The best bed frame for a household with pets and children is one that you can keep clean, maintain easily and use safely. That matters more than a promise that a particular fabric or finish is completely pet-proof.
Dogs shed hair.
Cats may scratch upholstered furniture.
Children can leave marks on bed frames, spill drinks or bump toys against the furniture.
These situations are part of everyday life, but they're worth thinking about before purchasing a bed.
At Cozey, we developed the Ara Upholstered Bed with removable, machine-washable covers because we wanted upholstered bedroom furniture to be easier to maintain.
We also wanted customers to have the option to replace compatible covers or components rather than automatically replacing the entire bed.
Those choices were inspired by some of the practical advantages of our modular sofas.
However, we don't believe any fabric is immune to claws, every stain or all types of wear.
And while a padded bed can feel softer, upholstery doesn't make furniture child-proof.
Here's what we recommend considering before choosing a bed for a busy household.

1. What Makes a Bed Frame Practical for Pets and Children?
We would evaluate five characteristics.
Cleaning
Can the surfaces be cleaned using practical household methods?
For upholstery, removable washable covers are a particularly useful feature.
Surface Durability
Will the material suit the way your pets and children interact with furniture?
Different fabrics and finishes respond differently to scratching and abrasion.
Structural Support
Is the mattress supported by a properly designed structure?
A bed's exterior fabric doesn't tell you everything about its underlying foundation.
Replaceable Parts
Can a worn or damaged cover be replaced without replacing the entire bed?
Everyday Safety
Can the furniture be assembled and used correctly, including any drawers or moving components?
These are more meaningful criteria than relying entirely on a generic “family-friendly” description.
2. Upholstered vs. Timber Beds: Which Is Better?
Both can be suitable for families and pet owners.
Upholstered and timber beds compared for pets and kids
| Factor | Upholstered bed | Timber bed |
|---|---|---|
| Pet hair | May collect hair depending on texture | Often easier to wipe clean |
| Spills and marks | May need textile cleaning or removable-cover washing | Depends on the surface finish |
| Cat claws | Can snag threads | Can scratch the finish |
| Headboard feel | Often padded and softer | Usually firmer |
| Deep cleaning | Machine washing if covers are designed for it | Appropriate surface cleaning |
| Refreshing appearance | Compatible covers may be replaceable | May require panel repair or replacement |
The right choice depends on your preferences.
If you love upholstery and value washable covers, an upholstered bed can be a practical option.
If you'd rather avoid fabric-covered furniture, a timber bed may suit you better.
However, timber isn't automatically scratch-proof.
And not all upholstered beds have removable covers.
We recommend checking the specific product rather than choosing based on material alone.
3. Why Are Removable, Washable Bed Covers Useful?
For Ara, removable upholstery was part of our original product-development approach.
We wanted to bring a familiar Cozey sofa feature into the bedroom.
The supported upholstered frame and headboard covers are removable and machine-washable according to their care instructions.
What Does That Mean for Dog Owners?
If a dog regularly brushes against the foot of the bed, hair and dirt may accumulate on the fabric.
Routine vacuuming can help.
For deeper cleaning, eligible covers can be removed and washed using the approved method.
This provides more flexibility than permanently attached upholstery.
What Does It Mean for Parents?
Children sometimes leave marks on furniture.
A removable cover can make cleaning more manageable because the fabric can be maintained separately from the frame.
However, washability doesn't guarantee removal of every stain.
Nor does it mean the fabric can be washed in any way.
Customers should follow the selected material's specific instructions.
What Can't Be Washed?
The underlying steel frame, foam, timber panels and hardware aren't machine-washable.
Only the removable fabric covers identified as washable should be laundered.
4. What's the Best Bed Fabric for Dogs?
There isn't one universally best fabric.
Different dogs create different maintenance challenges.
If Your Dog Sheds a Lot
Pet hair can accumulate on textured upholstery.
A smoother fabric may be easier to vacuum or brush, depending on the weave.
Removable covers can help with periodic deeper cleaning.
