Green Beds: Sage on the Cozey Ara Bed

What our one green bed looks like, what it is made of, how to care for it and which headboard and frame choices go with it.

A Cozey Ara bed in Sage

Short answer: Our Ara bed comes in one green: Sage, a deep green in Performance Chenille, rated at 48,000 Martindale rubs. The frame and headboard covers are removable and can be machine washed, and Sage sits quietly beside off-white linens in a calm bedroom. We keep this guide short on purpose, because Sage is our only green bed color and we describe it only as our product page and guides do.

A bed is the largest piece of color in a bedroom, so it helps to know what a color looks like, how its fabric wears and how it cleans before you choose it. The sections below cover each of those points, plus the headboard and frame choices that go with Sage.

Does the Ara bed come in green?

Yes, in one shade. Sage is the only green on the Ara bed. The table shows it beside the other Ara colors, so you can judge it against the alternatives.

Chocolate, Mocha, Harbor Blue, Cerulean, Night Sky and Cypress Green are sofa colors and are not offered on the Ara bed. For a green bedroom with no other color competing, Sage is the choice.

What is Sage made of, and how does it feel?

Sage is Performance Chenille, a soft, textured fabric that we rate at 48,000 Martindale rubs. The Martindale test rubs a fabric against an abrasive surface until it shows wear, and a higher number means more abrasion resistance. A headboard sees less rubbing than a sofa seat, so a moderate count can be enough for an adult bedroom.

The same chenille also comes in Cobblestone and Espresso, so one fabric spans deep, mid and dark tones. Order our free swatches before you decide. A green reads differently in your own light, next to your own walls and bedding.

How do you care for a Sage cover?

The cover on the frame and the headboard comes off. For chenille, our care steps are to machine wash the cover cold on a gentle cycle, air dry it, and avoid wringing, bleach and high temperatures. The foam, plywood panels, steel frame and hardware underneath do not go in the washing machine, so only the cover is washed. Washable does not mean stain-proof, so wipe spills quickly.

Compatible replacement covers are sold separately. If you want a different color later, you can change the cover without replacing the steel frame. Our Ara customization guide explains how the headboard, frame and covers fit together.

For households with animals, our own assessment of Performance Chenille is Good for pets. Claws can occasionally catch it, so it is less scratch-resistant than Aquaforte Velvet.

What can you choose with Sage?

After color, the Ara bed asks for four more choices, and they change the look more than the color does.

  • Size: Full, Queen or King.
  • Frame: Round or Square, with no storage or with four side-access drawers. A Queen with storage holds about 9.2 cubic feet across the four drawers. Our Ara storage guide lists the drawer sizes.
  • Headboard: Round, Square, Pillow or Extended.
  • Seam finish: Regular Seam, French Seam or Channel Tufted. Channel tufting is offered only on the Extended headboard, and Sage is one of the colors it comes in.

The headboard decides how much wall width and floor depth the bed needs. These Queen sizes come from our product guides.

Which colors work with Sage in a calm bedroom?

A calm palette keeps contrast low, so nothing competes for attention. As general advice, not a product specification, choose two or three close tones and let texture add interest.

  • Light and quiet: Sage paired with off-white linens, which is how our headboard guide describes it: muted and grounded.
  • Soft and layered: Sage with warm neutrals such as Silken Sand or Flax Haven in the curtains and throws.
  • Bolder: Sage with Espresso or Cobblestone accents, if the room has plenty of daylight.

Our headboard fabric guide goes through the whole Ara palette.

How do you keep a Sage bedroom minimalist?

Keep the pieces few and the tones close. A Round or Square headboard with a Regular Seam gives the cleanest silhouette. Add one of our mattresses and a pair of nightstands from our bedroom collection, and keep the bedding in one color family. The main steel frame uses hand-fastened and clip-on connections, and the product page lists tool-free assembly as a key feature. Storage drawers need the included Allen key. Our guide to bed frames that are easy to assemble covers assembly in more detail.

Can you match the bed to a green sofa?

