How to Choose a Comfy Couch: Seat Depth, Firmness and Back Support

What makes a couch comfortable, how our collections differ on depth, firmness and back support, and a 10-minute sit test you can run before you buy.

A comfortable Cozey sofa

Short answer: A comfy couch is one whose seat depth, seat height, firmness and back support match the way you actually sit, so decide first whether you sit upright or sink in. Our modular sofas cover that whole range, from the firm, upright Neptune to the soft, deep Ciello and Gaia, with free shipping that our product pages describe as fast across every US state except Hawaii, Alaska and the Virgin Islands, and removable covers you can machine wash.

Comfort is personal, so the measurements and the sit test below give you a short checklist for comparing couches on facts rather than on a photo.

What makes a couch comfortable?

Six things decide how a couch feels. The first two work together, which is why we compare them side by side in our seat depth and height guide. The points below are general advice, not a product specification.

  • Seat depth: the distance from the front of the seat to the front of the back cushion. If it is too deep for your legs, you must choose between leaning on the back and keeping your feet on the floor. A deeper seat suits curling up and sitting cross-legged.
  • Seat height: the distance from the floor to the top of the seat cushion. A higher seat puts your feet farther from the floor even when the seat is not deep. A lower seat is closer to the ground and can feel more relaxed.
  • Firmness: firm seats hold their shape and give structure for reading or working on a laptop. Soft seats let you sink in for lounging.
  • Back support: height, angle and fill all matter. A back that reaches your upper back feels supportive when you lean. A lower, softer back suits lounging.
  • Cushion fill: loose foam-and-fiber cushions feel plush and need fluffing every week or two, while layered-foam seats keep a steadier feel with little routine fluffing. Our guide to keeping cushions plump explains the routine.
  • Arms and fabric: arm height decides whether you can lean on the side or rest your head against it. Fabric changes how the couch feels to the touch. Our sofa fabric guide explains textures and durability.

How do our collections differ?

We design each collection to give a different comfort experience instead of one feel for everyone. The seat depths below are the usable depth with the back cushions in place, as listed on each product page, and the firmness order is our own qualitative ranking from softest to firmest, not a laboratory measurement.

Orian25.5 inches16.5 inchesFirm seatSoft, fiber-filled pillows
Neptune22.4 inches16.9 inchesOur firmest, most structured seatTall, firm back; optional headrests

Ciello and Gaia share the same basic seat construction, so their softness is very close. What separates them is depth and the back. Ciello Regular is the shallowest of the soft group, Ciello XL is the deepest, and Gaia sits between them with a taller, more upright back. Our Ciello vs Gaia guide covers that choice in detail. Since 2026, Ciello and Gaia also have an extra 1.5-inch layer of foam in the seat base for more cushioning between you and the frame.

Orian pairs a firm seat with soft back pillows, so you get support underneath and a relaxed lean behind you. Cassini has a lower seat at 17 inches, and all of its seats are the same 26.4 inches deep. For a full ranking by softness, upright sitting and lounging, read our sofa comfort guide.

Which couch suits which body and use?

Height alone does not decide fit, because leg length, torso proportions and how you like to sit matter just as much. This table is a starting point.

Which couch suits which body and use?

Use or bodyWhat to look forWhere to start
Lounging and napsA deep, soft seatCiello XL or Gaia XL
Movie nights and TVDepth plus a back that supports your head and shouldersAtmosphere, or Ciello XL with high angled backs
Reading or working uprightA firmer, shallower seat and a tall backNeptune, with Cassini as a lower, sculpted alternative
Shorter peopleA lower seat, and a shallower one if your feet do not reach the floor while you lean backNeptune, or Cassini for its lower 17-inch seat
Taller peopleA deeper seat for longer legsAtmosphere, Orian, Ciello XL or Gaia XL
Overnight guestsA sofa that opens into a bedNeptune, Orian or Atmosphere Sleeper
Small spacesThe shallowest seat depthsCiello Regular at 21.7 inches or Neptune at 22.4 inches
Extra back supportA higher or optionally supported backNeptune with headrests, Ciello XL with high angled backs, or Atmosphere with higher rounded backs

If two people of different heights share a sofa, consider a shallower sofa plus an ottoman, or a deeper sofa with pillows behind the person who prefers less depth. For a small room, our guide to sofas for small apartments compares footprints.

What about sofa beds and guests?

Our sofa beds are made from the sofa's own seat and back cushions, so the sofa you sit on is also the bed. Neptune and Orian feel firm, and Atmosphere Sleeper is softer and more cushioned. The sleeper seat cushions hold about 5.1 inches of layered foam in Neptune, 4.3 inches of foam in Orian and about 8.7 inches in Atmosphere Sleeper. Our guides to the most comfortable sofa bed for guests and to whether our sofa beds are comfortable cover the sleeping surface.

How do you test a couch in 10 minutes?

Run this test in a showroom, at a friend's home or on the sofa you already own. It is general advice.