However, no fabric eliminates the need to remove shed hair.
If Your Dog Has Long Claws
Claws can catch threads or damage some surface textures.
Consider how tightly woven or looped the fabric is.
An abrasion-resistant fabric isn't necessarily claw-proof.
If Your Dog Brings Dirt Into the Bedroom
Select a fabric with cleaning instructions you can realistically follow.
Address marks promptly using methods suitable for the material.
If deeper cleaning is required, follow the care label when washing an eligible cover.
Our Recommendation
Choose the texture and maintenance experience that suit your dog.
For customers who prefer upholstered furniture, Ara's removable covers are a useful advantage.
For those who prefer hard surfaces, an appropriate timber bed may be more convenient.
5. What's the Best Bed Fabric for Cats?
Cats create a different kind of wear because scratching is a natural behaviour.
Some fabrics may be more susceptible to pulled threads when claws catch the surface.
Is Bouclé a Good Choice for Cats?
Bouclé creates a textured, sculptural appearance.
However, pronounced loops can be a consideration for cats that frequently scratch furniture.
We wouldn't describe it as automatically the best pet fabric.
What About Chenille or Performance Fabrics?
Their properties depend on the actual weave and construction.
Performance fabric can describe particular cleaning or abrasion characteristics, but that doesn't necessarily indicate resistance to cat claws.
We recommend reviewing fabric swatches and the material's care information.
What Else Can Help?
Providing suitable scratching posts may help redirect scratching away from furniture.
If your cat already scratches upholstery frequently, it's sensible to choose the bed material with that behaviour in mind.
A timber frame avoids textile snags but may still develop visible claw marks.
6. Why Is Replaceable Upholstery Important?
We believe customers should have options when their furniture experiences wear.
With Ara Upholstered, compatible fabric covers can be purchased separately for the frame and headboard.
This means a customer can replace worn or damaged upholstery without necessarily replacing the underlying steel structural foundation.
What About Changing Colour?
Replacement covers also allow customers to refresh the bedroom aesthetic with another available colour or fabric.
For example, someone might initially choose a pale neutral upholstery and later prefer a richer shade.
The correct cover set must match the bed size and compatible design.
Can Other Parts Be Changed?
Yes.
Within supported configurations, customers can change their headboard by purchasing a compatible new headboard and covers.
They can also convert between storage and non-storage using the appropriate exterior frame components and drawers while retaining the main structural foundation.
Availability and compatibility should always be confirmed with Cozey Customer Happiness.
7. Which Ara Headboard Works Best for Families?
Ara Upholstered offers Round, Square, Pillow and Extended headboards.
Each was developed for a different preference.
Round
Round has a modern, curved silhouette.
It's our most popular headboard and works with many bedroom styles.
Square
Square offers a more classic, structured design.
Its installed depth is the same as Round.
Pillow
Pillow was designed to create a plush appearance and additional back comfort when sitting upright.
It can be appealing to families who read in bed or enjoy relaxing against the headboard.
The trade-off is additional depth.
A Queen or Australian King Pillow configuration is approximately 235 cm deep overall, compared with 223.5 cm for Round or Square.
Extended
Extended is designed for a more luxurious, hotel-inspired bedroom.
It requires substantially more wall width and is generally more suited to spacious bedrooms.
Does a Padded Headboard Make the Bed Safer for Children?
No.
A padded surface may feel softer, but it's not a child-safety device and doesn't remove the risk of injury.
Children should use furniture appropriately and be supervised according to their age and abilities.
8. Are Storage Beds Practical for Families With Children?
They can be very convenient.
Ara's four side-access drawers can store spare bedding, clothing and other suitable belongings.
For a family with limited wardrobe space, that may reduce bedroom clutter.
However, drawers aren't designed as play equipment.
Important Drawer Precautions
Each Ara drawer has a maximum load of 9 kg for stored belongings.
That doesn't mean a child can safely sit, stand or climb in it.
Keep drawers closed when not in use.
Don't allow children to use open drawers as steps.
