A great bed should feel sturdy, suit your bedroom and reflect your personal style. It should also be practical to get into your home, assemble, clean and maintain.
Yet many beds require customers to choose between those qualities.
You might find an upholstered bed with the headboard you love but the wrong frame shape. Another might have built-in storage but only come in one design. And some beds look beautiful but use fixed upholstery that is difficult to remove or clean.
At Cozey, we wanted to rethink the experience of choosing a bed.
When developing our Ara Upholstered Bed, we focused on four equally important objectives:
- Structural stability and durability: A sturdy foundation engineered for everyday residential use.
- Compact packaging and practical delivery: Modular components that are easier to bring into homes with narrow hallways or staircases.
- Simpler assembly, disassembly and moving: A frame designed to be put together and taken apart in manageable sections.
- Personalisation: The ability to choose a bed frame, headboard, storage configuration, fabric and colour that suit your individual preferences.
We also wanted Ara to carry over some of the advantages customers know from our sofas.
That includes flexible design choices, familiar Cozey upholstery fabrics and removable, machine-washable covers.
We didn't want to build simply another upholstered bed. We wanted a bed system that customers could make their own.
This guide explores how Ara works, what makes the frame sturdy and what to know about its design, maintenance and expected durability.

Why Did Cozey Design Ara as a Customisable Bed System?
A bedroom is one of the most personal rooms in a home.
Some customers prefer softer shapes and neutral colours. Others want bold textures, a wide headboard or clean architectural lines.
Some need extra under-bed storage, while others prefer the simpler appearance of a non-storage frame.
We believe customers should be able to make those choices independently where the product allows.
Going Beyond a Fixed Bed Design
A conventional upholstered bed often comes as one predetermined combination of headboard and frame.
You may be able to select a colour, but the overall design remains fixed.
We wanted Ara to offer something different.
Customers can choose the exterior shape of the bed frame, select a compatible headboard and decide whether storage is important to them.
Then they can personalise the upholstery.
This approach creates a much broader range of bedroom possibilities than simply choosing between several fabric colours.
Bringing Our Sofa Philosophy Into the Bedroom
Our modular sofas shaped the way we approach product design.
Customers value being able to select how their furniture looks and functions.
They also appreciate removable upholstery, washable covers and components that are practical to maintain.
We wanted Ara to bring those qualities into the bedroom.
For us, this was just as important as the steel frame.
A bed should be structurally reliable, but it should also reflect the person who lives with it.
How Can You Personalise the Ara Bed?
Ara Upholstered offers several layers of customisation.
Choose the Bed-Frame Shape
Customers can choose between two main exterior frame styles.
- Round offers curved edges and a softer, more sculptural appearance.
- Square offers straighter lines and a more structured design.
Both use the Ara underlying structural system.
This allows customers to choose the visual language they prefer without requiring a different approach to supporting the mattress.
Choose Storage or Non-Storage
Both Round and Square upholstered frames are available with or without storage.
The storage version includes four side-access drawers, two on each side.
We chose this arrangement because the drawers can be opened without lifting the mattress platform.
You can retrieve a doona cover while your partner is sleeping or access clothing without removing the bedding.
The non-storage version provides a simpler frame configuration for customers who don't need integrated drawers.
We wanted the storage decision to be based on how customers use their bedroom — not dictated entirely by the frame shape they prefer.
Choose Your Headboard
Ara Upholstered offers four headboard styles.
| Headboard | Appearance and design |
|---|---|
| Round | Curved, soft-edged silhouette |
| Square | Straight, minimal geometric shape |
| Pillow | An upholstered design with a softer pillow-like appearance |
| Extended | A wider headboard with a more prominent design presence |
Compatible upholstered headboards and frames can be combined within the same size.
For example, customers can select a Round frame and a Square headboard, or pair a simple frame with an Extended headboard.
This flexibility was an important part of our design brief.
