Quick answer: A well-maintained Cozey sofa is designed to last 7–10 years or more, with a frame engineered to last over 20 years. But not every part of a sofa ages at the same rate, and not every sofa requires the same level of maintenance.
At Cozey, we believe furniture should be made to last. We also believe customers deserve to understand exactly what that means.
How long will the cushions maintain their comfort? Will the fabric start to pill? What happens after five or ten years? And what can you do if part of your sofa eventually wears out?
These are fair questions, and we want to answer them openly.
The reality is that a sofa's lifespan depends on three things: how it's constructed, how it's used, and how it's maintained.
Here's what we've learned from designing, manufacturing, testing, and improving our sofas over the years.

How Long Is a Cozey Sofa Expected to Last?
Different components of a Cozey sofa have different expected lifespans.
| Component | Expected Lifespan | What You Should Know |
|---|---|---|
| Frame and structural support | 20+ years | Built with solid wood and metal sinuous springs in high-stress areas |
| High-density foam | 10+ years for foam cores in loose-cushion collections; approximately 7–10 years for layered foam seating | Designed to resist premature deterioration |
| Fiber-filled cushions | 5–10+ years | Regular fluffing is essential to maintaining shape and comfort |
| Fabric upholstery | 7–10 years | Depends on usage, fabric choice, and maintenance |
| Overall sofa | 7–10+ years | Replaceable components can help extend its useful life |
These are Cozey's expected lifespans under normal residential use with appropriate maintenance, not guaranteed lifespans. Actual performance varies with usage, environmental conditions, and care.
The most important distinction is that the frame is rarely what determines when a Cozey sofa needs attention.
In our experience, the more common concerns relate to cushion maintenance and fabric appearance. And those are components we've intentionally made replaceable.
Our Frames Are Engineered to Last Over 20 Years
Every Cozey sofa is built around a sturdy frame combining solid wood construction and metal sinuous springs in the areas where people sit and where the greatest daily stress occurs.
Sinuous springs are commonly used in upholstered furniture to provide seating support, distribute weight, and maintain structural performance.
Our modular approach also changes how a sofa is constructed.
A conventional three-seater sofa may use one large frame spanning all three seating positions. At Cozey, a three-seater consists of three individual seating modules.
Each seat has its own supporting structure, rather than depending entirely on one large frame.
Every Cozey seating base is tested to support more than 600 pounds.
This construction is one reason we're confident in the expected longevity of our frames.
Based on the issues reported to our Customer Happiness team, frame failures are exceptionally uncommon. Most long-term maintenance concerns involve softer components such as cushions or upholstery.
Our frames are designed to remain structurally sound well beyond the period when a customer might choose to refresh a cushion or fabric cover.
It's worth distinguishing expected lifespan from warranty coverage: Cozey sofas carry a five-year limited warranty against qualifying manufacturing defects. A frame's expected 20+ year life is not a 20-year warranty.
Not All Cozey Cushions Are Built the Same Way
One of the biggest factors influencing how a Cozey sofa ages is the type of seating construction.
We offer two approaches because customers have different preferences for comfort, appearance, and maintenance.
Fiber-filled cushions: Ciello, Ciello XL, Gaia, and Gaia XL
These collections are designed to deliver a softer, more enveloping, cloud-like sitting experience.
They use high-density foam surrounded by softer fiber fill to create a plush appearance and comfortable, relaxed seating.
It's this combination that makes the cushions feel inviting and gives them their signature look.
However, there is a trade-off.
Fiber-filled cushions require occasional fluffing to maintain their shape and comfort.
When you sit on a cushion, the fibers compress. Regular fluffing redistributes the fill, restores volume, and helps prevent it from staying compacted.
If a cushion is consistently used without being fluffed, the fiber can eventually become permanently compressed. At that point, fluffing may no longer fully restore its original shape, even if the high-density foam inside remains in good condition.
This is an important distinction: a cushion that looks deflated doesn't necessarily have deteriorating foam. Often, the surrounding fiber fill is what needs attention.
How often should you fluff Cozey cushions?
We recommend:
Every one to two weeks, depending on how frequently your sofa is used.
Spending approximately one minute fluffing each loose cushion.
Rotating cushions between frequently used and less frequently used seating positions, where the configuration allows.