Supervise younger children around moving parts.
What About Other Furniture in the Bedroom?
In Australia, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission provides safety guidance concerning furniture toppling hazards.
Dressers, bookshelves and other furniture should be installed and secured according to their instructions and applicable safety recommendations.
Children may attempt to climb drawers to reach objects above them, so the entire bedroom layout matters.
A storage bed isn't a substitute for appropriately securing other furniture.
9. How Should You Clean Upholstery Around Pets and Children?
The correct method depends on the fabric.
Address Marks Promptly
Where appropriate, remove surface debris and address spills before they become more difficult to clean.
Avoid aggressive rubbing if the fabric-care instructions recommend blotting.
Follow the Fabric Label
For washable Ara covers, use the approved washing and drying instructions.
Don't assume all fabrics tolerate the same water temperature, cleaning chemicals or drying conditions.
Keep Cleaning Products Away From Pets and Children
Store detergents and cleaning products safely.
Follow product labels, including ventilation and re-entry instructions.
Keep animals and young children away from treated areas when the cleaning product requires it.
If an animal may have ingested a harmful cleaning substance, seek veterinary advice promptly.
Don't Use Harsh Products Without Checking
A product designed to remove stains isn't automatically suitable for every upholstery.
Always check material compatibility before applying it.
10. How Long Should a Family Bed Frame Last?
There isn't one universal lifespan for every bed.
The structure, materials, assembly, maintenance and use all matter.
A fabric cover may show wear while the supporting frame remains sound.
A timber finish can scratch without necessarily affecting the bed's structural stability.
Ara's Structure
Ara uses a four-quadrant, powder-coated steel structural frame, supporting legs and laminated veneer lumber slats.
Its published maximum total loads, including the mattress and occupants, are:
Ara maximum total load by bed size
| Size | Maximum total load |
|---|---|
| Full | 272 kg |
| Queen | 363 kg |
| Australian King | 408 kg |
These figures describe the structural load limits.
They don't mean the fabric is resistant to every kind of scratching or damage.
Can You Replace Individual Components?
Yes.
Individual replacement parts can be supplied through Cozey Customer Happiness, subject to the correct version and availability.
This can help customers address certain types of damage without automatically replacing the whole bed.
What About Warranty Coverage?
Cozey provides a five-year limited manufacturing warranty according to its terms.
Customers also retain applicable consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law.
Ordinary wear and accidental pet damage shouldn't automatically be treated as manufacturing defects.
Check the relevant warranty and any additional protection arrangements.
11. Which Bed Frame Would We Recommend?
What we'd recommend considering by household priority
| Household priority | What we'd recommend considering |
|---|---|
| Dog sheds heavily | Upholstery that's easy to vacuum or a suitable hard finish |
| Dog sometimes leaves marks | Removable, washable covers |
| Cat scratches upholstered furniture | Less looped fabrics or timber, while recognising neither is scratch-proof |
| Young children sometimes spill | Fabrics with removable covers and clear care instructions |
| Family reads in bed | Pillow headboard for added back comfort |
| Compact bedroom | Round or Square headboard |
| Need storage for spare bedding | Four-drawer storage configuration |
| Want to change upholstery later | Compatible replacement covers |
| Want a bed for long-term ownership | Supportive structure, appropriate maintenance and replacement parts |
Final Thoughts: Design for the Way Your Household Lives
When we developed Ara, we wanted to create a bed that was beautiful, customisable and practical to own.
Removable, machine-washable upholstery was an important part of that goal.
We wanted customers to enjoy a fabric-covered bed without treating the entire piece of furniture as one permanently upholstered object.
We also wanted customers to be able to replace compatible covers and other components over time.
Those choices can be especially useful for homes with pets and children.
But we don't believe there is a single perfect bed material for every family.
Cats can scratch fabrics.
Dogs can leave hair and marks.
Children can create everyday wear.
The best choice is one that takes those realities into account.
A genuinely family-friendly bed is one you can clean, maintain and use appropriately—while still creating a bedroom you love.