Choose Your Fabric and Colour
Ara Upholstered uses fabrics from the same familiar Cozey upholstery family used across our sofa collections.
Depending on the component and current assortment, customers can choose different colours, textures and selected finishing details.
The goal is to make the bed feel coordinated with the room rather than forcing customers into one predetermined combination.
Not every fabric or finish is offered on every component, so customers should check the current Australian configurator for available options.
Removable and Machine-Washable Covers
The upholstered frame and supported headboard components have removable, machine-washable fabric covers.
This is one of the features we most wanted to carry over from Cozey's sofas.
An upholstered bed can collect dust, marks and everyday wear over time.
Being able to remove eligible covers and wash them according to their care instructions makes maintenance more practical.
Compatible replacement covers can also allow customers to refresh the appearance of the bed without changing the underlying frame.
We wanted customisation to be useful beyond the day of purchase.
What Is the Ara Bed's Structural Frame Made From?
The Ara Bed uses a black powder-coated steel structural frame.
The support platform is divided into four connected quadrants.
Once assembled, the quadrants form the main foundation for the slats and mattress.
Why Steel?
We selected steel as part of our structural design because we wanted a stable foundation with clearly defined connections.
However, we wouldn't suggest that every metal bed is inherently stronger than every timber bed.
Stability depends on the complete construction, including joints, supports and proper assembly.
For Ara, the steel frame is intended to work together with the legs and mattress-support slats.
Why Four Separate Sections?
We wanted the bed to be easier to transport through real homes.
A one-piece structure can be challenging to move through a narrow hallway, staircase or doorway.
This is particularly relevant in apartments, townhouses and homes with limited access.
By dividing the frame into four components, the structure can be carried into the bedroom and assembled in place.
It can also be taken apart more practically if the customer moves.
However, ease of transport wasn't our only objective.
The connected sections still needed to form a stable foundation for sleeping.
That's why the four-part frame, supporting legs and connections were developed as one system.
How Many Legs Support Ara?
The structure uses four corner legs and four round supporting legs.
These help connect and support the frame quadrants.
The slats are then positioned above the assembled structure.
The exterior upholstery and headboard provide the chosen appearance.
What Is Ara's Weight Capacity in Australia?
The current Ara assembly instructions specify the following maximum total loads.
| Bed size | Maximum total load |
|---|---|
| Full | 272 kg |
| Queen | 363 kg |
| King | 408 kg |
These limits include the mattress and everyone using the bed.
For example, the 363 kg Queen limit is not a per-person rating.
The mattress and occupants all count towards the specified total.
Does a Different Headboard Change the Weight Capacity?
Choosing another compatible upholstered headboard or a different fabric colour doesn't change the stated structural frame capacity.
The headboard is part of the bed's design and upholstered comfort, while the frame and slats provide the primary mattress support.
Does Storage Change the Rating?
The storage and non-storage frame configurations use the same published weight limits.
Storage drawers have separate weight restrictions.
Does the Weight Limit Prove Long-Term Durability?
Not on its own.
Weight capacity is one measure of structural performance.
It doesn't establish how a bed will perform after years of repeated use.
We wouldn't translate the published weight limit into a guarantee that Ara will last a specific number of decades.
Long-term ownership also depends on assembly, maintenance and normal use.
How Does Ara Support the Mattress?
Ara uses 15 mm laminated veneer lumber (LVL) slats.
LVL is engineered timber produced by bonding layers of wood veneer.
The slats are supplied in assemblies connected with nylon straps, helping keep them together during installation.
Slat Dimensions
The Ara technical reference specifications identify approximately:
| Specification | Measurement |
|---|---|
| Slat thickness | 15 mm |
| Slat width | 75 mm |
| Full slat spacing | 67 mm |
| Queen slat spacing | 57 mm |
| King slat spacing | 57 mm |
These details are important when considering mattress compatibility.
Why Does Slat Spacing Matter?