Fluffing sooner if you notice the cushions beginning to lose their shape.
With appropriate maintenance, we expect these cushions to remain comfortable and attractive for 10 years or longer.
Cushions that are rarely fluffed compress faster and may need replacing sooner, in some cases around the five-year mark. Individual cushions can be replaced without replacing the sofa.
This maintenance requirement isn't unique to Cozey. Sofas that combine foam with loose fiber or feather-like cushioning typically need periodic attention to maintain their plush appearance.
We believe the additional comfort is worth that small amount of maintenance. But we also understand that not every customer wants to fluff cushions regularly.
That's why we offer other seating constructions.
Lower-maintenance foam seating: Atmosphere, Neptune, Orian, and Cassini
Our Atmosphere, Neptune, Orian, and Cassini collections use layers of high-density foam for their seating surfaces rather than relying on the same loose fiber-filled seat-cushion construction.
This creates a different comfort experience.
The seating is designed to maintain more consistent support and shape with less routine maintenance.
The high-density foam layers are expected to provide approximately 7–10 years of comfortable seating under normal use.
That doesn't mean the foam will feel exactly the same after a decade. Some gradual softening is normal.
But customers generally don't need to follow the same regular fluffing routine required by our plush, fiber-filled cushions.
In our experience, these collections have relatively few cushion-maintenance complaints.
Which Cozey seating construction is right for you?
| Feature | Ciello & Gaia Collections | Atmosphere, Neptune, Orian & Cassini |
|---|---|---|
| Comfort experience | Soft, plush, cloud-like | More consistent foam-based support |
| Appearance | Relaxed and enveloping | More structured and shape-retaining |
| Cushion maintenance | Fluff every 1–2 weeks | Minimal routine fluffing |
| Expected cushion longevity | 5–10+ years, depending on care | Approximately 7–10 years |
| Best suited for | Customers prioritizing plush comfort and appearance | Customers seeking lower-maintenance seating |
Neither approach is inherently better. The right choice depends on the comfort experience you prefer and how much maintenance you're willing to do.
Why We Upgraded All Our Cushion Foam to Higher Density
In 2023, we made an important change to our sofa construction.
We upgraded the foam used in our sofas from D28 to D35 high-density foam.
The objective was straightforward: improve long-term durability without changing the comfort experience customers love.
Higher-density foam generally offers greater resistance to long-term deterioration when other foam characteristics are appropriately controlled.
We selected durable, high-density foam materials informed by testing in mattress applications, including materials used in mattresses offered with 15-year warranties.
This gave us additional confidence in the long-term performance of the foam itself.
We expect the high-density foam cores used in our loose-cushion collections to last more than ten years with normal use.
We haven't yet quantified exactly how many additional years the upgrade from D28 to D35 provides. What we can say is that we made the change specifically to improve durability while preserving the same feel.
Another improvement in 2026: More support beneath the cushions
In 2026, we made an additional upgrade to our Ciello, Ciello XL, Gaia, and Gaia XL collections.
We added 1.5 inches of high-density foam above the wooden base, beneath the loose seat cushions.
This provides additional support and helps maintain seating comfort even when the fiber-filled cushions haven't been fluffed recently.
It also complements the comfort of properly maintained cushions.
It doesn't eliminate the need for fluffing, but it helps reduce the impact of cushion compression on the overall sitting experience.
These improvements reflect something we take seriously: continuously improving our products based on how customers actually use them.
How Long Do Cozey Sofa Fabrics Last?
Our current sofa fabrics are selected with an expected lifespan of approximately 7–10 years under normal residential use with appropriate care.
We evaluate fabric durability using several industry testing methods.
Our requirements include:
| Fabric Test | Cozey Standard or Approach |
|---|---|
| Abrasion resistance | More than 15,000 double rubs |
| Pilling resistance | Target ratings above 4–4.5 out of 5 |
| Seam slippage | Tested for resistance to seam movement |
| Tear strength | Tested for resistance to tearing |
Double-rub testing measures how well a fabric withstands repeated abrasion under standardized conditions. It's one useful indicator of suitability for everyday upholstery.
However, abrasion results alone don't establish how many years a fabric will last in someone's home.
Real-world longevity also depends on the fabric construction, cleaning habits, pets, sunlight exposure, and how heavily particular areas are used.