Sage also comes on several of our sofas and chairs, so you can repeat the color in the living room. Our guide to green sofas and sofa beds lists where it is offered, and each product shows its colors on its own page.

Our recommendation

Choose Sage if you want a deep green that stays quiet, and choose by room size for the rest.

  • Small bedroom: a Round or Square headboard, which needs the least depth, in Sage with Regular Seam.
  • Sitting up to read: the Pillow headboard, which adds about 4.5 inches of depth.
  • Large bedroom or a statement wall: the Extended headboard with channel tufting in Sage.
  • Extra storage: the four-drawer frame, with room beside the bed to open the drawers.

Before you order, check that your mattress suits the frame with our mattress compatibility guide, and read our warranty terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Sage is the only green on our Ara bed, and it is a deep green in Performance Chenille, rated at 48,000 Martindale rubs. The other Ara colors are neutrals and darks: Flax Haven, Silken Sand, Snowdrift, Cloud, Crumble, Cobblestone and Espresso. Sage also comes in the same chenille as Cobblestone and Espresso, which gives you one fabric in three tones. Order our free swatches to see the green in your own bedroom light.

Keep contrast low and choose two or three close tones, then let texture add interest. On our Ara bed, Sage is a deep green that feels muted and grounded when it is paired with off-white linens. Warm neutrals such as Silken Sand or Flax Haven suit the curtains and throws, and Espresso or Cobblestone can add a darker accent in a room with plenty of daylight. This is general advice, not a rule. We suggest ordering free swatches, because a green reads differently in your own light next to your walls and bedding.

Sage is Performance Chenille, a soft, textured fabric that we rate at 48,000 Martindale rubs. The Martindale test counts how many rubs a fabric takes before it shows wear, so a higher number means more abrasion resistance. Our Cobblestone and Espresso Ara covers use the same chenille. A headboard sees less friction than a sofa seat, so a moderate count can be enough for an adult bedroom. Our bouclé is rated at 15,000 and our Aquaforte Velvet at more than 200,000, which shows where chenille sits in our range.

Yes. The covers on the frame and headboard are removable. For chenille, machine wash the cover cold on a gentle cycle, air dry it, and avoid wringing, bleach and high temperatures. Only the cover is washable. The foam, plywood panels, steel frame and hardware underneath cannot go in the washing machine. Washing also cannot repair a thread that a claw has pulled, and washable does not mean stain-proof, so wipe spills quickly. Compatible replacement covers are sold separately if you want to change the color or refresh a worn one later.

You can build one from our bedroom collection rather than buy a fixed set. Start with an Ara bed in Sage, with a Round or Square headboard and a Regular Seam for the cleanest lines. Add one of our mattresses and a pair of nightstands, then keep the bedding in one color family such as off-white. Because the Ara system is modular, you can change the headboard, the cover or the storage later without replacing the whole bed, so the room can change as your taste does.

Tool-free frames that arrive in several boxes are the easiest to assemble alone. Our Ara steel frame comes in four sections, and the main frame uses hand-fastened and clip-on connections, so it goes together without tools. If you choose the storage frame, the drawers need the Allen key that is included. We do not publish a solo assembly time, so read the assembly guide before delivery and wait until every box has arrived before you start. Our bed frame guide explains what to look for.

In our own assessment, Performance Chenille is Good for pets. Its textured surface hides hair and small marks, and the removable cover can be machine washed to lift hair and everyday dirt. Claws can occasionally catch chenille, so it is less scratch-resistant than our Aquaforte Velvet, which we rate Excellent for pets but which is not offered in green. Aquaforte Velvet is offered on the Ara in Crumble. If a pet sleeps on the bed, choose by how often it scratches and how easily you can wash the cover.

Yes. Compatible replacement covers are sold separately for the frame and the headboard, so you can switch to a different available color without replacing the steel foundation. If you start with a neutral and want Sage later, or the reverse, you change only the covers. If you want a different headboard shape, such as Round to Pillow, you buy the new headboard and its covers. Availability and compatibility can change, so check the product page or contact our Customer Happiness team before you order.