Different mattresses can require different supporting foundations.
For example, certain foam mattresses specify a maximum permitted gap between slats.
Using an unsuitable foundation can affect the way the mattress performs and may have warranty implications.
We recommend checking the mattress manufacturer's requirements before purchasing.
Does Ara Need a Box Spring?
Ara includes its own slatted platform-style foundation.
A conventional box spring generally isn't required.
However, customers should follow the instructions for their chosen mattress.
We wouldn't claim that every mattress or adjustable base is automatically compatible.
Does the Ara Bed Squeak or Creak?
This is a reasonable question when choosing any bed frame.
We're not aware of recurring complaints about Ara squeaking, creaking or feeling unstable based on the feedback currently known to us.
However, no bed can be guaranteed to remain completely silent under every condition.
What Causes Bed-Frame Noise?
Noise may come from loose connections, incorrect assembly, slat movement, uneven floors or contact between adjoining components.
Sometimes the sound comes from the mattress or another piece of furniture.
A headboard touching a wall can also contribute.
What Should You Do if Ara Starts Making Noise?
First, review the assembly instructions.
Confirm that the steel frame sections are correctly connected and the supporting legs are secured.
Check that the slats are positioned properly.
Make sure the bed sits on a stable, level surface.
If the problem continues, contact Cozey's Customer Happiness team.
They can help identify whether adjustment or a replacement component may be required.
We don't recommend using unapproved structural hardware or modifying the frame.
Does Being Modular Make Ara Less Sturdy?
Not inherently.
Modular construction means a product is divided into sections that form the completed structure.
It doesn't automatically establish whether the bed is strong or weak.
The critical considerations are the connections and the completed structural design.
Why We Chose Modularity
We wanted Ara to provide stable mattress support while remaining practical to deliver and move.
The four steel quadrants can be carried separately and assembled in the bedroom.
This can be useful when moving into apartments or navigating homes with narrow access.
What Are the Trade-Offs?
Modular systems have connection points.
Those joints need to be correctly assembled and maintained.
If a component is loose or installed incorrectly, the bed may not feel or function as intended.
That's why customers should use the supplied hardware and follow the assembly instructions carefully.
What About Long-Term Stability?
We selected Ara's frame construction with everyday residential use in mind.
However, we don't currently publish long-term fatigue-test results establishing a specific service life.
We believe it's better to explain the construction and limits accurately than to promise unsupported performance over decades.
Why Was Personalisation as Important as Structural Design?
We don't believe the durability of the underlying structure should be the only consideration in long-term value.
Customers also need to enjoy living with their furniture.
A bed may remain structurally sound even as someone's design preferences change.
That's why we wanted Ara to offer more flexibility than a fixed upholstered design.
A Choice of Shapes
Round and Square frames let customers choose between softer and more structured forms.
Different Headboards
Round, Square, Pillow and Extended headboards allow customers to personalise the bed's appearance independently of the compatible frame.
Storage That Fits the Room
Customers can select storage when drawers are useful or a non-storage frame when a simpler configuration makes more sense.
Fabrics That Can Be Maintained
Removable, machine-washable covers make upholstery care more practical.
Compatible replacement upholstery may also offer an opportunity to refresh the bed later.
A Structural System Designed for Multiple Looks
These options share the same underlying approach to mattress support.
For us, this is what makes Ara a bed system rather than one static product.
We wanted the combination of personalisation, everyday practicality and structural reliability to be the product's defining characteristic.
Does Ara's Storage System Affect Structural Stability?
Ara's storage configuration adds four drawers, with two accessible from each side.
The drawers aren't the main structural support for the mattress.
The steel frame and slats perform that role.
How Much Weight Can the Drawers Hold?
Each drawer has a separate specified maximum load of 9 kg.
This is the capacity for stored belongings.
It should not be confused with the overall Full, Queen or King bed weight limit.