Does Cozey fabric pill?
All upholstered fabrics can develop some pilling over time.
Pilling occurs when small fibers collect on the fabric's surface through friction and everyday use.
A small amount of pilling is normal and doesn't necessarily indicate that the fabric is defective.
However, we also want to be transparent about our own experience.
Some of our original fabrics were more prone to excessive pilling than we wanted.
We heard that feedback from customers, and in 2024, we discontinued those earlier fabrics and moved toward fabrics with tighter weaves and less surface fuzz.
We also strengthened our fabric-performance requirements.
Our current fabrics are designed to deliver better long-term performance, although occasional pilling can still occur.
Light fabric shaving is a simple way to remove surface pills and maintain a fresh appearance.
How should you maintain your Cozey sofa fabric?
Our recommendations are straightforward:
Wash removable covers as needed. For routine deep cleaning, approximately every one to two years is a reasonable starting point, depending on use.
Follow the care label. All current Cozey sofa fabrics can be machine-washed when the cover is removable, but washing and drying instructions must be followed.
Use a fabric shaver when needed. Gentle fabric shaving can remove surface pilling and refresh the appearance of the upholstery.
Trim snags carefully. If a thread is snagged, carefully cut the protruding thread rather than pulling it.
Address spills promptly. Proper cleaning can help prevent spills from becoming permanent stains.
There is one important distinction regarding removable covers.
The seat and back cushion covers on Orian and Neptune are removable and machine-washable, but their arm and base upholstery covers are not removable or machine-washable.
Our other collections also have their own specific cover configurations, so customers should always consult the relevant product's care instructions.
What We've Improved Since Launching Cozey
One of our core beliefs is that a good product should continue getting better.
We don't believe in pretending that every early version of a product was perfect.
We've listened to customer feedback and made meaningful improvements to materials, manufacturing, fabric selection, and assembly.
Some of the biggest changes include:
| When | What We Improved | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | Upgraded foam from D28 to D35 | Better expected long-term durability without changing the comfort experience |
| 2024 | Discontinued earlier fabrics prone to excessive pilling | Improved fabric performance and appearance over time |
| 2026 | Added 1.5 inches of foam support beneath Ciello and Gaia cushions, including XL | Improved support and reduced sensitivity to cushion compression |
We've also made improvements to our manufacturing processes and assembly systems.
More reliable assembly and stronger connections
Because our sofas are modular, the connections between individual pieces are especially important.
Earlier generations occasionally experienced connector-alignment issues, connectors that were too difficult to engage, or connectors that could separate under tension.
We've invested in improved manufacturing machinery to achieve more consistent connector alignment.
We've also upgraded connection designs to make modules easier to connect and more secure once assembled.
Alongside these changes, we've strengthened manufacturing quality-control processes to reduce missing hardware and components.
More removable and replaceable fabric covers
We've expanded the ability to remove, wash, and replace upholstery components across our collections.
For Atmosphere, Gaia, Ciello, and Cassini, customers can change their sofa's fabric covers, allowing them to refresh the appearance or choose a different fabric.
Across our sofa collections, seating covers are designed to be removable and machine-washable, subject to each product's specific care instructions.
These improvements matter because durability isn't only about preventing wear.
It's also about making furniture easier to maintain, refresh, and repair when wear eventually happens.
A sofa purchased in an earlier year may therefore have different fabrics, foam, connectors, or support features from the latest version of the same collection.
We encourage customers researching older reviews to consider when that particular product was purchased.
That doesn't invalidate the experiences of earlier customers. It's simply important context when evaluating the products we offer today.
What Happens When Part of Your Sofa Wears Out?
This is one of the biggest advantages of our modular design.
You don't need to replace an entire Cozey sofa because one cushion becomes worn or one fabric cover is damaged.
We designed our sofas so that individual components can be replaced.
Customers can purchase replacement cushions, fabric covers, modules, and other parts through the Modules & Replacements section of our website.
If the part they're looking for isn't listed online, our Customer Happiness team can help identify the appropriate replacement.
Our commitment to modularity extends beyond the initial purchase. We want customers to be able to maintain and adapt their sofas over time, including older configurations.
Replacing fabric instead of buying a new sofa
For collections with replaceable upholstery covers, a new set of covers can cost approximately 25% of the price of an equivalent new sofa, depending on the model and configuration.
