Buying a rug online can be a lovely way to find something that brings your room together. You can explore designs, see how they look in different interiors, and compare sizes without leaving home. But when you're ordering a washable rug in Australia, there are a few practical details that deserve attention before you check out.

You'll want to understand the dimensions in centimetres, how the colour might look in your lighting, whether the pad is included, and what delivery and returns involve. We believe shopping for home furnishings should be simple. Here's what we'd check before choosing a rug online.

Start with the room you're furnishing

Before looking at patterns, measure the area where the rug will go. In a lounge room, the rug often works best when it connects the sofa, coffee table, and nearby seating. In a bedroom, think about how much rug you want visible around the bed. For a dining room, allow enough space for chairs to move back from the table without catching on the rug's edge.

If the space is open-plan, the rug can also help define the lounge area. This can be particularly useful in an apartment or townhouse where the living and dining areas share one continuous floor. We recommend using painter's tape to outline your preferred size. Then check the room from different angles and make sure there are comfortable walking paths.

It's a simple way to avoid ordering a rug that turns out to be smaller or larger than you imagined.

Understand the dimensions in metric

One detail worth knowing when shopping with Cozey is that our rug sizes are displayed in feet. For Australian homes, it's often easier to think in centimetres. Here's a guide to our available sizes:

Understand the dimensions in metric

Cozey sizeApproximate dimensions
2.5' × 8' runner76 × 244 cm
3' × 5'91 × 152 cm
5' × 8'152 × 244 cm
8' × 10'244 × 305 cm
9' × 12'274 × 366 cm

These conversions help you compare the rug dimensions with your floor plan and furniture measurements. For example, a 244 × 305 cm rug creates a generous foundation beneath a lounge arrangement. A 152 × 244 cm rug may be more suitable for a compact living room, study, or bedroom. The important thing is to choose a size that fits your furniture and the way you use the space.

Don't rely solely on how large the rug looks in the product photography.

Why colours can look different online

Colour is one of the most important parts of choosing a rug—and one of the hardest to judge on a screen. Your phone may display colours differently from your laptop. The rug can also appear warmer or cooler depending on the lighting in your home. A pattern photographed in a bright studio might feel quite different in a lounge room with afternoon sunlight or warm evening lamps.

At Cozey, we've included lighting visualizations on our rug product pages to help you understand how colours may appear in different conditions. We recommend reviewing these before ordering, especially if you're coordinating the rug with an existing sofa or timber floor. We don't currently offer physical rug swatches. And while our visualizations are useful, they can't perfectly reproduce every home's lighting.

We'd suggest looking at the overall colour family and pattern rather than trying to match an exact shade on your screen. If your room receives strong direct sunlight, also remember that prolonged exposure can gradually fade fabric colours over time.

Check the fabric and what's underneath it

A rug's construction influences how it will feel in your home. Our Cozey washable rugs have a soft polyester chenille surface with digitally printed patterns. The printing creates detailed visual texture, while the physical fabric texture remains consistent across the collection. The rug layer is approximately 8.5 mm thick.

Underneath is an included 4.5 mm cushioned modular pad with an EVA core and TPR grip surfaces. The two pieces create approximately 13 mm of combined thickness. We like this construction because it brings together soft comfort and a practical, relatively low-profile surface. The pad is included with every rug.

Its interlocking pieces fit together without tools, and the rug layer rests on top without adhesive or Velcro. The pad also sits slightly inside the rug's edges, keeping it hidden from view. Knowing this construction in advance helps you understand what you're purchasing rather than guessing from an image.

Will it fit in your washing machine?

It's an important question, especially if you're choosing one of our larger rugs. The removable rug layer is machine-washable, while the cushioned pad is spot-clean only. Our smaller sizes can be washed in standard home machines. The 8' × 10' requires a washer with a drum capacity of at least 4.5 cubic feet, approximately 127 litres, and no central agitator.

Our 9' × 12' needs a commercial machine with a 60–80 lb load capacity. Because Australian washing machines are usually described in kilograms, it's important not to assume that a kilogram rating is equivalent to a particular drum volume. If you're unsure, check your appliance's specifications or confirm the requirements with the laundry service you intend to use.

We recommend washing the removable layer on a gentle cycle with cold water and mild, bleach-free detergent. It can be tumble-dried on low heat or air-dried. Following the care instructions helps maintain the rug's fit and appearance.

What should you know about delivery in Australia?

Cozey offers standard free shipping to most Australian states and territories. Remote areas may have exceptions or additional delivery charges. The estimated delivery date depends on your location and product availability, so we'd recommend checking the details shown on the Australian product page and at checkout.

Our washable rugs are delivered folded in one box, along with all the pieces needed to assemble the cushioned modular pad. If you live in an apartment building, check where the courier is expected to leave the package and whether you'll need to bring it up to your unit. For standard delivery, you shouldn't assume the package will be carried inside your home.

Because the pad is modular, it doesn't arrive as one large, rigid backing. That makes it easier to manage, assemble, and later pack away if you move.

What should you expect when unpacking?

Once your rug arrives, assemble the interlocking pad pieces on the floor. The pieces connect like a puzzle and don't require tools. Then lay the washable chenille rug layer on top. The TPR grip material helps keep the fabric and pad in position without mechanical attachments.

You may notice some fold creases at first. That's normal, as the rug has been packed for shipping. They generally settle over a few days, although some can take one to two weeks. If needed, you can gently use a clothes steamer to help relax the fabric while it's on its pad.

We recommend avoiding excessive concentrated heat. Give the rug a little time to settle before deciding how it looks in the room.

Understanding prices, GST, and payment

When shopping on the Australian Cozey website, rug prices are displayed in AUD. Australian consumer price displays must include applicable GST and other unavoidable charges in the total advertised price. Any additional delivery charges for your address should be clear before you complete the order. We recommend reviewing your full checkout summary, especially if you live in a regional or remote area.

The current product page will show the price for the size and design you've selected. Every Cozey washable rug includes its cushioned modular pad, so there's no need to add a separate underlay to complete the system. That's part of how we keep the buying experience straightforward.

What if the rug isn't right for your space?

Sometimes, a rug looks different once it's surrounded by your furniture. The pattern might feel bolder than expected, or you may decide another size would have worked better. Cozey offers a 30-day return period, subject to the applicable return conditions. We recommend keeping the original packaging until you're confident the rug is right for your home.

Free returns generally require the product to be returned within the eligible period and in its original packaging. Missing packaging or significant damage can affect eligibility or result in additional charges.

You can review the current details on our Australian returns page.

Cozey also provides a five-year limited warranty for eligible manufacturing defects. These company policies operate alongside your applicable consumer rights under Australian Consumer Law. We think it's worth understanding both the purchase conditions and the available protections before ordering any significant home furnishing.

How to make a confident final decision

A good online shopping experience should leave you feeling informed, not uncertain. Before ordering, check the dimensions in centimetres, review the lighting previews, understand the rug's construction, and make sure your washing machine can accommodate the size. Read the delivery and return information for your location. Then choose the design that feels right for your space.

Every Cozey washable rug features an original pattern created exclusively by our in-house design team and includes its own cushioned, non-slip pad. We want the whole experience—from choosing your rug to living with it—to feel as simple as possible.
