.
- Prefer an upholstered bed with familiar Cozey fabrics.
- Value removable, machine-washable upholstery.
- Want to choose between storage and non-storage.
- Live somewhere that makes moving large furniture difficult.
- Expect to move and value modular disassembly.
- Want a bed with published weight and slat specifications.
- Appreciate the availability of individual replacement parts.
Who Should Consider Another Design?
Someone who needs a specialized adjustable foundation should confirm compatibility before ordering.
Customers who want a solid-wood exterior or a different sleeping height should compare other models.
And anyone expecting a guaranteed multi-decade lifespan should distinguish that expectation from Ara's published specifications and limited warranty.
We believe a good recommendation should match the customer's actual needs rather than suggest one bed is perfect for everyone.
Final Thoughts: A Bed Should Be Sturdy and Personal
When we developed Ara, we wanted to create more than a comfortable-looking upholstered bed.
We wanted a product that brought important Cozey advantages into the bedroom.
That meant reliable structural support, but also a bed that could be delivered in manageable components and assembled more conveniently.
Most importantly, we wanted customers to personalize their bed.
They should be able to choose the frame shape, headboard, storage configuration, fabric and color that suit their home.
And we wanted those fabrics to offer the same practical removable, machine-washable-cover benefits familiar from our sofas.
Underneath the upholstered design, Ara uses a four-part steel frame, supporting legs and engineered-wood slats.
Its weight capacities are clearly stated.
Individual replacement parts can be supplied through Customer Happiness.
We don't claim the bed will never squeak or guarantee a lifespan unsupported by testing.
Instead, we believe customers should understand exactly what they're buying and how to care for it.
For us, Ara is more than a bed frame. It's a customizable bedroom system designed to combine structural support, personal expression and practical everyday living.
