How to Clean and Maintain a Sleeper Sofa: Covers, Spills and Moving Parts

Sofa beds need a little more thought than an ordinary lounge because the upholstery and moving parts have different jobs. Here is how to maintain Cozey’s Neptune, Orian and Atmosphere Sleeper systems without treating their care instructions as identical.

Short answer: Identify which upholstery components are removable before washing, clean spills according to the selected fabric's care label, remove bedding before closing the sleeper, and only lubricate Neptune or Orian's moving metal joints if they start squeaking. Atmosphere Sleeper requires no routine mechanism lubrication under normal use.

A removable module is not the same thing as a removable upholstery cover. Neptune and Orian can be rearranged modularly, but that does not mean you can take the fabric off every arm or base and put it in the washing machine.

The cleaning sequence after overnight guests

  1. Strip the sleeper. Remove the fitted sheet, flat sheet, mattress topper, comforter and pillows before closing it.
  2. Inspect the fabric. Check for marks, crumbs, moisture and snagged threads; do not force anything caught near a hinge.
  3. Treat stains promptly. Follow the care directions for the exact fabric and avoid testing an unfamiliar cleaner on a prominent area.
  4. Wash eligible covers only. Use the collection- and fabric-specific machine-washing, temperature and drying instructions. Never assume fixed upholstery can be machine-washed.
  5. Dry everything thoroughly. Refit covers according to the assembly/care guide; trapped moisture is not desirable inside upholstered furniture.
  6. Put away clean bedding. If storing sheets, pillows or the topper in the sofa, keep them dry and properly contained.

The safest washing temperature, cycle, detergent and drying method depend on the chosen fabric. Follow its current care label rather than accepting a universal claim that every upholstery fabric is treated identically.

What if the folding mechanism squeaks?

On Neptune and Orian, occasional hinge squeaking can be addressed by applying a silicone-based spray lubricant to the moving metal joints, as confirmed by Cozey's founder. Protect nearby upholstery and foam from overspray, use only a modest amount, and operate the mechanism as directed. Do not dismantle, modify or force the mechanism to stop a noise. If a joint seems loose, obstructed or damaged, contact Cozey rather than assuming lubrication is the solution.

Atmosphere Sleeper's opening system is designed to require no routine mechanism maintenance under normal use. Unusual resistance or damage should be assessed rather than ignored.

A squeak does not automatically imply structural failure, and lubricating it is not a substitute for investigating persistent grinding, jamming or visible deformation.

What to avoid when cleaning a sofa bed

  • Do not fold any Cozey sleeper with a mattress topper, sheets or loose bedding still spread over the sleeping surface.
  • Do not get cleaning products or spray lubricant onto the foam or into fabric seams without care instructions authorising that treatment.
  • Do not machine-wash the fixed upholstery on Neptune or Orian.
  • Do not trap fabric or bedding near moving hinges.
  • Do not attempt structural repairs or tighten mechanism components without Cozey guidance.
  • Do not assume that a “performance” label means stain-proof, scratch-proof or maintenance-free.

What about bedding stored for a long time?

Neptune's internal compartments and compatible Orian/Atmosphere storage modules can be used for bedding. Cozey has not identified a specific compartment-related ventilation concern, but it remains sensible to air out and wash sheets or blankets left unused for several weeks or months before making up the bed for guests.

If a bed has been stored in a damp environment or shows signs of moisture or odour, address the cause and clean/dry the contents before reuse.

A practical Australian-care consideration

In a humid or coastal home, the general bedding rule is especially useful: put away only clean, fully dry sheets and toppers, and air out bedding that has sat unused for weeks or months. This is ordinary bedding hygiene rather than evidence of a special ventilation defect in any Cozey storage module. Follow the exact local fabric-care label for washing instructions.

A simple ownership routine

A simple ownership routine

WhenWhat to do
After each guestStrip bedding, inspect for spills, clean eligible areas as needed
Before foldingRemove all bedding from the sleep surface; check for caught fabric
When a Neptune/Orian hinge starts squeakingConsider silicone spray at the moving metal joints
When a mechanism jams or looks damagedStop and contact Cozey rather than forcing it
Before using bedding stored for weeks/monthsAir it out and wash it
When replacing a coverConfirm collection, fabric, module and generation compatibility

The bottom line

The best care routine is specific to the sofa bed you own. Treat upholstery, stored bedding and moving metal parts as three different maintenance tasks—and follow product-specific instructions whenever a label or mechanism differs.
