Short answer: For a small space, look for a table that stays compact when closed, chairs with a narrow footprint and a low back, and an extension you only use when you host. Among our dining tables, the Vela and Ushi are compact: they measure 62.0 by 38.6 inches (157.6 by 98 cm) closed and extend to 77.8 inches (197.6 cm) when you need more room.

Small-space dining is a balance between table size, chair size and walking room. This guide uses our published measurements so you can plan with real numbers.

What makes a dining set compact?

  • A table that changes size. An extendable table lets you keep a small footprint every day and add length only for guests.
  • Chairs that are narrow or low. Width decides how many chairs fit along a side, and a lower back keeps the room feeling open.
  • Seating that fits the way you live. A bench or a mix of chairs can reduce the space each seat needs.
  • Clearance around the table. A common guideline is about 36 inches (91 cm) between the table edge and the nearest wall or furniture. This is general advice, not a product specification.

Compare the chairs

Chair width and height both matter in a small room. These are the overall dimensions of our dining chairs.

Compare the chairs

Vela20.9 in (53.1 cm)31.2 in (79.3 cm)19.0 in (48.2 cm)

The Ushi chair is a little narrower and lower than the Vela chair, so it takes slightly less room in a small space.

Using a bench to save space

The Vela dining bench measures 59.1 inches (150 cm) long, 15.0 inches (38 cm) deep and 17.2 inches (43.8 cm) high without the cushion, or 18.6 inches (47.2 cm) high with it. A bench can seat several people along one side of the table without the extra elbow room that separate chairs usually need. Check the bench against your table length on the product page before you order.

See our guide to choosing between a dining bench and chairs for more detail.

Placing a small dining set

  • Against a wall: push a closed table against a wall in a nook and pull it out when you host.
  • Check doors and walkways: measure the extended table, not only the closed one, against doorways and furniture.
  • Plan for storage: the extension is a separate leaf, so store it when you do not need it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our Vela and Ushi tables are compact at 62.0 by 38.6 inches (157.6 by 98 cm) closed, and they extend to 77.8 inches (197.6 cm) when you need more room. They suit small to medium dining rooms and open-plan spaces, and you can keep the extension leaf stored for everyday use. Measure the extended length against doorways and other furniture before you choose, and leave about 36 inches (91 cm) around the table, which is general advice rather than a product specification.

The Ushi chair is the narrower of our two dining chairs, at 20.6 inches (52.4 cm) wide, compared with 20.9 inches (53.1 cm) for the Vela. It is also a little lower, at 30.4 inches (77.3 cm) overall against 31.2 inches (79.3 cm) for the Vela, with a seat height of 18.5 inches (47 cm) against 19.0 inches (48.2 cm). The difference is small, so choose by style and comfort, and check the product page for the chair you want.

The Ushi chair is the lower of our two dining chairs, at 30.4 inches (77.3 cm) overall height, compared with 31.2 inches (79.3 cm) for the Vela. A lower back keeps a room feeling open and the sight lines clear, which matters in a small kitchen or an open-plan living area. Its seat height is 18.5 inches (47 cm), slightly lower than the Vela at 19.0 inches (48.2 cm). Check the product page for the chair you choose, since specifications can change.

A common guideline is about 36 inches (91 cm) between the table edge and the nearest wall or furniture. That leaves room to pull out a chair and walk behind a seated guest. It is general advice, not a product specification, so allow more if the table sits in a busy walkway. In a small room the closed table is your everyday footprint, and you can push it against a wall in a nook and pull it out when you host. Measure the extended table, not only the closed one, against doorways and other furniture.

Our extendable tables use a separate extension leaf, which suits a small space because you keep a compact table every day and add length only for guests. The Vela and Ushi extend to 77.8 inches (197.6 cm). Because the leaf is separate, you can store it when you do not need it, and it adds about 15.7 inches (40 cm) of length, so a small room can use the table closed every day and extended only for guests. Check the product page for the table you choose to see what is included with each configuration.

It can save space along one side of the table, because people can sit closer together than separate chairs allow. The Vela bench is 59.1 inches (150 cm) long, 15.0 inches (38 cm) deep and 17.2 inches (43.8 cm) high without the cushion, or 18.6 inches (47.2 cm) high with it. A bench has no backrest, so it suits shorter meals and casual dining better than long dinners. Check the bench length against your table length on the product page before you order.
