Finding a rug you love online is the easy part. The harder part is deciding whether it will look right in your room, feel comfortable underfoot, and be practical to clean. A product photograph can show you the design, but it can't always tell you how the fabric feels, whether the backing is cushioned, or how much work is involved in washing a larger size. We think those questions deserve clear answers before you place an order.
Here's what we'd look for when buying a washable area rug online in the United States.

Decide what the rug needs to do
Start by thinking about the room rather than browsing patterns immediately. Is the rug going beneath a sectional in a family room? Will it sit in a bedroom where you walk barefoot? Is it going into a busy entryway or a smaller apartment? The answers can help you choose a suitable size and construction. A living-room rug might need to connect several furniture pieces visually.
A bedroom rug is often about adding softness. A dining-room rug needs enough room for chairs to move, while a hallway runner should fit comfortably without blocking doors. We recommend identifying your two or three most important requirements before shopping. Perhaps you care most about a beautiful design, comfortable cushioning, or being able to machine-wash the surface.
Once you know what matters, it's easier to avoid being distracted by a photograph that looks beautiful but doesn't fit your lifestyle.
Learn to read product photographs
A rug is a large visual element in a room, and photography can change how you perceive it. The same pattern might appear subtle in a bright, spacious living room and more expressive in a compact apartment. Pay attention to the scale of the furniture in the images. A wide-angle photograph can make a rug look smaller or larger than you might expect.
We'd also look for close-up photographs of the fabric, not just full-room images. The surface texture matters, particularly when deciding between a lower-profile washable rug and something with a thicker, longer pile. Cozey washable rugs use soft polyester chenille with digitally printed designs. Our printing creates visual depth, while the underlying fabric has a consistent physical texture.
So if a pattern appears faded, layered, or vintage-inspired in a photograph, that effect is part of the design rather than separate raised areas of pile. Understanding that helps you know what will arrive.
What if you can't order a rug swatch?
Not every online rug collection offers fabric samples. We don't currently offer physical Cozey rug swatches, so we've focused on giving customers more ways to understand the colors before purchasing. Our product pages include lighting visualizations that show how the rug may look under different lighting conditions. We recommend reviewing these alongside the main product photographs.
If you're trying to coordinate with a sofa, look at the rug's overall color family rather than matching individual pixels on your screen. A warm neutral may appear different beside a gray sofa than it does beside a beige one. And remember that a room with large windows will affect a rug's appearance differently from a room primarily lit by lamps.
We'd rather explain that up front than suggest a color will look exactly the same in every home.
Measure with the furniture in place
Before ordering, put down your phone and grab a measuring tape. The rug's size should relate to your sofa, bed, or dining table—not just the empty floor. For living rooms, we generally like rugs that connect the main seating pieces. In a compact space, the front legs of the sofa might sit on the rug. In a larger room, a more generous rug can extend beneath the entire seating arrangement.
For bedrooms, think about how much rug you'll see along the sides and foot of the bed. Cozey washable rugs come in five sizes, from 3' × 5' accent rugs and 2.5' × 8' runners to 9' × 12' area rugs. If you're unsure between two sizes, use painter's tape to outline both options. You'll get a much more accurate impression than trying to estimate from photographs.
Also check clearance around doors and movable furniture. A rug that looks perfect when nothing is moving may be less practical if it interferes with a door or chair.
Check the entire construction
One of the most important details to understand when buying a rug online is what's included underneath it. Some rugs rely entirely on their fabric or backing. Others are designed as separate layers. At Cozey, the washable chenille layer sits on an included cushioned, non-slip modular pad.
The pad features an EVA cushioning core with TPR grip material on both sides. This helps keep the pad positioned against the floor and the washable rug layer positioned above it. The rug's reinforced TPR corners add stability. There's no need for clips, Velcro, or adhesives.
Together, the rug and pad measure approximately 13 mm thick. We think product pages should make these details easy to understand. When you're choosing a rug for a hard floor, the quality of the cushioning and backing can affect the experience just as much as the pattern.
Know the cleaning requirements before you order
One of the best things about a washable rug is the ability to clean the fabric layer when needed. But make sure you understand the care instructions for the size you're purchasing. Our smaller Cozey rugs can be washed in standard home washing machines. An 8' × 10' requires a machine with at least 4.5 cubic feet of capacity and no central agitator.
The 9' × 12' needs a commercial washer rated for 60–80 lb loads. The removable rug layer can be tumble-dried on low heat or air-dried. The cushioned pad is spot-clean only. If you live in a building with shared laundry, confirm that the machines can accommodate your chosen rug.
We wouldn't assume that a large washable rug can fit into every apartment washer simply because the fabric folds. And if you have a pet, remember that while our chenille fabric has held up well to everyday use, it can still collect hair and may need regular vacuuming.
Plan for delivery to your address
Ordering an area rug online can be convenient, but the details of delivery depend on your location. Cozey offers standard free shipping across eligible US destinations, with exclusions including Alaska and Hawaii and possible limitations or additional charges in certain areas. The estimated delivery date depends on the product's availability and your address.
We recommend reviewing the information on the product page and at checkout. For apartment buildings, standard delivery is generally to the entrance or lobby rather than inside your unit. If you need help bringing a package upstairs, arrange that before delivery. Our washable rugs arrive folded in one box with their modular pad components, rather than as a large rigid rug-and-backing assembly.
That helps make the package more manageable when it arrives.
What happens after you unbox the rug?
When you open your rug, you'll find the washable chenille layer and the modular pad pieces. Assemble the pad by connecting the pieces like a puzzle, then lay the rug over it. One person can complete the setup without tools or adhesives. Because the rug arrives folded, it may have visible creases initially.
That's normal. They usually relax within a few days, although some can take one to two weeks. You can gently steam the rug to help smooth more noticeable creases, keeping the steamer moving rather than concentrating heat in one spot. We recommend allowing the rug time to settle before judging its final appearance.
Understand the return policy before purchasing
A rug can look different once it's in your room. That's why we think return conditions should be easy to understand before ordering. Cozey offers a 30-day return period, with eligible returns subject to the current policy. Keeping the original box and packaging is important.
If you decide to return an item without its original packaging or it has significant damage, fees or other limitations may apply under the policy.
You can review the details on our US returns page.
Our rugs also come with a five-year limited warranty for eligible manufacturing defects, which is separate from the return policy. We'd encourage anyone shopping online to read both before making a final decision.
Use reviews for the right reasons
Customer reviews can be helpful, especially when you're buying something you can't touch beforehand. But we'd pay attention to the details rather than just the overall rating. Look for comments about whether the rug feels soft, how it sits on the floor, whether the color matched expectations, and what happened after washing. Photos from actual homes can also be useful.
They show how a design looks in different room sizes, against different flooring, and with different styles of furniture. We think reviews are most helpful when they give you a realistic picture of everyday use—not just an enthusiastic first impression.
A more confident way to shop for a rug
Buying a rug online should feel exciting. The right design can bring an entire room together, and you should be able to choose it with a clear understanding of how it will look, feel, and function. Measure the space, explore the colors under different lighting, check the construction, and understand the cleaning requirements. Then give yourself permission to choose something you really love.