Why Did We Choose Side Drawers?
We wanted customers to access their belongings without lifting the mattress.
This means someone can retrieve a blanket or doona cover without disturbing a partner who is lying on the bed.
The drawers also make it easier to organise belongings into separate compartments.
What Are the Limitations?
Side drawers need floor space to open.
Bedside tables and other furniture can obstruct them.
If one side of the bed sits directly against a wall, the drawers on that side may be difficult or impossible to access.
That's why we recommend measuring the complete room layout before purchasing.
Is Ara Easy to Assemble?
We designed Ara to make the delivery and assembly of a large bed more manageable.
But customers should understand the differences between configurations.
Assembling the Steel Frame
The four frame sections are arranged and connected using the supplied system.
Supporting legs secure the structure.
The exterior upholstered panels then attach through the frame's connection system.
The slats and chosen headboard complete the assembly.
Assembling the Headboard
Different headboard styles have different components and assembly steps.
Some use foldable sections, while others require the connection of multiple panels.
Customers should review the guide for their exact headboard.
What About Storage?
The storage configuration requires assembly of four drawers.
Those drawers have their own panels, rails, wheels, screws and other hardware.
An included Allen key is used for the relevant steps.
It's therefore more accurate to describe Ara as designed for simplified modular assembly than to promise that every component is completely tool-free.
Does Assembly Require Two People?
The instructions recommend two adults for larger pieces.
Some structural steps can be handled individually, but help can make it easier to position heavier or bulkier components safely.
The manual also recommends initially positioning the frame approximately 60 cm from the wall to allow room for headboard installation.
Why Does This Matter for Durability?
Correct assembly is part of maintaining a stable structure.
An incompletely secured connection may produce movement or noise.
We recommend checking all structural components before using the bed.
How Long Should an Ara Bed Last?
We designed Ara for normal residential use with a steel structural frame, LVL slats and modular components.
However, we don't believe customers should be given a fixed lifespan without evidence supporting that figure.
A bed's actual longevity depends on how it is used and maintained.
What Influences Long-Term Durability?
Correct assembly, appropriate mattress support, respecting weight limits and maintaining the connections all matter.
Environmental conditions can also affect materials.
Upholstery may show signs of wear independently of the structural frame.
Does Ara Have a Warranty?
Cozey offers a five-year limited manufacturing warranty, subject to its terms.
That period isn't a prediction that the bed will stop functioning after five years.
For Australian customers, the voluntary warranty operates alongside applicable consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law.
Those statutory rights are not replaced by the manufacturer's warranty terms.
Can You Replace Individual Ara Components?
Yes. Individual replacement parts can be supplied through Cozey's Customer Happiness team.
We believe this is an important advantage of a modular approach.
A bed is made from components that may experience different kinds of wear or damage.
A slat, leg, connector, upholstered panel or another replaceable part may need attention while the rest of the bed remains functional.
What Happens if Something Breaks?
Contact Customer Happiness and explain the issue.
Providing your order details and photographs can help the team identify the affected component.
The appropriate solution will depend on the part involved and the available compatible replacements.
Do Customers Have to Replace the Entire Bed?
Not automatically.
In many situations, replacing a suitable individual component may be more practical than replacing the whole bed.
This is consistent with how we think about modular furniture.
However, component availability and compatibility depend on the model and production generation.
We don't promise that every part will remain available indefinitely.
Why Is Repairability Important?
Long-term ownership involves more than the original purchase.
Furniture can experience wear, damage during moving or changes in appearance.
When parts can be replaced, customers have additional options for maintaining the product.
We believe that's a valuable aspect of thoughtful furniture design.
How Do Washable Covers Contribute to Long-Term Ownership?
A bed's fabric can experience everyday wear even when the underlying steel frame remains sound.
This is why removable upholstery was a key part of Ara's development.
The upholstered frame and supported headboard covers can be removed for washing according to their care instructions.