1. Sit all the way back (1 minute). Can your back rest on the cushion while your feet are flat where you want them?

2. Sit upright, then slouch (2 minutes). Does the back meet your upper back, and does your lower back feel supported?

3. Try your usual posture (2 minutes). Curl up, cross your legs or put your feet up, whatever you do at home.

4. Stand up and sit down three times (1 minute). Notice how much effort the seat height and firmness ask of you.

5. Lean on the arm (1 minute). Is the arm a good height for your elbow or your head?

6. Sit beside someone (1 minute). Check how the seat feels when it is shared.

7. Stay put (2 minutes). Notice any pressure points at your hips, thighs or lower back.

Shopping online means you cannot sit first, so measure the seat depth of a couch you already find comfortable and compare it with the table above. We also offer free swatches on our swatches page so you can feel the fabric, and a 30-day risk-free trial: if the sofa is not the right fit we will take it back for free, as long as you keep the original boxes. If you want help narrowing the choice, you can book a free design consultation.

What about covers, delivery and warranty?

The cushion and backrest covers on our sofas are removable, and you can machine wash them on a cold, gentle cycle and air dry them. On Ciello, Gaia, Atmosphere and Cassini the covers can also be replaced. On Orian and Neptune, the arms and bases are fixed. Our product pages describe shipping as fast and free across every US state except Hawaii, Alaska and the Virgin Islands, with no order minimum, and our shipping guide explains estimates, tracking and returns. Our sofas are also covered by a five-year limited warranty.

Our recommendation

Pick by how you sit, then confirm with the sit test.

  • You like to sink in and curl up: Ciello or Gaia, and the XL size if you want the deepest seat.
  • You want a balance of support and lounging: Atmosphere, which suits sitting upright and stretching out.
  • You prefer upright, firm support: Neptune, with optional headrests, or Cassini for a lower, sculpted look.
  • You want a firm seat but a soft place to lean: Orian.
  • You host overnight guests: Neptune or Orian for a firmer bed, Atmosphere Sleeper for a softer one.

If you are still unsure, our guide to choosing the right Cozey sofa compares all six collections.

Frequently Asked Questions

Start with how you sit. If you sit upright to read, talk or work, choose a firmer, shallower seat with a supportive back. If you curl up or nap, choose a deeper, softer seat. Then check three measurements: seat depth, seat height and back support. Compare them with a couch you already find comfortable, and run a ten-minute sit test if you can. Our collections cover the range, from the firm, upright Neptune to the soft, deep Ciello XL and Gaia XL, so you can choose the feel that matches your habits before you worry about color or style.

It depends on your legs and your posture. A shallower seat lets shorter people lean back with their feet on the floor, and a deeper seat gives more room to curl up or sit cross-legged. Our usable seat depths run from 21.7 inches on Ciello Regular and 22.4 inches on Neptune to 26.4 inches on Ciello XL and Cassini and 27.3 inches on Atmosphere with the square back. These are measured with the back cushions in place, and the deepest sofa is not automatically the most comfortable.

Neither is better for everyone. Firm seats give structure and make it easier to sit upright, while soft seats feel plush and relaxed. Back support also depends on the height and angle of the backrest, not only on the cushion. For extra upper-back support we suggest Neptune with optional headrests, Ciello XL with high angled backs or Atmosphere with higher rounded backs. These are comfort recommendations based on our product experience, not medical advice, so test a sofa for ten minutes if you can.

Ours do. All of our collections ship free across every US state except Hawaii, Alaska and the Virgin Islands, with no order minimum, and our product pages describe that shipping as fast. For comfort, you can choose from firm and upright to soft and deep, and the cushion and backrest covers are removable and machine washable on a cold, gentle cycle. On Ciello, Gaia, Atmosphere and Cassini you can also order replacement covers. Delivery estimates appear at checkout and depend on the products you choose, so we do not publish a single delivery time for every sofa.

Compare the numbers and use the trial. Measure the seat depth and height of a couch you like, then compare them with the product page. Order free swatches to feel the fabric, and read our comfort guide for how each collection feels. If it still is not right after it arrives, our 30-day risk-free trial lets you send it back for free, provided you keep the original boxes. A free design consultation can also help you choose between collections before you order.

Neptune is our first recommendation for upright sitting. It has our firmest seat, one of our shallowest seat depths at 22.4 inches, a tall backrest and optional headrests for the upper back and neck. Cassini is a good second choice, with a lower seat height of 17 inches and supportive medium-firm cushioning. Orian also has a firm seat, but its soft back pillows create a more relaxed posture than Neptune, so it suits people who want firm support underneath and a softer lean.

Some do. Ciello and Gaia use loose foam-and-fiber cushions that may feel slightly firmer when new and gradually relax as the filling settles, so we suggest fluffing them about every week or two. Atmosphere, Cassini, Orian and Neptune use layered-foam seating that is designed to keep a steadier feel. Orian's loose back pillows may still need an occasional fluff. Normal wear affects every upholstered piece, and long-term comfort also depends on how you use and care for the sofa.