That means a customer with a structurally sound sofa and comfortable cushions can refresh the upholstery at a fraction of the cost of replacing the whole piece.
If the frame and other components remain in good condition, new covers can potentially provide many additional years of use.
And if only one cushion or module needs attention, customers may be able to replace just that component.
We believe that's a more practical approach to long-term furniture ownership.
A Cozey Sofa Can Change With Your Life
Durability isn't only about how long a sofa survives.
It's also about whether it continues to fit your needs as your life changes.
One of the most encouraging things we've seen is customers returning years after their original purchase to expand or reconfigure their sofas.
Someone who bought a Ciello several years ago might return to purchase another seating module, add a corner to create a sectional, or purchase additional arms to transform their existing modules into another seating configuration.
Instead of starting over, they're building on the furniture they already own.
We've also seen continued interest in older Ciello sofas on secondhand marketplaces such as Facebook Marketplace.
Although resale asking prices don't establish actual resale values, the presence of older sofas in the secondhand market suggests there is continued interest in these products.
For us, that's an important part of sustainable product design: creating furniture that can stay useful as households, spaces, and preferences evolve.
What Should a Cozey Sofa Look Like After 10 Years?
Let's take a realistic example.
Imagine purchasing a Ciello today and using it as your primary living-room sofa for the next ten years.
You regularly fluff the cushions, rotate them when possible, clean the upholstery appropriately, and address minor fabric wear as it occurs.
Here's what we would expect.
The frame: It should remain structurally sound and continue to support the sofa comfortably.
The foam: The high-density foam should maintain useful support, although some gradual softening is normal.
The fiber fill: The cushions may feel softer and look more relaxed than when they were new. Regular fluffing should help maintain their shape, but individual cushions may eventually require replacement.
The fabric: Frequently used areas may show some visible wear, even with proper care.
The overall sofa: With appropriate maintenance, we would expect it to remain attractive, comfortable, and suitable as the primary sofa in a living room.
It may not look or feel exactly as it did on delivery day. But a well-maintained sofa should age gracefully.
And if one or two components begin to show noticeable wear, those components can be replaced without discarding the rest of the sofa.
That's the experience we're designing for.
These expectations are based on our construction choices and experience with our products, not a guarantee that every sofa will reach the same condition after a decade.
What Does Cozey's Warranty Cover?
All Cozey sofas come with a five-year limited warranty covering qualifying manufacturing defects that arise under normal use, with appropriate care and maintenance.
For example, structural damage caused by a manufacturing defect is covered, and the affected frame component can be replaced.
Other concerns, including cushion flattening, fabric pilling, or snagging, are evaluated based on the nature of the issue, how long the product has been owned, its use and maintenance history, and whether a manufacturing defect is present.
Some gradual softening, light pilling, and normal wear are expected characteristics of upholstered furniture.
These changes don't automatically indicate a manufacturing defect.
What about accidental damage?
For customers who want additional protection, we offer CozeyProtection+.
This optional protection plan is designed to cover qualifying accidental damage that falls outside the standard manufacturing warranty, including incidents involving spills, pets, children, or accidental damage to the frame.
For covered incidents under CozeyProtection+, eligible replacement parts or modules are subject to a $49 flat fee per part or module, alongside the plan’s terms, eligibility limits, and three-year coverage period.
The standard warranty and Cozey Protection+ serve different purposes:
Standard warranty: Protection against qualifying manufacturing defects.
Cozey Protection+: Additional protection against qualifying accidental damage.
Customers should refer to the specific terms of their warranty and protection plan for coverage details, exclusions, and eligibility.
Our Philosophy: Built to Last, Designed to Evolve
At Cozey, we don't believe the life of a sofa should end when a cushion wears out or a fabric cover starts to show its age.
That's why we invest in durable frames, high-density foam, tested upholstery materials, and modular designs.
It's also why we've continued to improve our products over time, from upgrading our foam and fabrics to strengthening our connectors and making more components removable and replaceable.
No upholstered sofa is completely maintenance-free, and no fabric or cushion will remain brand-new forever.
Our goal is to make that maintenance manageable and give customers the flexibility to replace individual components when needed.
Because the best sofa isn't necessarily the one that never changes.
It's the one that can keep being part of your home as your life changes.