Why Use Cozey Sofa Fabrics?
We wanted customers to benefit from familiar Cozey upholstery characteristics across more than one room.
The fabrics used in Ara's range share our approach to removable and washable covers.
This makes it easier to maintain the bed's appearance over time.
Can You Change the Colour Later?
Compatible replacement covers may allow customers to refresh the upholstery colour or texture, depending on the available components.
However, availability can vary by size, design and fabric.
Customers should confirm compatibility before ordering replacement upholstery.
Does Washable Mean Maintenance-Free?
No.
Fabrics can still experience staining, fading, pilling and normal wear.
Removable covers make cleaning more practical, but they don't eliminate the need for appropriate care.
Follow the instructions for the selected fabric, and avoid assuming all textiles respond identically to washing.
Is Ara Suitable for Australian Bedrooms?
Ara can be especially appealing for customers who want a customisable upholstered bed that is easier to move in components.
Its modular construction may be useful in apartments, townhouses and homes with tight staircases.
The collection offers Full, Queen and King configurations through Cozey's Australian range, subject to current availability.
Check the Mattress Dimensions Carefully
Australian and North American mattress-size conventions aren't always identical.
Cozey's Australian configurator uses the terms Full, Queen and King.
Customers should check the actual mattress-fit dimensions in centimetres rather than assuming that Full is identical to every Australian Double mattress.
Similarly, the Australian King has dimensions that differ from its North American counterpart.
We recommend verifying the exact fit before purchasing a mattress or frame.
Check the Full Headboard Width
Ara's headboard options aren't all the same width.
An Extended headboard may create a striking appearance but requires more wall space.
This matters especially when bedside tables, windows or doorways limit available room.
Consider Storage Clearance
If selecting a storage frame, plan for the space needed to open its four side drawers.
The bed's external dimensions alone don't establish whether the drawers can operate comfortably.
Who Should Choose Ara?
Ara is worth considering for customers who want more choice than a fixed upholstered-bed design typically provides.
It may be a good fit if you:
- Want to choose between Round and Square frame styles.
- Want to select your own compatible headboard.
- Need a choice between storage and non-storage configurations.
- Prefer familiar Cozey upholstery fabrics in different colours.
- Value removable, machine-washable covers.
- Want a bed with documented structural and weight specifications.
- Need a large piece of furniture that's easier to transport in sections.
- Appreciate the option to obtain individual replacement parts.
When Another Bed Might Make More Sense
If you want a different overall bed height, a particular timber appearance or a specialised adjustable base, another design may better suit your requirements.
Similarly, if your bedroom doesn't provide enough clearance for side drawers, a different storage mechanism may be worth considering.
We don't believe one bed should be presented as the perfect solution for everyone.
The right choice depends on the mattress, bedroom layout, design preferences and practical requirements.
Final Thoughts: A Bed Designed Around You
When we created Ara, we wanted to bring more than a sturdy new bed frame to the market.
We wanted to apply some of the design principles that customers appreciate in our modular sofas.
That meant building furniture around meaningful choices.
Customers should be able to select the bed-frame shape they prefer, pair it with a compatible headboard, decide whether they need storage and choose their upholstery fabric and colour.
We also wanted those fabrics to offer practical benefits after purchase, including removable and machine-washable covers.
At the same time, the bed needed a dependable underlying structure.
That's why we built Ara around a four-part steel frame with supporting legs and LVL slats.
Its modular construction helps make delivery and assembly more manageable.
Its weight capacities are specified for each size.
And individual replacement parts can be supplied through our Customer Happiness team.
We don't promise that the bed will never squeak or that its useful life can be expressed as one guaranteed number of years.
Instead, we believe customers deserve accurate information about construction, maintenance, customisation and long-term ownership.
For us, Ara is more than a bed. It's a personalisable bed system designed to bring together sturdy construction, individual style and the everyday practicality that defines Cozey furniture.
